I was just looking for info on how you turn the electric system on. that seems to be different on each ship, so seemed useful to mention. but it wasn't...
What a satisfying result, great work!
I had the saildrive diaphragm replaced last year professionally for just over £1k - which was worth it to me but I can see why you did it yourselves. Orinoco is a 1989 model too, but I think the diaphragm was last done in 2002. Like yours it didn't look too bad but also like you I'm very pleased to have had it done.
Lovely to see some beautiful film of home ❤ big peace of mind to get that sail drive replaced! She’ll be like a new boat soon!
I’ve got more local footage coming for you!! Yes it’s so good to trust the boat again. We had a lovely sail up to Blyth last week and stayed a couple of nights! Even though it’s not far it was so good to have a change of scenery. The dolphins were out and it was so nice to be sailing again! How are you both doing? You’ve done so well with how far you have got. Say hello to Captain Yewey for us. X
Great video. Did you actually notice overheating or bad raw water flow before you replaced the intake hose?
I think the engine may have been on the verge of getting too hot before. I can’t believe the difference it’s made to the water flow. We now have double the water coming out of the exhaust, it’s amazing! We also had steam before at high rpm which we no longer have, so feel really pleased with it now. Thanks for watching. 👍
LOL.. are you trolling us with the chart listing a million steps, as you sound like it is a simple easy process? Total joke. I will never, not EVER, buy any sailboat with such a crazy hassle of a drive system. Simply a joke. I particularly like how Yanmar states that you must do all that ever time you haul your boat out of the water. So stupid. Only fools would get this.
Brilliant info! 🤟
Cheers for that and glad you found it useful.
Awesome ....
Thanks for that and thanks for watching.
That saildrive lower output shaft looks on camera to be excessively worn , will need repair or replacement or the new oil will emulsify again.
Great video. Have you ever thought of mounting a cannon on board?. Jetskis spring to mind.
Haha....trust me I have! 🤣
waited for the big reveal at the end what was the date on the old rubber diaphragm seal ? more than 7 years i guess
@@theresnobodyhere5778 Sorry for the suspense, but the reveal is in next weeks video! 😜 It was a shocker though! 😱
@@gavin_and_james_sailing its like a murder mystery i,m getting lieutenant Columbo onto it
muy bueno!! gracias
Thanks for watching! ⛵
Thanks for the quality video, how mutch you pay that saildrive kit, im curious and where you ordered it?
@@jussiryhanen7851 Thanks for watching. The kit cost £500 and it came with some pretty decent instructions too. We bought it direct from Volvo online
The pricing for these boat specific parts is crazy, I need to do the same job this winter so better start saving. Where did you get the parts from? Really useful video, appreciate you putting it together. The 30 has a slightly different setup but I think the process will be the same
We got the rudder bearings from David Morris who is the UK Etap parts specialist (davidmorrisboats.co.uk/spare-parts) and the saildrive kit was direct from Volvo. I know some people who have had rudder bearings manufactured at a fraction of the price, but you never know how good they will fit so I preferred to pay for the proper ones. Hopefully I will never have to do it again. Thanks for watching and glad you found it useful.
Genuinely upset by how much easier the access to the sail drive is on the 28 than on my 30. I still have PTSD from doing my diaphragm 😂
Access to the top of the engine is a bit tight but that back access is a good design. Just noticed you do UA-cam as well, we will check out your videos. Nice to see another Etap! 🙂
Thanks guys!! And Hi James, thanks for all your help and advice during our time at RQ. We now have Spellbound up at Amble. If you're both ever up here in Takaza give us a shout and we will stick the kettle on!! Great to meet you. Love the channel. Blessings. M&S
Thanks so much and so glad you have managed to get up to Amble. We will definitely be calling up there this summer so will give you a shout! Sorry for the delay in replying, we have been away quite a bit in the last couple of week. Is everything going ok with Spellbound now?
@@gavin_and_james_sailing Hey!! Sorry I missed the notification. Looking forward to more of your channel. It's a relief to get the engine sorted but there's always something to do. Just installing a diesle heater now, then we need to refurb our sprayhood somehow. Loving your channel!!
£900 😳 well done gents, great work! Greetings from Brittany 🇫🇷
Thanks both of you and yes that was an eye watering price! Hope all is going well with your adventures! ⛵️
Ich stehe grade am Anfang des Refit meiner Etap 28i, bin sehr gespannt wie es bei Euch weitergeht.
Have you had your Etap long, what projects are you doing? We got a lot more to come...next video will be out within the next week showing step by step how to replace the bearings.
@@gavin_and_james_sailing Not very long, buy it in 2021, after that i planned a lot and do nothing ;-) Just today it is in my barn and i start today with rudder removal and Saildrive renovation. then comes the painting of the hull
They are great boats! Ours had previously been used for racing so had had a hard life and needed quite a bit of attention. We have some sail drive videos coming out soon which will show the process of removing and re-hauling it. Where about are you located?

I always find lining up for haul out so stressful. Nice work!
Cheers, I think I was more stressed this time worrying if the rudder was going to come off ok too.
Hope the jobs are going well gents! We hope you intend on showing us Marvin and Daisy’s signets!!
All gone good thanks, we got everything done in the yard we wanted, but now the on water jobs start…and there’s loads! 😂 Hope you guys are doing good and enjoying yourselves!
Thank you James. My 28i doesn't have that hatch in the aft cabin, but I can see it is useful. I had the sail drive gator replaced as well as work on the rudder by the marina workshop at Gillingham, so interesting to see what actually happens :)
Hi David, I wonder if our aft cabin hatch was put in by one of the previous owners. I'm doing part 2 of the rudder bearing video next week and then we move onto the saildrive videos. I worked with James from Tyler marine on all the projects and feel like I've learnt loads and filmed as much as I can too. I feel really lucky as some contractors wouldn't have liked me working with them. Thanks for watching and hope you are managing to get out sailing!
Thanks for great vodeo. Can you please tell what is your boat model and size?
Thanks for watching, our boat is an Etap 28i. A 28ft Belgian cruising yacht. ⛵️
That poor old lighthouse is in a sad state of repair. I wish the dock company would repair it.
There's a few around where we are now that need attention too. I agree they all need looking after as they are a great piece of our heritage.
Great to see you both looking so well and so happy! The lady will be even more gorgeous when she's finished! x
Thanks Steve! We are back in the water now and moved back onboard. Now the on water jobs start! Got plenty more boatyard videos coming of all the work we have been doing! Hope you are both keeping well! x
@gavin_and_james_sailing glad you're both back on board. Looking forward to seeing more of the videos. The work you do fascinates me! We're both good thanks xx
Glad you are both doing ok & keeping out of mischief 😉, boat will look awesome once you get it done & good to know Gav will be working hard too eh James 🤣🤣😉xx
Good to hear from you Anne and hope you are doing ok. Thank you, we are back in the water now and just moved back aboard...now the on water jobs start! We have loads of videos coming of what we got up to in the boat yard. Hope you are staying out of trouble! 🤣🤣 xx
@@gavin_and_james_sailing glad to hear all is going well & will soon be ready to set sail again. Me? Trouble? Do this 2 words go together?….Hell Yeah-taking no prisoners 😉🤣🤣👍xx
a boat in the water deos,nt take long before needing work, its a harsh environment for it ,atleast yous are keeping on top of things ,if things get left too long it becomes a big refurb nothing worse than a good boat neglected until its repairs out weigh the value of boat
Exactly...we didn't have much money to spend on the boat last year, as it was our first year living abaord, so it was just bare minimum. This year we are going crazy and getting everything done. 15 years of it been a race boat had taken its toll, but we are getting there now! 😁
I love a wall of post it notes 😍 hope it all goes smoothly!
Thank you, everything is going ok so far🤞….apart from the weather! 😂Hope you guys are ok and having fun.
Back to land lubbers and boat maintenance🧑🔧 ⛵️feels like it never ends, just as u think ya cracked it, the boat finds you somet else to do.😂
It’s a big list of jobs this year, but all going well so far. Your right…it never stops! 😂
Nice to have a crew and a large yacht vs a 27ft alone across the Atlantic...seriously badass boat
Thanks for watching Mike and yes it was so good to have lots of crew around! Would love to hear more about your Atlantic journey as we have a similar sized yacht to you. Do you have a blog or on socials?
Really interesting, walked past that boat so many times and great to get a look around! The prawns looked beautiful!
Thanks guys and yes those Prawns were amazing! Can't beat locally caught sea food!
Beautiful boat, I had no idea. Thanks for the tour.
Thanks Keith, glad you enjoyed it. I loved looking around the boat too.
Nice looking boat! But, can you please put American subtitles on this video as we can't understand most of what you are saying. At times it sounds American but then it sounds french or something?? Are you speaking two different languages in this video?
Hi Coleen, thanks for watching. We are all speaking English but there's a few different strong regional accents going on. I've got a Yorkshire accent and Colin the Skipper has a Geordie accent. (North East of England). When we arrived in the NE I struggled to understand the Geordies too.
@@gavin_and_james_sailing ...very cool. It's funny because you write perfectly. No problems with reading it.
Such good info. Thanks! ❤
A year on and we still love living aboard!
Loving this channel ❤ thanks to the two people✌️🌿🌸
Thanks so much for this comment, its lovely to hear comments like this. We are working on our next video now which will hopefully be out in the next week or so.
Hygge 😊
It was one of the best Christmas Days we have had!
Massively appreciate the boat fact & other hard sailing info and how well they are told ✌️⚓️🌿

Thanks for oyster inspiration. I'm now going to explore my own region this Winter and hopefully enjoy a weekend of oyster gourmanding in Limfjorden, Denmark ✌️⚓️

Really nice to see a glimpse of the towns up along the east coast of UK, thanks for your filming eyes and editing ✌️🐬
We love the North East of England. We are hoping to make our way down to our south coast, but not sure if that will be this summer or next.
Brill explanation of the water cooling system, thanks✌️⚓️🐬
Glad it was helpful! We are hauling out in May and will be changing our sail drive diaphragm and rudder bearings.
Tuning in✌️⚓️ from Denmark 🐬
Hi Katrine from Denmark! Thanks for watching and glad you are enjoying the videos and find them useful. Where about are you in Denmark and do you have a boat at the moment?

Hi James. New Subscriber from Galway. Ireland. Great Adventure and video. I can't wait too see you both out on your boat lol 😅🇨🇮
Hi Liam, thank you and thanks for subscribing. We are looking forward to the sailing season and can’t wait to get back out there on our boat!
Hi James, the run was the distance that we had run from the previous position we had marked on the chart and logbook to this one. - Great video - Paul
Thanks Paul, that makes sense now. Just couldn't remember when I was editing. 👍
Great trip, night watch is great out of the light pollution I live on Marine Parade Saltburn and get the full force of the storms, its great some times
You will get some amazing views from up there, bet you are sick of this wind though, its been relentless this last few months. 🤣
What an experience! Glad you enjoyed it! That chessboard was a great idea! I love on these videos how you're both educational too, about where you are as well as what you're doing and how you're doing it. It's fantastic to see and hear that you're both having the time of your lives. Couldn't happen to two nicer gentlemen! x
Thanks so much Steve and glad you liked the info I put in there. We wont be leaving it so long this time until the next episode.😀
Guess they didn't use percentages for cloud cover back in great granddad's olden days. It's just eighths of the heavenly, or was it celestial, skydome above you...except when I was an apprentice I'm sure we used sixteenths because you can't look up and see eighths. Then from that guessed coverage halved it for the oktas. We did use zero too btw, but only when we got south of the humber.
Thanks for the info and thanks for watching. I was a bit rusty doing the log as its been while since my Yachtmaster theory.
