Not all painters are created equal. A lot of painters don't understand that in order to paint vinyl siding they MUST use a vinyl safe paint with vinyl safe colorants. This one client of ours had a previous painter paint their home without vinyl safe paint and colorants and all the vinyl siding warped. Hiring the wrong painter can cost you dearly in the long run.

How come there are a ton of cedar siding that doesn’t peel off? My house has cedar siding and it looks like new. It’s original from when the house was built.
What do you charge per sqf?
I was a sucker by a painter/contractor. Mine started peeling after months. I'm stuck now having to replace it. It was grooved cedar (vertical grooves) so I can't sand it and it was fine for 40 years prior w/o rotting or damage.
I'm really sorry to hear that. I wish more painters understood the repercussions on doing the project wrong. Hope you get things resolved
What would a job that size cost about if you don't mind me asking
It may be between $3k - $4k. Depends on number of colors and other factors. Prices vary on region as well
A good layer primer will make paint last longer, I painted my cedar siding 10 years ago and never got peeling or fading issues so far, To me looks like the painter just used cheap paint without even priming first, then you will have this issue. For stain the layer of wood will still peal off, But because it penetrates wood a little the color change will not be so apparent
It also depends what part of the country you live in. In the Midwest, we go through hot humid summers and and then dry cold winters. This causes the cedar to move more than what a good primer and paint can hold. If you have good luck with it then you're lucky because in Michigan, where I'm from, I've seen way too many peeling paint on cedar. I'd always prefer fade to peeling.
I painted 40 year old siding that had some warping just from age and heat I assume . I watched many videos of professionals such as yourself and they all say the same thing . I followed all the rules and it is two years old now and is holding up very well .I grew up in a wood and brick house and the wood had to be scraped stained then rubbed . This is allot easier , Lol
How do you not paint over the air holes within the siding?
If you paint over them with a sprayer at the correct mils of paint then it doesn't clog the air holed. Same with the soffit. If you paint too heavy, that's when you have too many problems with air flow and potential peeling
@@mikebeaulieu9116 thanks 😊
Is this still holding up?
Oh yes. We used the right system. I'll try to upload some recent pictures of the storage units
Where's the part where you actually show how to prep and paint?
I was explaining what things needed to be done in order to properly paint this type of siding. I didn't do multiple videos because I was heading to multiple job sites during the day. Is there a part of the process that you have a question on?
@@mikebeaulieu9116 Ok that's fine but certainly a misleading video title; it's frustrating because you're like the 3rd video in a row that says "how to" paint board and batten and not a single one actually shows "how". Where all to caulk? Where NOT to caulk? What type of caulk? What wood filler for nail holes? How to apply wood filler? Pressure wash before or after caulking? Primer recommendations? Recommended sheen for exterior paint? Does exterior spray need to be back rolled?
Ive got 30 year old cream colored vinyl, ide like to change the color to a light cedar look,to resemble a cedar siding, and also thinking of a brown to make it look more log cabinish.what do you recommend? Thanks for the info
I would use Sherwin Williams Latitude paint in a Satin sheen. Tell them that you are putting it on vinyl siding so you need the vinyl safe formula. That color should be easy for them to do
I've got a green metal roof, I'd like to go dark brown 🟤,is that possible?
@gregory4247 yes that's possible but if it for your home or garage I would recommend a roof coating system like Kool Seal or an elastomeric system like that. If you use cheaper items you will deal with peeling for many many years and a lot of headaches.
I'm wanting to do forest green on my vinyl siding. If it's the safe paint used at Sherwin Williams. Would it be okay or will it warp still? I live in Oklahoma. Thanks..
You may use a premium line from Sherwin Williams and let them know you are painting it on vinyl so that they put it in a vinyl safe formula.
And if you had any kind of a clue you wouldn’t be using a scraper. You would use infrared heat and make short work of removing all of the bad paint job so it could be properly sealed with linseed or my personal favorite tung oil. Both of which can be applied with a pump sprayer and brushes and rags. Farmers also often used K1 kero and old motor oil at 50/50 mix. It’s still used quite often today. We always paint the horse fences with it. Helps stop them from chewing for a year or so
you would be out of your mind to go through the work of staining a house to do it with linseed oil [organic and harbor mold] or motor oil [toxic as hell]. If someone is going through the trouble of stripping and staining their house they might as well use a product that the general population finds aesthetically pleasing and doesn’t kill resale value. Go tell your home owners insurance you coated your house in motor oil 😂
And why would they use a heat gun? They are stripping the loose paint, priming and painting, not stripping the house down. And besides, even if they were stripping the house most people are on a budget and don’t want to pay for a guy to spend Twice the time with a heat gun with they could sand it down in a day and be done.
@@MavSalads-ey3ch There is no way you could tell if motor oil way used after a week or so.
Video of how to paint siding ,didn’t paint a single board!
What if you have previously put paint on cedar and I sanded all prior coating off back to bare wood. How do i then properly prep and stain?
My recommendation would be to use an oil based stain to block any tannin bleeds and then apply a solid color acrylic siding stain. You'll want to work in the primer and stain to ensure proper application so there are no air pockets between the stain and the wood.
Well that was minimal info
Is there a question I could answer for you?
Great advice, thank you for taking the time to film this.
What is the proper way to apply solid stain to new cedar siding? Is an oil based primer helpful or not in this situation? Thank you.
2 coats of solid stain should work
I'm in this same situation at my house. This time around, I bought a paint shaver and I'm taking it back to bare red cedar. What product should I use to keep the natural color nice and bright?
Do you want a clear sealer or a solid color but in a stain?
@mikebeaulieu9116 clear. I started the front with a product called nano. It's clear but somehow offers uv protection
@@justindoan6798 , I'm not too familiar with that product. You could go with a natural toner in the Sherwin Williams Woodscapes product. Natural toner has just a hint of tint, to offer more UV protection and it has the same look of the wood when it is wet.
Hi I watched another video where it said that in the winter of course the siding will expand for up to half an inch. Then it will show the old color of that half inch. So is it better to wait until it expands? Hope this wasn't a stupid question. Thank you
Great question! Yes, the siding does move and exposes areas that were not painted. What I offer my clients in one free touch up in the Fall. We want the temps to be in the 40s to 50s during the day for the touch up. Now, painting in the Fall or in summer won't always catch extreme movement that you may see in the middle of winter. Typically early spring you're going to be able to do a touch up as well at the seams. I hope this helps!
great information. thank you
I don’t know. Stain doesn’t make it last much longer supposedly, but if you keep repainting, it can last forever?
What you really are comparing is peeling vs fading. Once it starts peeling it doesn't matter what paint you put on top it will peeling in a couple years after it starts. Stain will just fade so you can wash and restain and it will look fresh and new again
I’m looking to paint my siding navy blue is there a brand or safe color similar if not navy blue that i can use that is safe. Thank u in advance
Take a look at Sherwin Williams and ask to look at vinyl safe colors. They have a booklet with colors but they can also mix a lot of other colors into a vinyl safe. I personally use the Latitude line from Sherwin Williams.
Thank you for this video! I just got some siding replaced with board and batten hardi board and this is the only video I could find to help me prep and paint it. That house looks great. Thank you!!
Great info! I have a ranch built in 1994 sided in all Redwood. The previous owner painted the Redwood siding. OMG! Never ever paint wood. Wood was always meant to be stained.
You're absolutely correct!
if you never painted wood, everyones siding would be wood colored. i dont get it. Just use a sealing primer. Paint will always looks good
I paint many cedar siding outsides that have 8 inch tall boards. These outsides were sadly sprayed on one side while the back isn't primed. I use a broad knife to scrape loose paint, sand with 36 grit sandpaper nail down loose boards, caulk with vulkum and prime with XIM or Peel bond from Halman Lindsey or Sherwin-Williams. I finish coat with Woodscapes by brushing and rolling the final coat. In a perfect world those boards should be primed on the back and Tyvac behind it, but in the 90's things were done fast and as cheap as possible.
Do you use caulk to fill in the nail holes as well? Do you sand the wood first to keep from getting clogs of paint on each hole?
Some painters caulk the holes but they should be wood filled and there are a couple different options. Then sand the filler so it's flushed with wood. You'd be good to go after that.
How can I match my existing siding that installed in 2000?
If you have any extra pieces then you can bring that to Sherwin-Williams to have them color match it
I want to repaint my house but I’m not sure how to prep and what material I should use. I’m fairly sure it is stain that’s currently on it because it has been there for a very long time and is beat up and peeling. I would assume if it was painted it would be completely gone by now. So, can I remove the flaking stain and then go over with new stain? Or do I need to use the oil based primer + paint?
If I saw a picture of your siding I could give you better advice. The areas that are peeling you will need to scrape, use oil primer and then a solid color stain. That's only if it is stain on the house currently. Paint would still be holding in different areas so the amount of peeling doesn't necessarily say it's stain or paint. You can send me a pic at mike at paintgr .com and I'll get back to you. Thanks!
Would season flex by Sherwin work? The paint flexes somewhat. They paint a nurf football as a demo at the store. Also, what do you think of zinzer pealstop, it's a triple think primer.
A good peel stop primer would be excellent. I've used Sherwin Williams Peel Bond primer with great success
Would sw snowbound be a safe color to use
Yes as long as you tell Sherwin Williams to use a vinyl safe formula. I believe snowbound requires a little black so they need to adjust it slightly
okay so if it is dark paint then why did the light paint color warp it? ACTUALLY I believe the warping is just cheap siding. How and why do I believe this. Because my last home was new construction and a light taupe color and it warp in year one with no paint on it. Cheaper builder grade vinyl siding warps period. But those that disagree call and support your local painter...he needs the work. Another reason for warping is poor installation technique. Put on too tight etc.
This happened after it was painted. That's how I know and I've seen it before. Yes there are other factors that warp siding but this video is specifically about painting vinyl siding and the right and wrong ways of doing it. Also it's more specifically about the colorants used and type of paint for that substrate.
EXACTLY.
I want to paint my house Red. I can’t find it anywhere. Is that a possibility
I hope you didn't paint your house red lol
Good to know was just dumb curious about this
What is the best white vinyl safe paint /brand to cover a light/medium grey color? Me and my husband want to do the home we’re buying. We have a paint sprayer. Would this be best to use?
I personally like Sherwin williams resilience or emerald line as a vinyl safe paint. Make sure you tell them it is going on vinyl because if your white leans to the gray a little bit they would natural add black, which is the colorant you want to avoid. Spraying is also the recommend method for painting vinyl siding. Just make sure you wash it real good first. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Not a problem in Alaska 😝
It needs to be stripped down to bare wood with paint shaver
It could be but you'd loose the rough cut cedar look
I really liked your video. I grew up in Traverse city. Moved to Los Angeles in 88 and been a custom painting contractor since 1994. I contract now in California and Arizona. And vinyl siding I have never even seen it out west . I know it has been popular in Michigan for years. Thank you so much ! I thought I saw! About everything in the paint world. But you taught me a new thing ! Wish you all the best out there.
Thank you for the kind words and I hope the most success to you and your business!
Excellent video! I am doing a re-siding job for a client right now who painted their white siding almost completely black. They are now suing the painting company which I told the customer was probably not their fault. I figured it had more to do with how the siding was hung to begin with maybe nailed down to tide and the warping occurred since then either way the house looks terrible and Hass to be recited. I guess ultimately it comes down to the experience of the painter who in this case hasn’t had this experience before as they go forward they will be able to advise customers what not to do but in this case it cost them $15,000 in lost revenue and potentially legal fees.
Painting is one of those professions that is easy to get into but takes years to really learn. Of course you have to have a willingness to learn the proper method of painting and understand the products you are using and why. Unfortunately, a lot of painters don't and are willing to paint anything in hopes that it will last and look good.
My daughter and her husband bought a house in Chicago. The white vinyl siding was nailed tight and they decided to paint it a dark gray. What a mess!! I am in the process of tearing it all the off a residing it 😱 some people shouldn’t be allowed near and kind of tool 🤪
When you repaint a painted vinyl that has had warpage like this home. Is the warpage permanent or does the now vinyl safe paint allow the vinyl to lay flat since it is more heat tolerant?
Unfortunately, there is no coming back from it. Once the vinyl has warped you would have to replace it.
So vinyl safe paint would not cause this problem now days?
That is correct. They do research in the hot Arizona sun to check for fade, wear, warping.
I missed where you mentioned how to paint the cement board. Is it from the caulking??
A couple different ways. After the prep has been done, caulking included, then you can either spray the finish for brush and roll it.
What if you just want to paint corner post ?
I would still use a vinyl safe paint even though the vinyl is thicker. You just don't want to risk it failing because the cost to replace all those are too much.
This is exactly what was done to my house that I bought 10 years ago I'm just peeling off and scraping as much of the stuff on the bottom of the cedar shakes and on the face that's peeling and applying stain the same color good and thick over everything so it soaks it all in and then as time goes on I'm just going to continue to peel paint and stain over peel paint and staying over etc I'm thinking it's the easiest thing to do because the stain will actually get behind the loose paint and as the paint peels I can add more stain since I'm doing it myself I don't care about the waste of time. It's going to look much better than what it looks like now because there's a lot of peeling already happening and it's going to destroy the cedar if it's not sealed with the stain.
I don’t know what I’m looking at to see warping….
Thank you for this information I had no idea. Where do you suggest I go to get vinal safe paint?
Sherwin williams carries vinyl safe paint.
Would you have to replace all the vinyl sidings before painting again since it’s already warped?
Yes it would all have to be replaced.
@@newlookpaintingcompanyllco9209 You didn’t mention that in the video.
@@american236 you're right. I only focused on the right way to paint vinyl. It matters so much because once you painted it wrong and it warps, then the cost become more than 4x times to repair.
We have plastic cedar shingles. We dislike the color. In your opinion should we paint them or use stain? Thank you.
Thank you for the question. It sounds like your cedar shake is vinyl. I would use a vinyl safe paint with vinyl safe colorants. I have another video talking about vinyl siding. I would recommend Sherwin-Williams Resilience Paint in a satin sheen and let them know it will be going on vinyl so they can use vinyl safe colorants.
@@newlookpaintingcompanyllco9209 Thank you.
What is the difference between cedar siding and wood siding? Cedar is wood, but is it less porous?
Cedar is a soft wood and is more porous than some other woods. The typical old lap siding is a semi-hardwood or even a pinewood. They do not absorb stain the same way and was meant to be painted. Cedar siding is made to be stained.
@@newlookpaintingcompanyllco9209 thank you so much!!! We have wood siding that’s been solid stained. On the areas of our home that sun hits, the stain has worn away. We are about to have it painted or stained and deciding on which to do! Thank you for your reply to my question. They would prime first if they painted or if the stained they’d use a solid stain product.
@@justatitle personally I prefer the fade of stain over the peeled levels of paint. Stain does require more maintenance. Around every 7-12 years will the house need to be stained.
@@newlookpaintingcompanyllco9209 if we take off our siding on our new build. Right above garage and tip of house basically. If we take it off and do cedar siding. Do we stain and then put a waterproof thing on top? Or just let it fade and re stain
@@Ilovemyprincesslexi I would just use the stain. The stain that goes on cedar siding is different from the stain you do on interior items or even doors. The exterior siding stains is both a stain and sealer. I would use the exterior stain and look at washing and refreshing every 7 - 12 years. My preferred brand is the Cabot Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain. Next would be Benjamin Moore's siding stain and the Sherwin Williams Woodscape line.
Is behr exterior paint a good choice for vinyl?
A high quality behr paint will adhere but the most important part is the colorants used to get to the color. Ask if they have vinyl safe formulas. If they don't know what you are talking about then go to Sherwin Williams to ensure your siding doesn't warp.
@@newlookpaintingcompanyllco9209 thank you! My house was built in 93 and I'm very eager to make it look new again
