Why Wintersow? Reasons to Start Seeds in the Snow #gardeningtips #seedstarting #wintersowing #zone3
I dont think chickweed is the same as miners lettuce
Yup, I was incorrect in calling them the same. We do have plenty of both around here!
Can I do this with garlic?
I have done a little cheat with garlic when I failed to get the cloves in the ground in the fall. I was able to get some heads with this method. They were a bit smaller but still nice. ua-cam.com/video/wk1NH-AxFy4/v-deo.htmlsi=DXI81KIqxXvEIJs7
Happy Birthday 🎉
Thank you!
Would you be able to post a list of the seeds that you plant and the timing?
We have a published list of a planting schedule for zone 3 planting on our Faceboojd group: Winter Sowing & Planting (Alberta Saskatchewan Manitoba) . I also will be posting my plantings throughout the season on this channel
Soil?
I tend to use Promix organic herb and veggie blend. It has a light fertilizer that will sustain the seedlings until transplanting
Thanks for the labeling tricks. I have played”what’s this mystery plant” way too many times just like you.
I feel you on that - those mystery plants can be tough! I was so pleased with myself when that light bulb went off
Would you.. re use said milk jugs? Or is there concern about the plastics wearing down and breaking and absorbing into the plant/soil?
I find that in zone 3 harsh conditions, the milk jugs become brittle after 1 use. I recycle them at that point. Water cooler bottles are far sturdier and can be reused a few times
I'm so excited I found you! Someone posted one of your winter sowing videos on a Facebook group! I'm in Southern Alberta, and it can be hard to find some good local gardening info! You are lovely.
I'm so glad you've found us! Thanks for your kind words too
Happy birthday!
Thank you!
Luv it. Its so important to do our part.
Thank you
I live in zone 6b so when do you recommend to start.
Without knowing the specifics of where you are, I'd suggest this. Find out when the normal planting dates are for your region and work back from there. If you don't face Chinook winds, you could wintersow hardy perennials now. Wintersow hardy veg and annuals 6-8 weeks before normal planting out date and tender veg and annuals 4-6 weeks before
❤❤❤❤
Wishing you the best for 2025. (And great song choice!)
Happy New Year to you too!
Love rubarb! Have an amazing birthday 🎉
Thank you!
Rhubarb rocks!! Happy birthday to you...
I want to grow more hardy perennials. We have rhubarb and this is the first year I could pick any! I think raspberry bushes maybe my favorite bc my husband loves them and that makes me happy. Happy birthday! I think you live in a beautiful place.
Thanks for the birthday wishes! I feel grateful to get to grow at the mountainside homestead
Score!
It definitely was a good day, eh, when I found that beauty
Happy ❤ Birthday ❤. My favorite flowers are light butter yellow day lilies because there is a brand new beautiful butter yellow flower every day in the summer months in my front flower beds. I love 💗 pinkish purple cone flowers the purple pink one is my favorite because it makes me smile ❤ I also love 💗 the limelight hydrangeas that turn a pinkish color their absolutely gorgeous 💗💗💗 My favorite fruit is strawberries because they keep on growing and they taste the best grown in my garden. ❤ strawberries 🍓 🍓 🍓 My favorite ❤️ veggies is the cherry 🍒 tomatoes 🍅
Thanks, those are some of my favorites too! I really love those limelight hydrangeas and used them frequently when I used to work in landscape consulting
Another Christmas season baby. Congrats.
Happy Happy Birthday!
Thank you so much!
Can you tell me pleace number of this site? Thanks
I believe that is site 1, not certain. It may be site 2. They are both great
Beautiful prpject
It's been a labour of love
Excellent 😃🎉 I subscribed to your channel 🙏
Thanks for subscribing! I hope you enjoy the videos.
@frankie-lounelligan7050 You're Welcome 😁 Definitely will 🙏 Thank you..
Wonderful 🎉
It's definitely a feel-good time of year!
@frankie-lounelligan7050 It sure is 🎉
Has anyone tried the method of putting the seeds in a flat plastic container and spritzing daily?
I haven't done that much myself to eat but have tried that to check on germination rates for older seeds
Thank you
I'm glad you found it helpful.
Thank You for Sharing 🎉 I just subscribed ❤
I'm so glad you joined the flock!
Nice video, but PLEASE be careful with the scissors (and the knife) !
Thank you, I appreciate your concern... my half-hazard knife handling always drives my son crazy
Complaining about how much it hurts *doesn't use bias trimmers*
It hurts my heart more than it hurts my body
Is there any issue of the cross pollinating and getting wonky fruits from other plants? 🤔
Scarlet Runners can cross pollination with other runner beans. I'm actually interested in seeing how a scarlet runner/purple peacock hybrid would turn out. The roots from the scarlet runners should produce true scarlet runners every year.
Cool! Can I have your email? I have something to offer in regards in preserving your harvest.
Thanks for your interest but I don't share my personal contact info
Best of luck
Thanks!
Wow thanks - will be using my pickle juice
I'm so glad you found this helpful! I've got lots of pickle ice cubes tucked away in my freezer for Ceasars over the holidays.
I don’t want to run into a cougar, ever! I think if I saw a real wild cat I know I’d be dead or attacked or chased 😬😬😬ahhh! . And I’d for sure pee my pants. At least a little.lolol
I hear you! I trapped and relocated a bobcat once, and that was definitely more than enough excitement for me!
@ that sounds really cool. There is definitely a difference between going on a hunt vs a casual unassuming walk for a novice woods person.
What size is your geeenhouse?
The main floor is approx 26' x 52' . We have a smaller planting area on the top floor and another microgreen/seedling growing area between the 2 stacked seacans
I'm preparing mine tomorrow. There goes my Sunday.
I hope it turned out great!.....and you didn't end up choking too much
What were the seeds that you sprinkled after planting the garlic? My guess is orach.
You are absolutely right! It's such a great cold hardy crops and I've often interplanted it with garlic
Like watching people work. Love garlic. Love your energy.
Thanks so much, this variety of garlic is so delicious, i hope we get a good crop!
Very insightful
Thanks! I'm glad you found it useful.
What temps are you seeing inside Vs out right now? We're still fortunate in NB for it to be so warm. Thermal mass is somethihg we're really starting to think about for our new greenhouse this year!
We are seeing -10 outside and 6 inside during the nights. Right now we are tweaking some iinsulation, adding another layer of plastic and playing with strategies to better charge the climate battery below.
We will continue to share as we experiment. I hope our results can help. Don't hesitate to ask or use us for brainstorming ideas during your build.
Beautiful Frankie
It's always a treat to get a visit from these neighbours....but Luna doesn't agree!
What kind of wood did you use
I usually use a combo of hickory, maple and cherry or apple wood. I will sometimes use pruned branches from oir own trees but honestly, im not fussy about it
Not peanut butter unless organic Peanuts are sprayed a lot
Going to try this FrankieLou! Ty
It's so good on eggs!
How much was your dehydrator? I’d love one but I don’t have the room sadly 😢
I have two, this one was a bit pricey (I think about $150) but I got another one for free by using my PC points to purchase it
@ oh that’s not so bad! Good size too!
I did that again this year. I also did that with beet greens and stems
We did it with a bunch of our carrot greens too, can't let the goodness go to waste!
Cute haircut frankie. Love your videos
Thanks Jen!
Drayton Valley Alberta horseradish grower here. It's amazing when you get it fresh! I broke both my shovels on the roots just 2 weeks ago. The potency is amazing this year compared to the last 5. Maybe i just had better compost. I love horseradish. I've been growing about 12 years now.
I love it too, especially fresh & hot!
🎉❤🎉❤
Your so adorable 😂✨🌱 thanks for sharing, I feel everyone should be growing their own sprouts especially us winter folk who don't have garden access all year round❄️
I'm glad you liked thr video! I hope more folks start growing their own microgreens too, it's so easy and fun
