PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, have been found in the drinking water supply in multiple locations around Wisconsin. Known as “forever chemicals” because of their remarkable persistence and mobility, they do not break down in the environment and they can harm the health of people and wildlife. PFAS is used in a range of products, including fire-fighting foam, stain-protection treatments for paper and textiles, and non-stick coatings like Teflon. Nearly all U.S. residents have PFAS in their bodies.
A growing body of scientific research has found links between PFAS exposure and a wide range of health problems including a weaker immune system, cancer, increased cholesterol levels, pregnancy-induced hypertension, liver damage, reduced fertility, and increased risk of thyroid disease. In this Adult Forum, Dr. Neary (University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health) will help us understand the risks of PFAS, and current proposals to help address this environmental threat.
