Here in Denmark it's very popular with so called Christania bikes, that can carry 2 small children side by side in the front. They are usually electric and a great way to carry children to institutions and groseries. They are a bit wide though, but fast enough to go along the mainstream bike traffic. Also a super alternative to cars locally!
Yes they are becoming more popular here too in places where there are quiet streets and good infrastructure- though not as popular as Denmark yet as our infrastructure still has some way to go!
I do like these videos, not just short trips. It reflects a reasonable desire for many that work in central London, that may live on the periphery to cycle in as opposed to using crowded trains. I would've killed for a good cycle route for me to get between Upton Park (East Ham) to Holborn Circus, and later Palmers Green, back when I was living there up to 2002.

I was looking for a new route to do this weekend so this came at the right time! I love your videos, they are extremely useful to me as I use them to have a sense of the routes beforehand and I can see how to cross some more tricky junctions. I’m a very nervous rider, so I like to see where I’m going to ride rather then going in blind and finding myself in busy roads 😬

I was actually in London this july. I stayed with a group of students in a college where we improved our skills in english ( none of us were native speakers ). During each day we had trips across the city and I have a story that I feel like you'll get a kick out of. We had about an hour of free time to explore Oxford Street and during that time a few of our guys went on a pedicab. He took them all the way to Lesecter Sqare and refused to take them back. We spent half an hour seaching for them until we finally found out where they were. Needless to say, I could hear our group leaders shouting at them a few floors below when we got back to the collage.😅
I remember Narrow Street being jammed with traffic one evening. Perhaps it was diverted from somewhere else? There's one day a year when it's busy for a different reason: the London Marathon. I sometimes visit Canary Wharf by hire bike. I leave it at the Westferry docking station, or go along Poplar High Street, through the underpass at Blackwall, and dock at Preston's Road/Lancaster Drive. If I'm also visiting somewhere on the Southern part of the Isle of Dogs, or Greenwich, I then pick up a bike from Inescon Square, and ride it down to Island Gardens. Canary Wharf is best explored on foot.
Interesting, could have been a crash on the Limehouse link or something? You can use it to bypass there but there’s no reason for anyone to do it most of the time

Narrow Street can be completely clogged westbound, especially in the afternoon and evening when this happens, as the green light timing to cross over the Rotherhithe tunnel approach is very short so the queue takes a long time to move. While it's quite nice to be cruising past the queue of cars going nowhere on Cable Street, Narrow Street when jammed presents the less-than-ideal option of some extended filtering on the right. There is the prospect of irate drivers turning back to contend with, and the narrowest section towards the bridge and the one-way part can be pinch points. Often see cyclists use the cycle contraflow, but it's not wide enough for two-way. Although once at Ropemakers, can easily cut through the park and go down Northey Street to get to the bridge or use the canal and cut through the estate to come out at Branch Road. Limehouse West is a private estate, but they allow cycling. Similarly with Limehouse Link closures, there's no way to know in advance if it's going to be congested or how badly. Sometimes there are only short queues from Branch Road around the one-way section, sometimes it can go all the way back to Westferry. Presumably drivers are using SatNav which routes them that way to avoid congestion on Commercial Road only for them to create new congestion.

Those tourist rickshaws pedicabs are a little wide for cycle lanes but then so might be those bikes that let parents ride around with kids in front so would be hard to ban wide rickshaws without parents ridin kids around needlessly sufferin from a ban. Maybe we ban commercial passenger ones. 90% properly segregated cycle lanes, great route!!
yeah fair point, maybe the solution is less to talk about the vehicle and more to say you can't take paying passengers - the dodgy ones would disappear overnight. as a pedestrian I've also had issues with them - was crossing the road at a green man near Marylebone last year and one ran the red and just absolutely tore into me, I had to jump out of the way. and on a bike they've been far more of a problem in the short space of time they've been operating than normal black cabs ever have honestly
the fares are definitely something which makes them useless as an actual public transport option. they might as well be those horse drawn carriages you see in other cities in Europe
My suggestions on pedicabs: (1) Regulate them using licences or permits, (2) Give them some sort of number plates or numbers to make it easier to report for rip-off fares, (3) Get them to adhere to traffic lights or get reported, (4) Limit width.
I can't help myself, as to suggestions on Pedicabs: A pedicure. Other comments are on their size, but it's even beyond that. It's an impediment for the intended use of bike paths.
@@stephensaines7100 They are still bikes strictly, so they can use the bike paths (and roads) just like those box cargo bikes. Also, I have nothing against people making an honest living legally and it can be a fun way to travel/sightsee for tourists. I do understand your frustration though. Often they are careless and hence dangerous for other cyclists. And the rip-off stories!!! 😡
Pedicabs/Rickshaws? They keep trying 'em don here (Brighton & Hove). For some odd reason, it's a challenge to get one from the seafront to the main station ... let alone the Race Course.
I don’t have a speedometer or tracking or anything but going by the distance and time it’s about 10mph average (though the time includes stops at lights etc so the actual speed when moving will be faster)
When developing the Dial-a-Ride service, we chose the idea that the fares should be the same as TFL Bus fares. Perhaps Pedi-cabs should charge per distance the same as a taxi.
Really like you videos. So hope now there is a change in Wandsworth Council and the whole Uxbridge scare has come to nothing the leadership there will improve the borough. Southwest London is poor to cycle through and Wandsworth council areas are a big part of that
I really hope so - unfortunately they haven't made a particularly great start. am hearing that the planned lanes on Nine Elms Lane connecting to Vauxhall (which would be useful for this route) have been defunded to spend the cash elsewhere, even though the previously administration supported them. haven't 100% confirmed yet but they were meant to start construction earlier this year and have been hearing persuasive evidence... the new council leader is also very anti LTN so I wouldn't expect them to do any

In all seriousness, I'd love it if ferries between Northern England / Scotland and Scandinavia started running again. If you want to travel to Europe in some way that doesn't involve flying, your options are pretty much Harwich to Hoek van Holland or the Eurostar. Maybe Tromso is a bit wishful thinking, but it should be perfectly possible to take a bike to some other destinations in Norway or Denmark at least, without needing to pack it up in a box and put it in the hold of a plane. There's plenty of freight traffic on these routes, but it's impossible to travel as a passenger on these vessels because the ports aren't licensed for that (although some used to be, e.g. Immingham).
I don't think ricksaws should be allowed on the cycle paths as they are too wide for them. I would say the same for certain types of cargo bikes - especially the ones that look like a mini van that I've seen about. Also ricksaws will be touting for business so will probably be stopping and starting abruptly which could cause confusion and frustration for cyclists using the cycleways.
yeah I'm generally very pro cargo bike but there are some that are almost like little vans and there's got to be a limit at some point, especially if they're going to get popular. that's also a good point about the rickshaws stopping and starting - I generally find them very frustrating, and I really wouldn't want to collide with one, they're pretty big
The cargo bikes at least don't tend to be any wider than a typical set of handlebars, although their boxy proportions might make them seem bigger. The rickshaws are a completely different story, they're more like a small car.
My view is that rickshaws add nothing and should be banned completely. Last week I was riding on the Cable St bike path, I which I find a bit narrow and came across a bike accident, which I think must have been caused by two bike hitting each other

Very interesting, very good utility, but very low on magic, as you allude to many times in the duration. As an 'outsider' I was uncomfortable with the level of tension needed. What is of great note and as @NivagSwerdna references below, the 'turning a loop on your inside' applies in many more instances than you do here. It's the same principle some delivery companies have instituted in some North Am cities, where left hand turns (right in your side of the mirror) are banned, and overall safety and wear reduction are enhanced by cutting across far fewer lanes of traffic than would otherwise occur. I even find this to be the case when walking my bike across signalled intersections. (It happens. Sometimes it becomes impossible to predict what even the crazies will do, let alone the average plebe driver) Once reaching the 'kerb', it's often much easier to do a 270 degree turn on foot with the bike to cross the next leg of the intersection than it is to 90 degrees. With a light machine, this also enables pivoting the turn on your back wheel with the front wheel held upright.
@@Londoncycleroutes left turns are banned mostly in San Francisco (this is my subjective experience, not sure what the city-wide policy is) but it's great - minor annoyance for drivers but huge safety gains. apparently mythbusters had an episode on routing efficiency and minimizing left turns is one of the best ways to route to minimize travel time.

I'd have no problems with pedecabs or similarly sized cargo bikes using the cycle paths round here. Partly because it's still a bike, partly because its going to be safer for them just as it is for me and partly because I don't feel the need to rush to overtake everybody else on bikes. Plus the more different groups that are using cycle infrastructure, the more groups will be pushing for it to be improved.
Interesting route from parliament sq to vauxhall bridge. Not sure I'd want to cross over the traffic or do the reverse triangle. Changing directions at Vauxhall bridge is 😬😬😬 but as I'm near Chelsea bridge I mostly go straight as I love there to the roundabout. Obviously the roundabout is terrifying. But I live in RBKC it all is. I went nuts yesterday as the single bit of cycle infrastructure they added over kings road by royal hospital there were a dozen lime bikes blocking the cycle in and out. I moved 2 but they are too heavy for me so I just kicked the rest over and screamed bit before wheeling my bike tho the gap made nd getting home. So no I'm not a fan of the pedicabs. They are criminal. I cycle the front way to canary wharf as the hill is a bit steep for me even if it does mean dismounting Nd getting the lift. That first set of lights on the way back has to be the slowest in London WHY x
Unfortunately it’s all down to the council rather than the MP, and the council remains solidly Tory 😫 but the government does have powers to give roads to TfL so maybe they could transfer strategic routes like Kensington high street and Chelsea embankment there
You shouldn't have to do this, but the Lime bikes are easier to move if you lift the back wheel up (there's a handle on the saddles), push from there and use the handlebars to steer. The locking mechanism is in the back wheel so this way you can still move them even if they're parked, and you're not having to lift the whole weight of the bike.
@@liamness thank you for that. They were so heavy! I cycled over cobblestones by the science museum and was back on crutches for 6 weeks so I really shouldn't have been moving Lime bikes at all. I don't normally mind straight roads and traffic but Kings road this Saturday was MENTAL so I cut off on the one bit of cycle infrastructure and it was blocked. I don't even like dismounting my bike without a kerb. I don't even remember dismounting. I was just furious that Lime had put them there x

One was missing a saddle so I dragged it out - with my back that still hurts now, my bike fell & my phone out of my basket as I was picking my bike & phone up a Muslim male picked up the Lime and forced it back to where Id just dragged it out of. I got upset he mocked me & started abusing me. I went to my appointment and when I returned he had been back jamming the lime with the missing saddle against my bike and blocked me Access ♿ my bike with other limes. This is now out of control when they are being used as weapons against disabled females. A builder getting his lunch helped get my bike out x

The roundabout is pretty hairy to be honest, statistically it’s London’s most dangerous junction for cycling too I believe
Something really nice in the power station is their underground bike hub thing - really useful for keeping bike after ride

It's the same principle some delivery companies have instituted in some North Am cities, where left hand turns (right in your side of the mirror) are banned, and overall safety and wear reduction are enhanced by cutting across far fewer lanes of traffic than would otherwise occur.
I even find this to be the case when walking my bike across signalled intersections. (It happens. Sometimes it becomes impossible to predict what even the crazies will do, let alone the average plebe driver) Once reaching the 'kerb', it's often much easier to do a 270 degree turn on foot with the bike to cross the next leg of the intersection than it is to 90 degrees. With a light machine, this also enables pivoting the turn on your back wheel with the front wheel held upright.

@@Londoncycleroutes left turns are banned mostly in San Francisco (this is my subjective experience, not sure what the city-wide policy is) but it's great - minor annoyance for drivers but huge safety gains. apparently mythbusters had an episode on routing efficiency and minimizing left turns is one of the best ways to route to minimize travel time.

Ostensibly the article explains the research behind it, and most of the findings relate exquisitely to cyclists!
I'd have no problems with pedecabs or similarly sized cargo bikes using the cycle paths round here. Partly because it's still a bike, partly because its going to be safer for them just as it is for me and partly because I don't feel the need to rush to overtake everybody else on bikes. Plus the more different groups that are using cycle infrastructure, the more groups will be pushing for it to be improved.

Interesting route from parliament sq to vauxhall bridge. Not sure I'd want to cross over the traffic or do the reverse triangle. Changing directions at Vauxhall bridge is 😬😬😬 but as I'm near Chelsea bridge I mostly go straight as I love there to the roundabout. Obviously the roundabout is terrifying. But I live in RBKC it all is. I went nuts yesterday as the single bit of cycle infrastructure they added over kings road by royal hospital there were a dozen lime bikes blocking the cycle in and out. I moved 2 but they are too heavy for me so I just kicked the rest over and screamed bit before wheeling my bike tho the gap made nd getting home. So no I'm not a fan of the pedicabs. They are criminal. I cycle the front way to canary wharf as the hill is a bit steep for me even if it does mean dismounting Nd getting the lift. That first set of lights on the way back has to be the slowest in London WHY x
The Tories even lost Chelsea in the election so surely if there is a labour MP now RBKC can get some cycle routes x
Unfortunately it’s all down to the council rather than the MP, and the council remains solidly Tory 😫 but the government does have powers to give roads to TfL so maybe they could transfer strategic routes like Kensington high street and Chelsea embankment there
You shouldn't have to do this, but the Lime bikes are easier to move if you lift the back wheel up (there's a handle on the saddles), push from there and use the handlebars to steer. The locking mechanism is in the back wheel so this way you can still move them even if they're parked, and you're not having to lift the whole weight of the bike.
@@liamness thank you for that. They were so heavy! I cycled over cobblestones by the science museum and was back on crutches for 6 weeks so I really shouldn't have been moving Lime bikes at all. I don't normally mind straight roads and traffic but Kings road this Saturday was MENTAL so I cut off on the one bit of cycle infrastructure and it was blocked. I don't even like dismounting my bike without a kerb. I don't even remember dismounting. I was just furious that Lime had put them there x
@@liamnessI am so done with them now. I had an appointment by Sloane Square and there were so many lime bikes there was nowhere for me to lock my bike. One was missing a saddle so I dragged it out - with my back that still hurts now, my bike fell & my phone out of my basket as I was picking my bike & phone up a Muslim male picked up the Lime and forced it back to where Id just dragged it out of. I got upset he mocked me & started abusing me. I went to my appointment and when I returned he had been back jamming the lime with the missing saddle against my bike and blocked me Access ♿ my bike with other limes. This is now out of control when they are being used as weapons against disabled females. A builder getting his lunch helped get my bike out x
I'm not a fan of rickshaws. Mostly they seem to be empty, so no wonder they end up ripping off the few fares that they do get. And the music! I also wonder what kind of deals the riders have to sign. Are they paying a flat fee to rent one? It seems open to abuse
