My father has the same model Panasonic NV-J35 HQ. He bought it in 1990 for US$ 400. I replaced all the electrolyte capacitors in the AC power block and it still works. Great machine. It inspired me to buy its successor Panasonic NV-F65 HQ Hi-fi Stereo for myself. With it Great Times never end!
I've got a NV-F65 I had to learn how to retime the machine but it was fun apart from all the cut washers and circlips springing everywhere. Great machine but I can't get to the mode switch to clean it, due to the motor at the back covering it, I will have to revisit it. I think the J35 in this video is mono and the F65 is hi-fi sound.
This VCR occupies the Panasonic G Mechanism, very complex when it comes to Timing. However, Panasonic VCR's in this Era are known for their power supply failures due to leaking Caps. I've noticed when you are rewinding the tape, the counter drops out the count from time to time, very common in this mechanism. There is an easy fix, Take a cotton swab and dip it in alcohol and clean the audio/tracking head. That is the first head after the drum to your right. If you notice, when you insert the tape, two guides takes the tape from the right side, First guide is for the audio/tracking head and second one is for the capstan. Overtime, the tracking head gets dirty and won't be able to read the tracking info when FF or RW. Give it a good clean from the top to bottom and this will fix the issue. Give a good clean to all guides while you are at it. Thanks for the video. Love these VCR's, however I like to have Hi-Fi Stereo ones, have Sony 6 heads Hi=Fi 3 VCR's with me in perfect working order which I treasure everyday.
Ciao and thank you for your nice Video, which i like to share at Facebook and at Mewe, in 1990 i had an used Videorecorder from Panasonic, great Times back then.. many greetings from brunswick in Germany and please stay safe 🙃
Imformative and funny upload thanks! I think this is a G-Deck Panasonic which I've learnt how to retime having fixed my NV-F55 and NV-F65 which are both hi-fi sound.
Panasonic models that start with NV or AG are more commercial or professional grade, whereas models that start with PV are home or consumer grade. The one you have has a die cast chassis (that is why it is so heavy) and was very well made.
I´ve serviced plenty of these and still have some in my VHS collection. They are nice mono machines but there are some things worth being very cautious about. After all those years of service the complicated clutch mechanism can fail, as well as the mode selector switch. The sequential drive can be a pain to time and refurbish.

I had few Panasonic VCSs, one rather inexpensive model the reel load sensor must have failed, OMG it went completely mental, wouldn't slow down as the supply reel filled up, BANG, broke the tape at the end. Never plugged in that VCR again 😢

@kingshearer2 That's right!
I have never wanted to be a VCR so much until I saw this video :)
Great little mono machine, best for playing older tapes.

Thanks for the instructions. I will do so.
Вроде все верно, но не совсем, когда счетчик ленты не работает, то виноват прижимной ролик, а н голова синхроизации и аудио.

That's such a neat VCR.
У меня такой был с 93 года. Может где-то и сейчас валяется. Там пульт интересный, со сканером.
Those remind me of childhood. You were probably very young too back then and I'm sure they bring back memories.
Hi! This VCR was my first one in my childhood, so it's my favorite.
