Collapse Fears - Why It's Inevitable and Kind of Good
Certainly good observations, I really stopped caring about pop culture when I grew up. Otherwise it's just too childish and repetitive in my opinion.
It can be heard to pull away from, but once you do you realize how stupid it all is.
Leaving this comment here about your new pop culture video. Here's my own faintly structured thoughts: I think there's a lot of people who have "NPC" taste in media purely because they've never experienced the incredible pay-offs of investing effort into discovering better art. For some, they may not even realize there's a world outside the mainstream. On a related note, I really view curation as a muscle. Only through repetitions do you develop a strong ability to discover gratifying media from distant corners of the internet. Unfortunately, there's tons of people who have not developed this muscle at all. Now, in the Solar Sands video, I think there's an additional, more central component to his critique which I'm much more cynical of. It's his idea that pop culture is worse than ever before. I'd encourage anyone who believes this to go sift through some records at an antique store. The average fifty-year old album is junk. In my mind, it's really a combination of survivorship bias and nostalgia that lead people to think it was better "back in the good old days." That being said, the structures undergirding where (and where not) good art appears is constantly changing. That can begin to explain why top-charting music seems to legitimately be getting worse. As an aging music industry calcifies, increasingly all the great artists have moved to the fringes--tiny independent record labels and file-hosting sites like Soundcloud and Bandcamp. It creates the illusion that the culture is dying, when it's really not. So if I were to sum all of this up, I'd say our culture has become a slightly different flavor of what it's always been. Constant cycles of invention, collapse, and revival.
I kind of agree with what you're saying about pop culture always being crappy, but I do think there's some merit to the idea that it's even worse now. Well, at least I'd say it's reflective of a worse culture as a whole. Even if you account for survivorship bias, the movies and culture that have "survived" into the modern day (from previous decades) had more too them. At some level they rung more "true". I'm thinking movies like Wizard of Oz, Star Wars (the three original), old Disney movies (Bambi, Beauty and the Beast, etc.). Even the stuff that's considered "good" today really lacks any heart or semblance of heart. Music is a harder one for me to pinpoint or form any solid opinions on. I think because music is so much easier to create (especially nowadays) it's been way more effected by the bifurcation of media. The mainstream stuff is like it's always been because it's got all the money and industry behind it, but the alternative stuff has suffered. The "alternative musicians" aren't really trying as hard because they don't have to and because there's no point to trying. I don't really have the time to write out all my thoughts right now. Also, I didn't mean to disable the comments on my pop culture video. I was trying to disable "comment moderation" (because the auto moderation rules are ridiculous) and screwed up.
I don't think she left the left I think she left the Democratic Party, I think she's just an independent liberal now like Bernie
Yep.
This landslide election was a defeat, not so much of the dems, as the collectivist, with us or against us, conform to the group or we hate you, agreeing with us isn't enough, you have to talk just like us or we'll accuse you have saying nonexistent dog whistles, type culture that they created. Both parties are still very authoritarian, corrupt, and owned by the elites, and basically, lite fascism, but the mass psychosis that took hold of our culture and society has been eviscerated. It relied on the creation of the perception of itself as the norm, and majority, and ostracization of anyone who is an individual as weird different and not part of the group. THe reality, is the opposite, they are the radical fringe minority and we are the majority. Individuals make up the majority of this country, but those individuals will have to learn to create unity if they want to wield power over politicians such as is our right and duty.
Even if the fringe lost, the country, or most individuals, are still suffering from liberalism. The Overton window has just shifted so far that we think that most people's beliefs are "okay". In reality, you'd have to go back 100 years to find really good ideology among a large amount of Americans.
What is it they say that they went so far left they left all of us behind. Good luck with the channel.
Ha! You think the Democrats went far left? You have no idea what far left is, their problem is the opposite. They're not going far left, they're not going anywhere they want to do this stupid "keep the status quo" crap and no matter what you are liberal or conservative both agree that the status quo needs to change.
The moment they actually start going more "left" is the moment they will start to gain way more support, nobody's going to taste something like universal healthcare then wanna go back the days of begging people not to call the ambulance while heavily bleeding. Or go back to the days of spending an arm and a leg for pharmaceutical drugs essential for life. Until then they're the ones being left behind.
Yeah that's why Bernie was so popular with the same demographic trump picked up this time around. That's why the Harris campaign running to the center made them lose their base.
@@stupidduck3200The Democrats want universal healthcare, but they just haven't moved on it yet. The fact that it's a topic that's taken remotely seriously (especially on a federal level) is just a prime example of how far the Overton Window has shifted and our values have degenerated.
@@bb-jy7iuYep, Trump got a lot of people on board by promising them stuff the same way the left does. A lot of Trump supporters are a sort of "welfare but only for us" crowd. They aren't Conservatives like the kind we had in the 1800s.
There's so many misinformed things in this video I can't even fit all of them into one comment, you're meandering and weaving in and out of topics to just try to cover all the buzzwords with no solutions as usual. I don't know you, I don't really want to know you, I think you have a lot of misconceptions about how everything really works.
i haven't even watched the video yet, but if you're going to say this, you should be able to say exactly what and exactly why. This "you're wrong but I cant say how or why" reeks of collectivist leftists anti logic.
@@davidgreenwood6029 he called farther left like a guy "like Biden" there really isn't any much to say here. if you think Biden is farther left or Kamala for that matter then you will never believe that Trump is worse then Biden or Kamala. even if you hate the Left you have to recognize that the Left holds very little power int his country. Biden is more systemically a Liberal. same thing with Kamala. Most Leftists are anti-systematic. they don't like the system and probably many Leftists supported Trump to some degree of course Trump isn't the best case scenario for anyone even a Leftist. but a lot of leftists that don't follow Leftist circles tend to vote Trump since he's an authoritarian and many of these quote "Leftists" who aren't Libertarian Leftists but just Soviet tankies who defend Russia and oligarchs for that matter and even China to a definitive degree will usually support a guy like Trump. not all of them some of them don't support him for similar reasons the Libertarian Left-wing doesn't support Trump. but you have to admit this video is just poorly informed and misinformed at worse. since Biden and Kamala are not "Far Leftists"
I look at things in a way I don't think a lot of modern people do. For example, currently I'm getting most of my philosophy from James Burnham and John C. Calhoun. I've yet to really come up with solid terminology. What's something you think is misinformed?
@@LuciferMorningStar-t8uDespite some policy wavering, Harris and Biden's ideology ultimately comes from the book of equality. Might be using the words left and liberal too interchangeably, but ultimately they (along with Sanders, Chomsky, etc.) represent something that is very adverse to the principles of true Conservativism (Burnham, Calhoun, etc.) Even Trump is liberal when push comes to shove. He's got a healthy right wing streak though.
You gotta do your homework, bro. Russell has been stacking up some very serious allegations over the decades, which he avoids by finding himself in increasingly smaller and increasingly reactionary groups. Ana has been whining for years about TYT failing and not making any money. Your two examples haven't been "pushed out by the left", whatever that even means.

She wasn't really left to begin with she was just self serving . How can a liberal REFUSE to understand that punching down vulnerable minorities is not a good look?
@@adrianonline69 So basically the point I made in the video was right.
She didn’t change her beliefs, she just quit wearing their jersey. She is no less progressive. Listen to her for 2 minutes and you’ll know that she is the same her. She just doesn’t support the craziest stuff and doesn’t want to be labeled with the crazies. She also isn’t joining MAGA for sure. She did not move to the right. I don’t even understand how anyone could think she has turned right wing. Ask her. Just ask her.
@@dlkjr88 But many people will label her as right wing now. Sadly, the Overton Window has shifted so far that people like her comprise much of the "right".
@@andrewtc95 This is pretty much what I mean. It's akin to the way the US rates itself to have the lowest level of corruption. It's because you've drunk the Koolaid.
Indeed, the pendulum and the people are two seperate factors. Sure the pendulum swings based of of people's political beliefs, but their conviction don't just morph into something else. So if there are new values being added to one "side", it's not going to subtract from those who don't recognize those values and place them on the opposite side of everyone who chose to adapt these politics. However, it's often used by political commentators as an excuse to do just that, e.g., grifting. One example of such a person is Dave Rubin, who was part of the TYT network but "over time" shifted further and further away from his original stand points, and who's been made a laughing stock out of by content creators who've dug through the archives. When it comes to politicians, people often get miscontrued by their kabuki-theatre performances which are meant to polarize and distract the average voter from what really matters; what these politicians are actually voting for. And we fall for it, time and time again. It's all about prioritizing what's relevant to your life quality instead of allowing yourself to be caught up in something that affects a marginality of certain groups, none of which includes yourself or anyone you know. Should I give a f*** about it? Should they give a f*** about it? Are there other, more important things I should give a f*** about?
@@Koperviking The leaders aren't the problem. They are only as corrupt as we allow them to be. Most people today want corrupt leaders. The people are the problem.
@@andrewtc95 That's what my previous comment was meant to touch upon, «... instead of allowing yourself to be caught up in something...». So when you see people who are voting against their best interests, it indicates more than just one problem with the system. Unless it's to their benefit, the people do not wish to see their country fall into the hands of a corrupt politician. It's a quagmire, trying to figure this stuff out, but you could try to look at the flow of information and socio-economic diversity to try and dissect what negatively (or positively) affected the lives of the general population through the outcome of an election, as well as the events that led up to it. For me, the benefit of hailing from Norway enables me to identify these factors without much effort, but for you guys it's an uphill battle. In a corrupt political system, priority #1 is to make sure it stays that way no matter what. So, naturally, having the tools to uncover corruption goes against the interests of said corrupt system.
Basement boy talking abt a woman who has been losing her mind slowly the last few years. The right can have her.
Also, remind me who's banning books and controlling women's bodies again? History teaches us it's never the good guys banning books
Does it though? Also, early Americans were very Conservative towards women. I think the Roman Republic was too. Seems to be a prerequisite for making a good civilization. Socrates certainly thought so.
Ana wasn't "pushed out", don't you pay attention to anything but the TV show they produce for you? TYT has been hurting for money and got some new sponsors, investigate who they are
She wasn't really ever left, neither is Cenk. The Overton window is so skewed right in corporatist America that even neo-lib 'free-market capitalists' can pretend they are. Hustlers' gonna hustle.
In what way are TYT not left? Last I checked they supported things like gender equality, white guilt, anti colonialism, government hand outs, etc. The fact that they can be considered right in any way shows how skewed we are.
@@andrewtc95 She says things like homeless people want to be homeless lol.

Few politicians want to do away with the majority of welfare programs and social security, or return power to the states, or put fathers back in charge of the household, etc. The general feeling you get from the American people is even worse. There's such a a sentiment towards equality and guilt on behalf of the successful. The relationship world is heavily slanted towards women and everyone is fine with it. Even Trump supporters are generally pro-welfare and labor laws b.s. - they just want it to favor them and not immigrants. They don't have the spirit of the Founders or great thinkers like Calhoun.

You talk like a politician. You've said Ana is leaving the left because it's gone too far left, about 10 times, without identifying the specific thing that makes go it "too far left." You asert it as bad without identifying the bad. Therefore, your target audience is people who already agree with you, but you're not really saying anything. Meanwhile, Kamala Harris, a former the top cop officer of California, wants to build a border wall, tough on immigration, pro-war, pro-police, all signs that it's a shift to the right. Make it make sense.
The word 'just' does an incredible amount of heavy lifting. The bible, specifically the old testament as plainly read, will offend most people with a modern moral compass (Christians included) AND there's also a lack of rational reasons to believe in the supernatural claims of the Abrahamic religions. The text of the bible is full of bad moral ideas and bad ideas about how reality operates, and frankly it's not really a problem to point out the former when morality is so often lifted up as a selling point for the abrahamic god.
The morality of the old testament in many ways is FAR better than the mushy morals we have today which are abysmal based around equality and the rule of the weak. But that's beside the point. Even if your modern sensibilities were offered that alone wouldn't make the Bible any less true. This was the whole point of my video. Nature is offensive. The weak and the unfit die and the strong reproduce. Runts in a litter often die off because someone has to get the short end of the stick. Too much compassion is a weakness and will get you killed or hold you back. None of these are comfortable truths, but they are nonetheless true.
@@andrewtc95 The lack of morality in the old testament isn't proof of the lack of truth in the old testament, but it IS proof of the lack of morality in the abrahamic god, even if we were to concede the truth of the bible (which, as we both know, we have no reason to do). I don't see a need to respond further. Your love for hierarchy outweighs your lip-service to rationality. Social Darwinism was the means by which a racist population rationalized its knee-jerk reaction to the idea that humans from non-industrial civilizations aren't meaningfully different from anyone else. It's based on a rudimentary misunderstanding of evolution. Humans did not rise to the top of the evolutionary landscape through means of force, cruelty, and superiority, but through means of social cohesion and the sharing of strategies.
I'd say we evolved with a mix of co-operation and use of force. In more recent history, the 13 states co-operates with each other and subjugated the natives and Africans. Depends on who you're dealing with. Also, morality doesn't exist. Our modern sensibilities largely come from our abundance, ease of living and our ability to export the ugly parts of our reality so we don't have to deal with them. Most of us are no more moral than a kid who simply hasn't had to make any difficult decisions. Off course, it's easy for us to have some pretense of morality.
I hope that's not your mom's basement.

Most atheists are atheists because of a lack of any real evidence for any God. Making up stuff about us atheists is not 'reading between the lines' my friend.
Not in my experience. Most atheist will defend their position with decent evidence, but if you push them you'll find they only really abandoned religion for emotional reasons. They just think atheism better accommodates their liberal values. That isn't to say anything negative about all atheists. Like I said, if you dig deep enough you'll find some really original thinkers who are atheist. But the garden variety atheist isn't so different from the garden variety Christian. Both religion and atheism can be the opium of the weak/liberal masses.
@@andrewtc95 As there is no good evidence for any God or anything supernatural many people today stop believing in a God and become atheists. It really is that simple.
Many people but not most. I really don't think most people think about things rationally or look for truth. The only people I see complaining about overpopulation are those from the right (especially in reference to ecofascism). Idk where you derived this as an issue the left complains about. I see the left complain more about resource management with there being enough resources for everyone but "greedy capitalists" horde it for themselves or people generally over consuming on goods, luxuries etc hence a focus on a strict "equality" in terms of split of goods. I'm pretty sure Peter Kropotkin's work already addressed that mutual co-operation is part of nature too and it isn't just "compete and losers die". Not sure where you're seeing the left talk about exterminating people at the end of the video? Is that in reference to the recent Trump assassination or something else?
I was just arguing with a leftist not too long ago about population control. Generally they seem to be worried about global warming, pollution and feeding everyone. Feel like there are some other issues, but I can't think of them right now. I'm pretty sure the streamer Destiny (a far leftist) has talked about population control, but that's only from here say as I don't listen to him. Co-operation and competition aren't mutually exclusive. If a farmer and blacksmith co-operate it's because there's mutual gain to be had. You could even say, in a way, the relationship becomes an abstraction of the tribe - therefore they are able to work together to compete for scarce resources better than some other groups. It's still ultimately competition.
@@andrewtc95 Alright. I don't listen to Destiny either but I wouldn't say the concerns about global warming, pollution and feeding everyone come from fears of overpopulation. I tend to see them attribute it to capitalism as a whole, corporations and systematic issues but if you've debated a leftist on it then I can't say much to that. I'm not saying co-operation or competition are mutually exclusive but social Darwinism, from my understanding, certainly doesn't account for it much. The implicit assumption here is that tribes are aware they're competing with other tribes which isn't always true (and it assumes resources are indeed scarce, which is its own discussio). It's mutual survival, not inherently competition

It’s interesting because critical thinking is encouraged in college but not the rest of society. And even then there’s only so much you can think about that’s acceptable within the walls of universities.
So much of modern society and morality is built on B.S. so it makes sense that people aren't taught to think critically. In my experience, you'll actually be shamed for thinking outside the box.
@@andrewtc95 as someone who has been shamed for thinking for myself I agree.

american economy. the reason social programs are underfunded, is because they are underfunded. everyone wants insurance, and the brain is inherently lazy. if everything is made too lazy, it will definitely be a problem.
People who have a limited understanding of AI/ML, yet very strong opinions of it, always seem to miss the trajectory, the exponential improvement of capabilities. They say things like ”AI can only produce low quality code” or ”AI can only produce boiler plate stuff we copy paste”. See where it was just 5 years ago. Try to understand where we are heading.
I hope it gets better as I think it would be a great tool, but right now I just don't see it. Sounds too good to be true.
Thank you. I was literally saying the same. We're just gonna end up with dumber people because people are gonna be lazier
People didn't get smarter when google and other searches appeared People won't get smarter when AI will become widespread What you can do is to assume that it is possible to know everything and learn everyday piece by piece. Those who do that have my respect
brothers, it is the perfect time to start learning: don't fall in the mind-trap thinking you missed the boat as the first ship has not even left the docks. You can't go wrong with python for Generative UI/Machine learning skills.
Even if the specific language you learn becomes obsolete you'll have gained intellectual growth and experience in problem solving. That's the stuff that really matters.
A lot of things that look stupid from the independent developer's perspective turn out to be startlingly necessary once you encounter the hell of integrating with an enterprise ecosystem infested with stupid. I'm entirely in agreement with you that stupid people, specifically stupid developers, are the real threat to our jobs because they spend more time selling the systems they design than designing them. Therefore, those systems are what get sold instead of those that are actually focused on and carefully engineered. Subsequently, you get clients who want you to integrate with the stupid systems they bought because they weren't sufficient for the job that needed done, but the technical and financial investment has already been made. My recommendation to get around this would be to find a core of smart people who agree with how you like to build things and find problems in your community to solve with greenfield solutions as a starting point for your client base. You're starting in the right place, I think, by putting your thoughts out on a longer form social media platform. It's a better place to attract attention spans than Twitter, for example. Don't fear the stupid. Just lend your intelligence to the solutions in progress.
ai ist gonna make it easier to program we'll be able to just type in what we want and it can generate what we wanted or if its not exactly it we'd still be able to ask for certain adjustments but yeah if bad people use it to get hacking programs and all it'll be a nightmare
I think of AI as 3 things: 1. A toy for those who don't really care 2. An advanced copy paste tool for the stupid 3. An advanced lookup tool for the smart
I think of current AI as only one thing: A SUPER cool tool to create LSD acid art, because frankly, that's the ONLY thing that current AI is good at. It absolutely sucks at math, physics, science, logic or anything else which requires either coherency or consistency. It's absolutely great at hallucinating videos & images if you're on acid & you really don't care how things relate to each other.
The problem I see it's it gonna be the same way as the ''free internet'' of late 90's, taken over by evil corporations. They advert it as a giant opportunity for humanity, while they are designing it to monitor individuals.
It's kind of apples and oranges though. Whether or not it's used for mass surveillance is a problem with the federal government. Not with the technology.
80% of programming jobs utterly braindead. If LLM context window grows to cover a reasonably-sided codebase, it will be able to make your frontend React app. There are many good engineers who genuinely love the art of programming working in such positions, for the simple reason that you need money to buy food and not die. Even if you don't care that those people are out of a job, and even if you work in a complex position that LLM has no hope of filling, the job market shrinking 5x is still terrible for you, because - again - there are extremely overqualified people working these positions who will now compete with you for the remaining "real jobs". "Real jobs" aren't 100% safe either - whether or not the LLM can do your job is besides the point, the real concern is whether or not some manager *believes* that the LLM can do your job, and LLMs are infamously good at pretending to be good at things.
100%. Even if the LLM generates ”worse” code, how will you compete with it being free? Who’s going to pay you $150k to build a web app like every one else, when the LLM can do it for free?
No matter what AI does there will still be jobs. They'll be different and people will have to adjust and change, but that's life. The economy is bad right now not because of AI but because of our stupid idealistic government (voted for by stupid people). Started in the 1930s with FDR and the welfare state.
@@andrewtc95 "voted for by stupid people" I'm not exactly blown away by your massive intellect.
@@archvaldor You don't need to have a massive intellect. You just need to not be stupid. Or just not an emotional voter.
My experience using AI - it's fantastic until it starts just making sht up as it goes. Human potential of fucking up is infinite, but AI can come up with infinite ways of infinitely fucking up.

To all the people that don’t understand his take is. C-level decision makers can be really stupid. Specially to technical decisions, HOWEVER they are pushing to reducing costs (by cutting resources and overloading the ones that are left trying to keep same throughput) No AI, afaik, can debug an application. The US tech economy is kinda crazy too tbh, 250k+ for people joining the area? lol
The way I see it is: if you're worried about AI taking your job, you should reconsider your talent within that field
Or the brain of the CEOs, artists specifically have it a bit rough rn cuz of those idiots.
Then i hope you already started pursuing something else!
To some extent I agree, but I also think there's just always going to be a sort of "lower class" in any given field - people who probably just need to keep a bigger rainy day fund because they're more disposable by nature. They just need to always be prepared to train for paradigm changes. The bigger problem that makes life unnecessarily hard for people like this is government inference which subsidize the parasite class at the true lower class's expense.
@@andrewtc95 We have that underbelly and always have...people who have been "mediocre" at their jobs will always be that "lower class" so to speak because they provide less value than the specialists or 10x dev. I think the political discussion of government warrants an entirely different discussion, because you're not wrong about that.
@@WiggleWizard The lower class are always going to have to go with the flow so to speak. If industries change, they have to retrain. If industries are taken out entirely, they have to find new ones. That's just the natural order. The problem comes in when people try to change things through politics, which is why voting needs to be restricted. Like I said, the lower class is being unnecessarily hurt right now but not by AI or greedy rich corporations. By the parasite class - a class that shouldn't even exist but does because of government subsidies. But unfortunately everyone blames the wrong factors.
To your last point about people calling for the ban of AI, it is important to understand the dynamics within the society. ChatGPT, Mid-journey and Stable Diffusion were released a few years ago, were they cool stuff? Yes. Did they cause entire industries to fire workers? Also yes. The problem was never the tech, it has always been the "stupid" rich people that own the tech. They want to build a system where they can put in as little input to production as possible while demanding as much as possible for their products. In a society where everyone is out of a job due to AI replacing everyone and no one can purchase anything, do you see how quickly society would collapse? The ironic thing is that these tools were fed data/content you and I produce. If people did not have to worry about if they could survive if any form of tech advancement was made, do you really think they'd be opposed to it?
Rich people can be dumb emotional thinkers. As long as they're allowed to fail and don't get a bail out the market can work like it's supposed to. For the people call for a ban on AI, they're just modern day luddites. The world has always been better for technological advances. AI is just another technological advance.
@@andrewtc95 you're still not getting it, it has nothing to do with being stuck in the past and everything to do with having a future. You still operate under this magical thinking that wealthy people, the people holding most of the power, also follow the same rules as you and I, if they fail, they WILL get bailed out because they understand full well that the individualistic, self made man is a fallacy that is only meant for the poors.
