From 5.30pm, Sat 5th Sep 1998, here's LWT's 30th anniversary ident, followed by the opening of Morecambe & Wise - Encore, a compilation of their Thames material. The first sketch in episode 1 is 'The Bell Ringer', from M&W's show of 12th Oct 1983 (Series 4, Episode 5).
Spitting image was pure class
Favourite line: "I dunno Saint, the ball sounds a bit ollow to me!"
Intresting that prior to the tournament, Gerry Lofus was the man for ITV & I think a young Barry Davis commented on an England game. Hugh Johns seem to have come from nowhere. ITV were a bit disjointed with Channel not showing any coverage ( I wonder what they showed), Scottish understandly diped in & out with even ABC who were responsible for World of Sport at that time, only showing the 2nd half of England v Mexico on a Saturday night. In the 1970s Brian Moore was the main man but not England Games & even in the 80s it was Martyn Tyler
Punditry better here than now
What Alan should have said about his “spine in a bap joke.”
I love how Chris’s reply gets more and more offensive with every word and then just keeps going.
God save us from todays woke punditry!
The 4th goal was ilegal
World Cup of World Cups podcast brought me here
Classic, you won’t ever get better than Saint and Greavsie!!
This is golden !
Hugh Johns. A legend.
Hugh John's sa great commentator. I prefer this than the Ken Wolsenholm broadcast.
I loved that Saint & Greavesie Saturday slot. I don't recall that Spitting Image one though.
Now we have Alex Scott. RIP English football culture
Absolutely 👏
Some things never change, getting a ref in for his opinion.
Love this sketch. Saint has not got a clue what is coming next but has to act professional not laugh and keep the show going. Even the studio crew could not stop laughing. One of the best ever.
This is brilliant. I had no idea this existed and I am a big fan.
Brilliant loved saint & Greavsie I miss all these guys they were just great, I want to go back to the 80’s and 90’s fucking sick of this place
"That is a bit over the top Ron"
Here day after Tyler announced his retirement from football commentating. Best of luck to him!
The end when the team are running around Wembley with the world cup trophy it's absolutely surreal... it's like a dream... like it happened in a alternative reality... amazing
I ❤ Love The Way How Peter Brackley Did This Scene on Saint & Greavsie whilst Jimmy Greaves was Off Sick. This Made Me Laugh A lot.
Did Greaves's voice perfectly.
The laughter from the crew is brilliant..
I suppose another reason for 'Richard Davies' to become 'Dickie Davies', was the actor of the same name working at the same studios on 'Please Sir' !
You'd never get away with this today. People actually having fun on a football preview programme.
God how I loved Spitting Image! ❤
I always feel sorry for Hugh Johns being much maligned for his commentary at the 'They think it's all over' moment. Any other occasion and John's commentary would have been carved in stone.
As good as the day it was made. Has me in stiches
That theme tune!! The highlight of my weekend as a kid in the 80s 😊😊😊
Why was the Jimmy Hill puppet sans his glasses and moustache? (I’m aware said puppet isn’t in this video, but virtually all the videos, that were once here, that *did* have said puppet, have been taken down, owing to the copyright Nazis - mainly ITV)
Absolute golden era of sports television programmes. It’ll never be as good as this again. Glad I was around to see it and have the cherished memories.
Couldn't agree more
Well said mate. The woke crap of today is truly awful/
I think we;ve found the replacement for Lineker MOTD
R.I.P Dickie Davies, Ian St John and Jimmy Greaves... Three amazing sports personalities who are dearly missed...
And now dickie Davies joins saint and greavsie in the spirit world 🌎 RIP dickie 🙏❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧❤️🙏 Feb twenty three
watching this tonight just as harry kane beats his Tottenham record but needs another 150 to pass his total and that excludes Barnet
Both Eric and Tommy Coopers quickfire humor was essentially the same...seldom seen but unique characters of yesteryear. Benny Hill was featured more often here.
R.I.P Jimmy Greaves.
Resenbrink years later admitted he dived for the penalty.
Alan BELL? HAROLD Ramsey? Which game was Hugh Johns watching???!!!😄😄
The woke wouldn’t like it !!! But me I LOVED IT
I love it too. Wokes get lost
Wonderful stuff and a reminder of when football was a laugh. Never to be seen again sadly.
Fantastic goal 🥅 from archie but the rest is history, lawie mac talks some shite 💩 💩 💩
This would never happen today, someone somewhere would be up in arms and offended by some of this. These two had such good chemistry and the show itself was entertaining and just so funny.
You'll never see TV this good again... but thanks to uploads like this we can watch it anytime we please!
Russell Dever is 1,00% the kind of person who uses “edgy” as an insult in the present day.
Absolutely loved these too guys .say missed . Great players great personalities. RIP JIMMY AND IAN . TERRY EVERTONIAN
Match of the day has nothing on this programme.
