      That's a cool sound from that Whisper-penny, isn't it?

      @@JoshRzepkaMusic Yes, the sound is very cool and it has nice subtleties. The mute is invisible yet it still mutes softly & nicely. Sweet!

    Completely recommended, Whisper Penny it’s 🔝
    Back off on overblow, adjust your airflow to it, and the effect will be surprisingly better. Works better on deeper cups for sure, but the most important it’s don’t overblow. And can be a crucial “examination” on “how deep our lips are in the Cup” 😊

    Nice playing with the Penny Whisper. I wondered how tight the cup was adjusted tho. That can change the sound a lot, and I assume you had it adjusted to the way you like it. I tend to prefer a tight cup - one of the reasons I like the Shastocks. BTW, I'm one of those guys who made a mute from a bottle-shaped object too. Not a beer bottle tho. I used an 8.5 oz Diet Coke can. It's not too bad. I did have to paint it tho, cuz you could read the can's label in the reflection inside the bell and I didn't want to be a walking advertisement for Coke products. I used Ray Robinson colors. I just checked and I can't tell if Coke is still using those cans. I haven't seen them recently tho.

      Thanks! I said I'd start including more playing ... I'll try and continue that moving forward.
      The cup wasn't too tight - it was open a little bit as though I were using it in an ensemble, where I imagine most people would use it, and also where I preferred the sound on this particular mute.
      The very last example that I play it was slightly tighter. How does your bottle mute play? What would you compare it to?

    Johs,
    Ole Edvard Antonsen had a maker build him a special mpc. that had the same effect as the 'thumbtack' (or a wisper penny as you have here).
    This was safer (with a thumbtack only, you had the danger of swallowing it).
    He used this muffled sound when making a crossover album in 1992 called "Tour de Force" (one tune was Honky Tonk Women where you hear this effect).

    Cool discoveries this week! The Whisper-penny is a way to go for soft ballads. Once I heard Roy Hargrove live playing flugel with such a breathy sound. I wonder, maybe he used this device? And didn't they invented the cup mute like that - stick a beer bottle into the bell and cover it with a cup?

    • @JoshRzepkaMusic
      @JoshRzepkaMusic  Рік тому +1

      Thanks! Not sure on RH, maybe some other players would know ...? Cup mute invention, that's a good question. According to Tom Crown, the first cup mute patent in the USA was in 1899, but that isn't to say people weren't making versions well before that.

      Roy don’t used whisper penny, but Inderbinen horn’s have their own thing, almost favors that kind of whisper sound. Love them.

      I only played the first two notes as an AB demo with open horn / whisper-penny. I could make a short video with a short back and forth if people would find that helpful. I figured a note or two would illustrate how dramatic the change was.

    I'm totally down with the Whisper-Penny, but at 50 Eros +s/h for a little drilled out piece of metal and stem ?!!? I think I'll pass on that. Any other more affordable alternatives?

    • @JoshRzepkaMusic
      @JoshRzepkaMusic  Рік тому +1

      I'm not sure ... I'm unfamiliar with any alternatives. But from a safety perspective, do NOT use a thumbtack. If I see any others I'll try and check them out. Check out the comment here from Ole J. Utnes.

      Shirt button, the thinners, makes almost the same thing. But they’re dangerous, anyone can easily swallow. I’ve make the attempt, experiment and it works, but bought the original W.P. a few years ago and love this thing. Unique sound 🔝

      @@louramoreira Great tip. Thanks. BTW, I'm looking to get a airy sound like Till Brönner, without having to mess with my chops to get it. Would the WP get me that breathy sound? ua-cam.com/video/ZhHzw7fXmyM/v-deo.html

      @louramoreira Рік тому +1

      @@unknownquantity4440yes almost, that’s a similar sound, you need to adapt on whisper and experiment. But there’re a specific technique for “Till’s sound”. Play softer, really softer, and with a more open embouchure center. For this you don’t need a Whisper Penny.

      NOT! Lead!

    The whisper penny: the world's most expensive elongated pin-tack 😂😂. 60 euros for THAT!? Seriously ? I love your reviews but man that's a lot of money.

    • @JoshRzepkaMusic
      @JoshRzepkaMusic  3 місяці тому

      It is expensive for what appears to be a small piece of metal, but it's safe, and it works very well and is consistent. I've used it from time to time, so I think it's got utility, just depends on what you're looking for musically. I will admit, I've spent more money on less useful things ... 😂😂
