The Transbay Tube opened for revenue service September 16, 1974. My dad and I were among the very first passengers to ride through the tube two days before it officially opened. I was 13 at that time. We rode out of the West Oakland Station, but back then, it was called the Oakland West Station. BART at that time operated Monday through Friday and did not operate on the weekends, but there were excursion trains running through the tube over that weekend prior to the opening, so we rode twice both ways through the tube. The trains ran between the Coliseum Station and the Montgomery Street Station. The Embarcadero Station, an infill station, was still under construction at that time and did not open until February 18, 1976, for MUNI and May 27, 1976, for BART. While I have ridden in them, I've always tried not to ride in the C1 and C2 cars since they were powered by the original Westinghouse motors once used by the A and B cars. They were ok back then since the motors would hum during acceleration and deceleration. On the C cars, they made a loud buzz rather than hum. The ADTranz motors had a much better sound that were applied to the A and B cars and were quieter. They had this shifting motion as the train accelerated and decelerated. The new Fleet of the Future cars, equipped with the ADTranz motors, I have yet to ride now that I live out of state.

Wow a childhood friend and I went on this just after they finished the tube we had to get on in Daly City that was the last stop then. The friend I went with passed away 6 months ago from cancer. Thinking about you Bob RIP my dear old friend.

The BART reminds me of the London Underground Deep level lines tbh. This does sound like the central line when its speeding theough the tunnels at speed!

So this platform was used for the yellow line before they moved yellow line trains to the complete opposite side of the platform... Damn who would've thought a change like that would've happened.
