Panama Canal Railway - 2021

Traditionally, I have been reaching into the past to put together a slideshow of some ancient project. This time I'll be reaching to way back to last month! This covers a visit to Panama in November 2021 to check out the railway and canal. It features former Amtrak F40PH's and delves a bit into their past.

1:15, back when metra and amtrak were both running f40s at the same time. These were the good ol’ days and they are long gone and are gone forever. Wish I could build myself a time machine and go back to this awesome era of the 1990’s of U.S. passenger commuter trains.
1:15, wow, perfect shot right there of both metra and amtrak f40phs pulling passenger trains passing each other. Wow, if I saw that in person, It would be quite the sight to see. I wish I was alive to see that, it would’ve been so lit.
Looks amazing!
Nice!
Thanks!
Awesome work as always Steven!
thanks!
Nice & shkorina ❤❤
wow, this is priceless!
Excellent video. Thank you for posting!
I actually cannot express how genuinely criminaly underated this channel and video actually is and this world actually genuinely needs more people actually like you and people like you are actually rare who are few and far between and damm lm the only person who has commented on this video in a month.
Totally agree! Thanks!
@stevenjbrown1697 actually thank you so much for pining me and damm 46 minutes ago how are you still replying to this video after so long and your actually to kind lol
i love gyrolights
Very enjoyable ride. Thanx!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another magnificent video as someone who’s is going to chile in late February for a class I don’t know the specifics but I have to interview one person there . I will be stopping in Santiago and Valparaiso as well so any recommendations would help.
fantastic video, and love the film shots you took- what camera was it? my dad was the head honcho at BN in this era, and he was actually the guy who made the purchase order to go with a full order of F40PHM-2 - the "winnebago" streamlined cabs, instead of an order of the square f40s like everyone else. he was also super fond of the E9s, having driven them for tens of thousands of hours. i remember this era so well being a super young kid. he took my brother and i on an E9 excursion trip as well around this time. i'll definitely tell him about your video here.
I think I had a pair of Canon AE-1's then.
Magnificent catches of the train coming by and pass, I like it 5 stars. Thumbs up. Hearing that amazing puffing and chufing sound and coaches coming through is absolutely crazy. Keep up the perfect work, my friend, I just liked and subscribed your channel. Happy New Year. Greetings from Portugal to the USA.
Thank you Portugal!!
@stevenjbrown1697 my pleasure.
did you film trains in Eritrea when traveling there?
Yes - did you watch the beginning? I put one image near the beginning in this video.
@@stevenjbrown1697 i did, a great shot of the old Eritrean Railway. It is also verification that the steam locomotives are still in use, i was getting very concerned that they had been replaced by now
@ The railroad actually hasn’t operated in years until this trip last January.
@@stevenjbrown1697 oh... so what happened to it? i didn't hear anything about it being not operational
great video. its always fascinating to see how different the norms and laws are in places so close yet so far to home
Excellent video as usual. Are those catenary poles from the defunct NdeM electrification?
Yes they are
Chased it into and out of KC on the southbound and back into town on the northbound return. 2024 was a blast for steam here with both 2816 and 4014 coming through town.
Fantastic Video and photos! I was at B-17 in Bensenville when it left. I think I was behind my friends blue car
Thank you Steven!
👍
Mexico added to the infinite list of places I need to visit before or die.
Got to see it in Wisconsin while we were heading for the iron range, it was a pain to catch twice. Holy cow.
Your videos are some of the best that I love to watch beginning to end, just like reading a fascinating story book, keep up the great work !
Wow - thanks for your kind comment. Glad you like them! It motivates me to create more.
Another fantastic video Steve! Keen to see more slideshows from the 80s and 90s, I love watching those ones
Thanks! I am slowly working on one about foaming the PNW when I moved there in 1990. One of these days I will get around to finishing it.
The crowds in Mexico were amazing! Think they were hard up for some steam action?
Probably no steam there in over 50 years.
I saw the locomotive in Mexico City. It was at the end of her trip in Mexico City. I had never seen a steam locomotives in steam.
Very nice - I hope you get more opportunities!
@stevenjbrown1697 Thank you! Aslo I loved your video about Chicago railroads in the 1970s
Did you stop in Kansas City when they had it parked next to the newly painted diesel?
I did not go into Kansas City.
I love those photos with the engine with the rain on the camera lens.
I was really kinda pissed after I got in the car and looked at them 😂. In retrospect - they are cool!
@@stevenjbrown1697 yes they are
This is the reason why UA-cam is the superior social media platform.

It’s Tottenham , not trottingham
As usual, thanks for refreshing my memory on how good you and I and some others had it. I remember all of this, some of it just barely, and from a distance, but you would do more in a year, than I did in maybe 5! Oh, and if you ever ran into a fan on the north side of things, with an unusually large German Shepherd, that was me!
Steven , they are LITTLE JOES , not 800's . Thanks for posting this !
I love traveling on trains in Canada , ACR cab ride , SSM to Hearst in a GP 9 in 1978 , Thru the Rockies in the cab of an FP9 in 1980 . Windsor to Toronto in 1975 December in an FPA 4 @80 MPH !! Thanks for posting these fine programs Steve .
Steven. I love you're videos. Thanks so much for taking the time to put them together. Hope your able to put more up soon.
New one going up today!
Can't believe no one has commented in 3 years! I was even More thrilled this time, thanks again!
I appreciate that, thanks!
The 70s were cool growing up as a kid awesome train stories!
Awesome trains enjoyed your video!
In 1977 I was only 6 years old. Living in NW suburban Round Lake. I was fascinated by the Milwaukee Road E9s and the F40Cs just before the F40PH was replacing the E9s... Great video and photos, Steven!
One year after that unfortunate day..
Just Comes To Show Time Does Not slow Down Or Stops.
I lived in Chicago from 2007 to 2014. Watching your video, I had a blast following along on Google Maps and recognizing the places. I did very little railfanning while I was there, as the city's deep, deep well of historic architecture was irresistible, but your photos make me regret it!
Very good video. I love those first and second generation diesel locomotives. I live in southwestern ct and enjoyed seeing the NYNH&H RR. Even after it became part of Penn Central I enjoyed seeing their second generation EMD and GE diesels. And I must say that as an owner of a diesel powered truck I love the smell of diesel fuel both before and after its burned !!
This video goes to show how simple things were back in the day back when the Internet never existed kids used to play outside daddy cutting the grass outside on a summer day Also the part at 8:54 to 8:59 reminded me of nostalgia critic saying "nine dollars for 15 gallons of gas [CENSORED] You 1987!"
Thanks for the history !!! I started with BNSF Suburban in February 1994 (I graduated from high school 1993) & they were all lined up in sitting near the main line. I went over there to get a good look at them & the stories they could tell. Sadly I saw a freight unit from Cicero Yard come & get them to be scrapped or sold off, that was truly a sad day for me.
Thank you
Someday I'll do a NY version of this.
803 runs from time to time at IRM
Fascinating! I did roughly the same thing from Palatine maybe ten years earlier but lost all my photos. Thanks for compiling all this along with your narration
