    Hi from central Otago 👋 yeah I'm ordering this tomorrow morning 😂 I just hope the blasted courier takes better care of this box than the apiguard tubs I got from you guys a couple of weeks ago 😂 they must have dropped something heavy on them, I literally had to unfold the tubs 😳 but hey they didn't burst👍🤣 and they did a fantastic job of clearing up the chalkbrood I had too, but I think I might send you up a plastic tub to put them in for my next order😅, central Otago courier drivers are rough👍🤣 great video and timely, I've been talking to other beekeepers about this and they swear by it and also recommended I get it from you guys 👍👋

      There have been no reports of any signs of varroa resistance to OA from any of our many beekeeper clients in NZ. We still get the same excellent mite drop with OAE strips in our hives now, as we did 4 years ago. Some scientists say that they don’t believe it is possible for the mites to get resistant to OA.

  • @woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc

    A very good tutorial. I bought an instant vap about a month back. I discovered when I did alcohol washes after pulling supers that I had some colonies with fairly heavy might loads. I have stopped using the chemical mite treatments and formic acid or Thymol because of problems in the past with queens shutting down. Both products will work but if the temperature is too high you get into trouble. I use sticky boards and hit all the hives in a yard every four days until the boards show clean three days after treatment. Usually that's three to five times. The hives keep going business as usual and no queens have stopped laying. In fact they start laying more when the mites are getting cleaned out. I haven't seen any problems with the bees that could be blamed on the OA. The machine is expensive but cheap compared to what the other treatments cost or the cost of a lost colony. Where I live the bees will go broodless about the end of November and I'll hit them again two or three times. That will get them through until spring buildup. The instant vap is a game changer

If youd want a honey hive then youd have other hives out placed in the usual boxes.. my only issue would be disturbing them being inside a house.. if you played any music or movie loud or created vibrations with a vacuum or had a dog or kids.. you can tap on a fishtank because they cant go anywhere. Bees can one day decide to jump ship and head to the next guys harvest or join colonies ..

Bees antenna have an area called Johnstons organ, that converts sound stimuli to neural impulses. Honey bees produce many frequencies of vibration and sound from less than 10 to more than 1000 Hz. So far it has been shown that they can detect/hear sound frequencies up to about 500 Hz

    • @beequipnz6442
      @beequipnz6442 Рік тому

      Great question. The authorities haven’t commented... The NZ rules state:- Schedule 2 of the ACVM Regulations 2011 provides for an exemption from registration under the ACVM Act referred to as the ‘own use’ exemption. In a beekeeping context, the ‘own use’ exemption is commonly used when a beekeeper prepares and applies preparations containing generic substances, such as oxalic acid or formic acid, to their own hives for control of Varroa mites.

    • @beequipnz6442
      @beequipnz6442 Рік тому

      The strips are wet when soaked properly. But they shouldn’t be so wet that they dribble when picked up from the storage bin or rack. Each strip holds 23 grams of solution so there would be something wrong if it appeared dry. If the varroa mite levels are kept under control, bee mortality is very low when the wet strips are added.

    • @beequipnz6442

    How much OA is left in the strips when removed and how do they handle water absorption from the air?

    • @beequipnz6442
      @beequipnz6442 Рік тому

      Hello Daniel, good questions. A key point to remember is that honeybees maintain the brood nest at 54 to 60% humidity and the temperature stays close to 34°C. The bees are very fussy about this. If the strips are placed in the brood nest correctly, then they are not exposed to excess moisture in the atmosphere. It is not a problem. If the strip is not in the brood nest and is exposed to atmospheric conditions, it can absorb water. We haven’t measured exactly how much OA is left in the strip at 7 or 8 weeks but what we do know is that most of the useable OA has been dispensed in the hive at that point.
