As of October 31, 2020, I've become a certified helicopter flight instructor! I train and fly out of Atomic Helicopters, located at Boeing Field/King County International Airport (KBFI) just south of downtown Seattle, Washington, USA. Most of my early time was in the Schweizer 300C, which is such an amazing little helicopter to fly. These days however, I’m almost exclusively working in a Robinson R44 Raven II.
I'm happy to be able to share my love of aviation with you. Thanks for tagging along!

Full Flight: Lunch run to Harvey Field (S43) in a Robinson R44
It was the day before Thanksgiving 2021, and my son had the day off from school. Rather than have him sit around at home all day watching us work, I decided to take the day off and do something fun with him instead.
The original plan was to head out to Jefferson County Airport for lunch and some of their famous pie, but the weather near the strait wasn't cooperating. Given that, we took the short hop over to Harvey Field (S43) in Snohomish, Washington. The food is great, the company is better, and we were able to get Derek back in the helicopter for the first time in weeks. Good stuff all around!
This video is a full-length, uncut view of the roughly 30 minute flight from Boeing Field to Harvey Field. It's mostly father/son bonding over the shared love of aviation, but there are some CFI-type lessons scattered around as well.
As always, we hope you enjoy the ride!

Gift of Flight: Flying to Give a Surprise Helicopter Flight Lesson
Переглядів 8273 роки тому
Join me as I fly from Boeing Field (BFI) in Seattle to Whidbey Airpark (W10) to give a surprise flight lesson to a lucky new student. His partner set this up weeks earlier, under the premise of a wine tasting expedition. Apparently he hates wine but loves helicopters, so way to play with the guy's emotions! The video begins just north of Seattle, near Lake Union. I proceed over Green Lake, Shor...
Flight Lesson #1: Straight-and-Level, Cyclic, and Collective
Переглядів 2,1 тис.4 роки тому
As you may know, my “day” job has me working as a software engineering manager at a local Seattle-area tech startup. Aviation is my passion though, and I’ve garnered a decent following at the office as I’ve made my way through the training process. Now that I’ve become a certified flight instructor, a few folks from work have expressed interest in working toward their own ratings with me. Joel’...
Helicopter Instructor Prep: Flying Back to Boeing Field
Переглядів 4674 роки тому
This is the final portion of my September 27th, 2020 instructor prep flight. In this segment, I transition through the Auburn Municipal Airport (S50) area back to Boeing Field (KBFI). I cover flying in the vicinity of an airport, Class D airspace operations, and the Oakdale Arrival back to Boeing. It'd been almost a month since my most recent actual training session (smoke from wildfires follow...

This is an uncut portion of the flight from Boeing Field (KBFI) to Auburn (S50) as I practice my flying, talking, and teaching in preparation for my flight instructor checkride. It'd been almost a month since my most recent actual training session (smoke from wildfires followed by PNW IMC) so this was part of my "dusting off the cobwebs" flight. You can check out some other segments from this f...
Helicopter Instructor Prep: Shallow Approach, Hovering
Переглядів 8274 роки тому
After a sloppy attempt at a shallow approach (I let distractions divide my attention a bit too much), I moved over to the taxiway and parking area to do some hover practice. It'd been almost a month since my most recent actual training session (smoke from wildfires followed by PNW IMC) so this was part of my "dusting off the cobwebs" flight. You can check out some other segments from this fligh...
Helicopter Instructor Prep: Steep Approaches
Переглядів 4,5 тис.4 роки тому
I went out and flew a couple of steep approaches into a confined area practice spot located just southeast of Auburn Municipal Airport (S50) in Washington state. I'm working on my "teaching while flying" technique here, and am happy to have you along. It'd been almost a month since my most recent training session (smoke from wildfires followed by PNW IMC) so this was part of my "dusting off the...
Helicopter Lesson: The Four Aerodynamic Forces
Переглядів 2,9 тис.4 роки тому
Today's topic is the four aerodynamic forces that act on a helicopter in flight. They are divided into two pairs of opposing forces, generally vertical and horizontal: - Lift (up), opposed by Weight (down) - Thrust (forward) opposed by Drag (rearward) In unaccelerated flight - for example, when straight-and-level, or in a constant airspeed climb or descent - lift is equal to weight, and thrust ...
Helicopter Lesson: Ground Effect
Переглядів 15 тис.4 роки тому
In this lesson, we expand upon our previous discussion about induced flow and its effect on angle of attack to explain ground effect. Ground effect is the increased rotor efficiency and lift performance that we feel when within roughly one rotor diameter of the ground. The maximum possible ground effect in a given situation will be reduced by a variety of factors such as: - Distance from the gr...
Helicopter Lesson: Airflow and Lift
Переглядів 3,5 тис.4 роки тому
In this basic lesson, I talk about the types of airflow experienced by a helicopter's rotor system and how they combine to generate lift. I had trouble understanding this beyond a superficial level at first, but it’s pretty straight-forward once you draw it all out. The topics introduced here are: - Relative wind - Rotational relative wind - Induced flow - Resultant relative wind - Angle of att...
Instruction Intro: For the Love of Aviation
Переглядів 1864 роки тому
In this short video, I talk about what I've been up to for the last year or so as Covid impacted my flight instructor training. Part of my plan has always been to leverage UA-cam as a means to both refine my instructional technique and to share my love of aviation with others. I've put together a basic private pilot ground school road map, and I will be implementing that road map through a seri...
Flight over Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the Rain
Переглядів 3254 роки тому
It's Saturday August 29, 2020. Here in the Pacific Northwest, that means we're running short on reliable weekend VFR weather, so we need to get these flights in while we can. Derek starts school on Monday, and we go back to work as well all virtually, of course. A bucket list item of ours has been to overfly the Tacoma Narrows bridge, so that's what we're going to do today. While we're in the g...

Discovering Spada Lake in a Helicopter
Переглядів 5774 роки тому
It's August 16, 2020. A week ago, Derek and I took a flight out to Ranger Creek on the northeast slope of Mt. Rainier. It was an amazing adventure, and Derek couldn't stop talking about it. Unfortunately, that left Crystal feeling a bit left out. She wanted in on the action. I don't need any excuse to go out and fly, so the problem at this point was figuring out what to do. We wanted to fly int...

I visited here yesterday and also to the person that lives in sultan I do too
🌳🚁🌳
Nice flying.
Why on earth do you want to be a helicopter CFI ?
lovely flying mate
Pure physics. Thank you for tutorials
I’m 25 , born and raised in Tacoma WA. Dope ass fucking video!
Thank you Sir, You explained it in better way.
I love it,
This guy's marker skills, are absolutely on another level.
😂
Perfect about of squeek too
I live in sultan and this lake never gets old to visit. You can drive up to it, but it's totally different from the air.
I'm following the Mountain Rescue associations course on basic Helicopter Safety and functions. I used your video for a reference! From a sar volunteer, Thank you. Keep it up you are a great instructor.
Thank you so much for the support, and for volunteering your time with SAR!
HERE WE GOOOOOOOOO....Thanks
Hey cool heli guy, love seeing my old neighborhood out of you your heli. really cool! Do you think it would be possible to change the angle of the camera to see more of the surroundings? Possibly a second camera that captures even more of the great landscape and your heli while flying? Just a wish from a fan from you in Germany. keep on flying
Thanks for watching! I definitely have some better angles in mind for future videos, including a skid mounted 360 cam that I’m excited to try out. I’ve been so busy lately and haven’t really had the energy to set up (and down) the camera gear and edit video. But I’ve been thinking about it a lot, and am hoping to get that all going again soon. Thank you again!
Love it!! 👍🏼
I’m working on learning the physics of helicopters for an application and this has been the best explanation of resultant relative wind out of all the videos I could find! Thank you
Thank you so much for the support!
🔥🔥🔥
thank you for this
good job. Those pies must be worth it
You jumped out of that 300 rather quickly 😂
This is cool thanks alot 😍😍😍🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️
Any time! 😃
what kind of cameras do you use to record the videos? Like that one on the control panel.
Hello! The camera on the dash is a GoPro Max 360 camera. The other camera is a GoPro Hero 7 Black.
I wish you record vedio to the instrument and flight controls
Perfecto👍
That’s awesome
BTW, Boeing is putting that real estate on the market.
Just discovered your Channel. I'm playing dcs(digital combat simulator) for a while now and im trying to become a heli pilot irl. Ingame I got into helis a few weeks ago. Had a lot of struggle getting a hand of landings. Wanted to know what might be the effects that i have to keep in mind to finaly get them done right. Found your channel, great work with your vids man. Simple explanations of hard to understand topics. Really helped me. Keep up the good work! sorry for my english im german :S
Awesome! Send me an email at leile@leileflying.com, and I’ll be happy to continue the conversation. Your English is great, by the way!
Awesome route in. Nice to get a preview of the ATC calls for when I try this later this month. I'll be asking for a transition to S50 after a waterfront pass.
Thanks a lot! You helped me with my project 👍👍
Coming from a governed machine, it's constant alarm bells going every time I hear that RPM change-- I can't help it :D
I am pretty positive that weight is not an aerodynamik force...
Correct. Weight is a function of gravity and is just easier to talk about. Since the weight we feel also changes during maneuvers (based on load factor), it’s a nice way to help us visualize and describe various concepts.
@@LeileFlying okay, hard for me to wrap my head around but as i am the only one "complaining", I seem to be the only one minding it so... carry on :D Also I wanna say sorry for my negative comment, I should have told you that i really liked the video other than the weight thing! have a nice one!
No worries at all! I know it can be tricky stuff to wrap your head around, and Ive been there for sure. Are you in training now? Feel free to shoot me a mail at leile@leileflying.com. I’d be happy to answer questions, or even set up a one-on-one Zoom call to help with any areas you’re having trouble with. Happy flying!
@@LeileFlying Well yea i recently started my CPL-H integrated in Europe. Thanks for the offer, i will gladly take you up on it if i feel the need to! Right now i feel relatively confident. With "hard to wrap my head around" i meant the concept of looking at gravitiy as a aeordynamic force. The thing is that aerodynamic forces depend on the movement and axial alignement of the aircraft while gravitiy is always a downward force , absolutely independent of the aircrafts movement and alignement. Have a good one! Mike
Where are you going to be teaching? I fly out of Paine Field and have about 320 hours. I'm interested in a rotory-wing add-on rating, will you be teaching locally?
I’m instructing part time out of Boeing Field at Atomic Helicopters. Shoot me a mail at leile@leileflying.com if you’d like to coordinate an intro flight. I started fixed wing as well, but fell in love with helicopters from my very first lesson.
@@LeileFlying Excellent. Message sent.
LOL, this "Aviation Nerd" loves living near an airport. I can often be found in the Wendy's parking lot taking pictures. Nice video!
I love it! I always wave at the photogs I see in parking lots near airports. 😀 Find my email at leileflying.com, and hit me up if you’d like to get some shots from the passenger seat sometime. 🚁😎
Excellent film footage, commentary, scenery and sound.
Excellent scenery.
Excellent film footage, commentary and sound.
The Schweizer is a great machine. I knew some guys who hook a skid and suffered dynamic rollover in a C model. Totaled machine; got out and walked away unscathed.
I agree! The 300 is easy to fly, tough as an ox, incredibly capable, and is a reliable and safe ship. I’m hopeful that they’ll restart the build pipeline soon! 🤞
Nice Video, even I understood what you were getting across to your student. Clear and simple.😊👍
.
More of a hover than a "landing".
Hello Liked watching your flights watched 2 would like to know a little more about flying can you send me a message Thanks solar_pilot
I’m glad you enjoyed the videos! You can head to my web site at leileflying.com, where you can find my email and Instagram links. Either of those can be used to message me. I’d be happy to have a chat!
To the instructor: Very nice video. You are very calm and reassuring. I'm sure it can be nerve-wracking at times letting go of the controls but your confidence is passed to the student. Nice to watch this! Happy 2021!
Thank you so much! It’s not as nerve wracking as you might think to hand over the controls - you’ve just got to be gradual with how much of the controls you give over at a time. And of course, always be ready to recover in the inevitable event where the student loses concentration. 😂 Happy 2021 to you as well, and thanks for commenting!
This will help my xplane flying
Oops that should HIGE.
This is a great short vid for helping one understand the transition from ETL flight regime to HOGE, while being able to clearly read the gauges and see the interactions. The pilot carefully stays just inside ETL until he clears the first barrier and immediately coverts speed into lift to ease down to Ground Effect and pulls power again. Then technique to aggressively push cyclic forward to restore ETL in time to clear far barrier. The cyclic moves are clear and the the clear guages help you see the Power vs. Speed trade offs, and analyze it. Would like to see more of the tricky maneuvers done just like this with an inset view also showing collective. Though MP does give some indication. Thanks.
