firstly its ok to clean the erase head LHS of the drum and the audio head RHS of the drum with a cotton bud. NEVER use one to clean the drum. for that you need a chamois patch. if theres no audio to the tv is there any out of the rca socket on the rear? next thing would be to get lid off, put a tape in and while playing put your finger on the audio head circuit board ( no issues its super low voltage) and you should hear a loud humming from the tv. reply to this if you are still have issues, i used to have to repair old tv's and vcr's for a living

Maybe a bad connection to the audio head. A lot of problems are caused by the ribbon cable connector right near the pinch roller. When you opened it up and cleaned the audio head it might have moved the ribbon cable connection temporarily fixing the sound.
