Italy's Little-Known Gadgetbahns
Hello!
In this video I explore and review two Italian transit systems that I consider "gadgetbahn" candidates: the Perugia Minimetro and Bologna's Marconi Express.
A gadgetbahn is essentially an unconventional mode of transit whose purpose could be better fulfilled by a traditional bus, tram, or train.

It's a Maryland law that ANY train crossing a street, must give a warning HONK everytime. It's a safety thing. We don't even notice it anymore. But because the light rail runs very quietly..it can speak up on you in the noisy downtown corridor. That horn will get pedestrians to move very quickly. I know this first hand.

There’s no direct connection between st george and perth amboy due to low demand. If you notice the neighborhood is mostly single family homes which is why people choose to live there-to be as far away from people as possible 😂😂. Millions of people in this country and we all hate each other 😂😂. Most people living here all have cars. The only reason they’re using the train is because there’s no parking in the shity and the driving is miserable.

Where you are standing in Tottenville is exactly where the ferry used to be. The Perth Amboy end still exists, even though it isn't used. And about an hour walk from where you are in Tottenville is the southernmost point in the city and state of New York.

I wish you were born 80 years ago because you would have loved the less complicated, cleaner system. NYC wasted too much many over the years trying to make a better wheel and now need to tax us through congestion pricing in an attempt to make up for their failures. Lived in NYC my whole life. NYC Transit is so filthy because our culture is so filthy. The stations are Ugly in deed. I hope you don't become a victim of crime while doing your videos.

" come back in a few years and explore line 3 when it's open" . Don't hold your breath. The construction has encountered a huge problem : the Palais du Midi - Zuidpaleis (reverse that if you are Flemish) . See 7:31 If I remember correctly they encountered stability problems with the soil. Which they try to solve in ways the people living and working there don't like. By removing the Palais/Paleis for instance. This together with other problems is causing huge delays. I think they didn't even start constructing the northern part of the line.

I was driving an RV from California to Boston. I was on the lower level of the George Washington bridge. Oops. The RV was too tall. The Port authority was called to escort me back around to the upper level. Oh fun!! I got a special tour through their back way maintenance facility. They didn't appear happy, but i thought it was the best tourist side trip. The toll was $38 to drive an RV in upper Manhattan... ouch.

buses not running is pretty rare. I've used Z buses since the 80s and really like the Flash service. The advantage of taking the bus instead of driving is that on the bus you can read/do work and not add wear and tear from stop and go traffic on yourself or your car.

Love the video, you did an excellent job showing a good amount of things on the metro lines, but I have some points that should be looked at: 4:37 - I think the point you make here is pretty unfair, especially when you consider that Line 4 was 99% funded with public money and handed over to the private operator. The line appears to be in better shape than the public counterparts only because it opened in 2010, compared to Line 1 (1974), Line 2 (1991), and Line 3 (1979). Also, there is a lot of debate about the privatization of the lines. If anyone does a quick Google search, they will soon notice that Via Mobilidade offers an awful service when compared to CPTM. As I mentioned earlier, using Line 4 as an example to claim that privatization works is totally nonsensical when you consider the age of each line and the government investment. The government is acting very strangely regarding Via Mobilidade, and Tarcísio de Freitas (SP governor) is planning to give ALL of the lines to private operators. In the meantime, if you look at how the money is allocated to the operators, you'll see that (2): CPTM and Metro (public) transport 1.053 billion passengers and receive R$259.9 million, while ViaQuatro, ViaMobilidade 8,9, and ViaMobilidade 5 together transport 573.8 million passengers and receive R$2.306 billion, which is absolutely insane. They transport half and receive 10 times more, and that's the reason Line 4 looks so shiny-it gets all this money by itself. Line 4 receives R$932 million to transport 190.3 million passengers. One private line receives almost the same amount of money as 9 public LINES-yes, 9 lines-and that is pretty sad. Here are the links that prove what I said: 1- plamurbblog.wordpress.com/2024/01/27/viamobilidade-dois-anos-de-muitos-problemas-nas-linhas-8-diamante-e-9-esmeralda/ 2-tab.uol.com.br/noticias/redacao/2024/05/09/metro-e-cptm-perderam-86-de-repasses-do-bilhete-unico-apos-privatizacoes.htm#:~:text=Em%202023%2C%20o%20repasse%20para,R%24%202%2C3%20bilh%C3%B5es.&text=Os%20dados%20s%C3%A3o%20in%C3%A9ditos%20e,Lei%20de%20Acesso%20%C3%A0%20Informa%C3%A7%C3%A3o.

The Sheffield tram in the UK has a carpark, as does the Boston Green Line D & probably quite a few of the systems in Europe. if you live in a city where the tram is a primary form of transport a country where the countryside is car-oriented a Park & Ride with a tram line is actually quite a good thing, but, the line does have to go somewhere... I mean, in Japan or the former USSR there were no tram Park & Rides, but that was because there was a presumption that you came into the city by public transport, changing to the Tram usually at the Central-Station or at a Bus Station. it's a secondary network. the important thing, and something Baltimore misses, is that a tram should go to a lot of useful places (a mall may be a good place for people to go, a lot of people work there and use it for shopping, but you need to link it to housing where people live). once you made a useful Tram network with a carless eco-system for it's riders, if it also happens to have a carpark or two, say one or two of the outer stations, it will be a positive since the people who use it do not drive into the city/town which has the Tram-Network i.e.: it keeps cars out of the city where they cause the most problems. it is the same reason why it is good for a Metro to have a carpark somewhere on the system in each direction of travel.... to link those who cannot use Public Transport all the way onto Public Transport. PS. as for why the Baltimore TramLink is where it is? it's bad, but probably it's just they did it cheaply on an old industrial track alignment, maybe even the tracks are just being reused, my guess is all those industrial estates would have railway access in the old days, so the tracks were just in need of sprucing up... politician thinks, I have a network here for free it does not occur to him that this track is abandoned for a reason, people have no use going where-ever it goes... I guess, the good thing is, if they ever get to gentrify the old industrial zone, those carparks are the ideal place to construct big multi-story high density condominiums, effectively no knocking down anything, no nimbies to oppose you, no one will miss a carpark.
