But tap water has been fine for my Pothos, succulents, Red Anthuriums, cacti etc !! I know little about orchids. One of my kids gave me an orchid for Mother’s Day two years ago. I have many house plants but had never had an orchid and never planned on having one. I assumed that they needed some kind of hot house in order to live. Anyway, I knew enough about buying plants not to follow the instructions that come with a plant that comes from a big box store. However, I really assumed that the plant would die sometime after it was done blooming. When it did not die I decided that I should look into what to do with it. It was a gift from my son so I wanted it to live and I hate to see anything die anyway. So I bought a good brand of premixed orchid media to repot with and tried to water and fertilize the best that I knew how. That Phalaenopsis has followed its own regiment of growing new leaves and then putting out bloom stalks. I have never done anything to make it bloom. No temperature changes at all. I just follow my routine of watering and fertilizing regularly. I decided that if I could get my gift orchid to re bloom that I would buy another orchid since I am always up for a challenge. Last summer I purchased another full size Phal and two minis. Both of my full size Phalaenopsis are in bloom right now but the minis show no sign of a single spike. 😔 They have grown leaves and roots nicely but no spikes. Am I going to have to start doing some orchid tricks to get them to bloom?? Do minis require some additional care? I have been caring for the minis just like the full size Phals. Of course they get watered at different times due to the size difference but other than that all care is the same. They are in four inch pots. I did not want to over pot them. Do you think that they need a cooling period and more light? I don’t know how I would do a temperature drop for them since we have central heating. I guess that I could put them outside during the fall for a few hours but not at night time. We live in a forest and have forest critters that investigate everything at night time. My orchids might become food for the deer or some other creature. I use the MSU orchid fertilizer regularly. The large Phals seem to be perfectly content. I have only given them 12 hours of grow lights. Because we live in a forest the leaves on the trees block some of the sunlight during the summer so grow lights are a necessity. They have a southern exposure by the windows. Only recently have I heard that orchids like 16 hours of light. That was news to me. The large Phals have not been affected by the lack of four additional hours of light but maybe the minis are more demanding? Any ideas?

    • @therightpaph
      @therightpaph 5 місяців тому

      Hi and thank you for watching! I would suggest exactly what you had in mind. 1. Playing with the temps - i live in the desert and also use central air often but my plants are in a window that experience a drop in temp at night seasonally that the other parts of my home don’t. 2) as you mentioned with regard to a “natural” regiment, a window can provide adequate durations of light required for blooming - I find that southern windows are best as I currently utilize one. I use grow lights for fall and winter but I do not need them toward the end of spring through summer… fortunately summer practically starts in April here! Hope this helps!

    Isn’t putting that orchid into a terracotta pot kind of working against your aim of having more hydration? Clay pots absorb the moisture fairly quickly. That is why so many succulent growers use them.

    • @therightpaph
      @therightpaph 5 місяців тому

      Hi! Yes I do water the clay pots daily but I purposely do this to be obnoxious about having something to do. In the summer, they sit in plastic bowls of water so the pot consistently absorbs moisture, I enjoy this set up and there are only 3 plants in my entire collection in clay pots

  • @ellietobe

    As with many people my first orchard was a Phal. I never intended to have an orchid. I thought that you needed something like a hothouse to grow orchids. My first orchid was a gift from one of my children that knows that I love plants and flowers but also had no knowledge about orchids. After researching and finding out how to keep my gift alive I bought three more Phals. Like most people I was not aware that there were other types of orchids available for sale. Those other orchids are not sold in our area and most people don’t think to look online for orchids until after reading up on them or watching UA-cam videos. After seeing many other types of orchids I have not decided what other type of buy. Some of them do not have nice foliage. My Phals at least look good even without flowers. Some of the other types of orchids I have seen just have some very unattractive foliage. Since for much of the year these plants are not flowering I would like to have orchids that look nice without flowers. Some of those other types of orchids I do not even like the type of flower that they produce. Personal preference I guess. Those who mass produce Phals do it because they are an attractive plant that people want in their home. They are also relatively easy to grow, given the correct information. Those mass producers obviously care nothing about their product after they are sold. That is not the fault of the orchid or the orchid buyer. I grow all types of plants for their beauty. I care nothing about having an ugly rare plant.

    I purchased two “mini Phals” last summer. They were quite tiny is a pot that I would say was maybe 2” wide. After they were done blooming I repotted them in four inch pots. They have since grown quite a bit producing many roots and leaves but no bloom spikes. They are under grow lights for 12 hours a day. They are not real close to a window. They get fertilizer in their water three times a month. Am I doing something wrong? My other orchids bloom on a regular basis. These things have confounded me.

    • @therightpaph
      @therightpaph 5 місяців тому

      Hello! Thank you for your comment - with mini phals, they would probably be consider “standard” indicating that a temp drop during the fall season will most likely spike them. It sounds like they are ramping up for the blooming season this Fall. However, depending on the parents, you may get a spike over the summer - it’s hard to pinpoint without knowing the parentage but 9/10 it will require the fall temp drop. Btw this temp drop is expected in the evening times, 4-6 weeks should yield a spike… Hope this helps!

    Thanks for sharing your lovely collection 💚. I'm trying to grow Polychilos Phals in a desert climate too, I can empathize with you having to grow in low humidity. Maybe you can do a video on how you care for your Bellinas and other Phals in your current conditions? I was also wondering how many pellets do you add to your Phals because I have the exact same fertilizer brand at home and want to start using it. Also have you tried using a Brita water filter to get your ppm levels lower? It could be a cheaper way to get cleaner water. Happy growing and good luck 🌱

      @therightpaph 10 місяців тому

      Hi! Thank you for joining in! Hmmm I just may do a humidity video bc I’m honestly getting by without it unless I’m doing laundry lol. Regarding fertilizer. I put 1/8 tspn for pots 4 in and less, half for 5 in and full tspn for anything above 5.5… for me, brita filters didn’t work - only takes the ppl down about 10-15. I think those filters also have taste minerals that replace the removed calcium and magnesium so I’m uncertain about that investment. I use to use zero filters but with water having a 450 ppm, I was changing the filter every other watering with +100 plants 😳

    • @snowwmoon
      @snowwmoon 10 місяців тому

      @@therightpaph It would be amazing if you could do a video 😊, thanks for the measurements regarding the fertilizer 🌱🌱. I completely forgot that Brita filters remove calcium and magnesium!! I know that both those minerals are essential to plant growth so I may stop using my own Brita filters with that knowledge given that my TDS level is around 280 ppm here-- not that bad. It's nice having a youtuber that grows in the same environment as me 😁😁

    • @therightpaph
      @therightpaph 10 місяців тому

      I think I will do an update - I believe I do have one watering video up from here in Vegas. I miss NYC - I’m originally from the Bronx 😎 this rockwool certainly does sound promising so I’ll keep you updated if I give it a try. I still have so much moss left lol. Can I pack the wool like moss tho? Airy isn’t good for me here with it being so dry.

    Paph niveum grows in a small part of Penang island where i am from. Its a hot growing plant. In the forest, temp is around 32c to 36c in the day time. Night is around 25c to 28c. We dont have 4 seasons. Only hot and wet season. It grows in bright shade. Those in darker shade have a more beautiful leaf colour, the ones in bright places looks pale. Take note that the ones you have have adapt to your living conditions. Btw, good video. Keep it comin.

      Hi! And thank you for the valuable feedback. I have a few divisions of this plant. Your comment makes me want to try different lighting areas since I have the consistent heat already! Happy Growing!

      She is… and the desert has put her through the ringer. Unfortunately, she literally has just one leaf and one good root so my fingers are tightly crossed… the mother plant is doing much better but was one of my babies severely burned on the balcony - update on that coming very soon

    I love your setup and morning lighting is anazing but yes, still have to be careful!! Hope your plants that got hurned bounce back and thrive!! I've always used tap water left out for 24-48hrs and I use that to water all of my plants!! With plants that don't like chlorinated tap water such as my Spider plant, Red Maranta, Fiddle Leaf Fig, Peace Lilly, Red Begonia, Pilea Pepermoroides etc., I'll use distilled water!! This has worked out for me and my plants are doing well!! And I've been wanting to switch to another fertilizer so I'm definitely trying the Osmocote Plus thank you for sharing!!❤🥰🙏🙏

      Hi there! Thank you so much for watching! In my experience- leaving the water out will help with the chlorine but not the minerals - it actually seems to be more concentrated when I tested those trials with my ppm meter. I think it has to do with the actual rate of evaporation here in the desert… I don’t think the minerals even have the time to dissolve. Bottled water isn’t that hard either but still leaves a pretty thick film residue on my topsoil. I think the water is just TOO hard hard. I believe it’s around a 450 ppm
