Does Your Child Need Surgery for Toe Walking? Dr. Jarman Explains
Toe Walking can be a concern for many parents, but how do you know if your child needs surgery? Join Dr. Mikkel Jarman, a leading pediatric foot and ankle specialist, as he explains the criteria used to determine whether surgical intervention is necessary for toe walking in children.
In this insightful video, Dr. Jarman outlines the key factors he considers: the age of the child, the results of the Silfverskiold test, and the effectiveness of conservative care. He explains why children over the age of 7-8 years are more likely to require surgery and how a clinical assessment like the Silfverskiold test helps diagnose the underlying causes of toe walking. Dr. Jarman also discusses the importance of proper conservative care and why it sometimes fails to correct the condition.
With his extensive experience and clear communication, Dr. Jarman provides parents with valuable information to help them make informed decisions about their child's foot health.
If you’re concerned about your child's toe walking, Dr. Jarman and his team at Pediatric Foot & Ankle are here to provide expert guidance and care.

    Hello doctor.. I am now 25 years old, when I was 9 years old I had a fracture in my left leg. I think during that time my Achilles tendon muscles shrank due to lack of exercise and caused my walking to be a little tiptoe. and for my posture now it seems like I have scoliosis. previously I have never had any surgery. do you have any suggestions? thank you

    Cerebral palsy had this done 17yrs ago, I had just turned 12. Biggest mistake..even my mom regreted agreeing to it, my stamina got worse, severe pain, my balance never recovered either and tendinitis to this day . Worst part is standing up from being seated. I hear oh but you'd be wheelchair bound otherwise, honestly that'd be preferable at this rate and almost likely because of the surgery at this rate

    After watching this, I'm slightly confused and frustrated. My 2 year old has been on a workup for CP since she was 6 months, and earlier this year, we discovered she has metatarsus adductus. Ortho and PM&R said no bracing needed, it should resolve itself. Now she runs (and mine you, she's been running since she started walking at 1, so this isn't something related to being new to running) with her legs swinging out, and I'm noticing more and more her legs are rotating inward from her hips. So I was told no treatment necessary for MTA, and now I hear that we basically missed our window for optimal response to treatment, plus she appears to have another condition, femoral anteversion, on top of it. She's complaining of pain more and more, too, which makes me feel so bad for her. Now I'm considering a second opinion, but it's so hard to get in anywhere, and I do love her neurologist and would hate to have to switch clinics and make communication a bit harder for the different doctors in different clinics.

    My almost 2 year old son has pronated feet with his ankles collapsing inwards when he walks and he cannot jump with both feet off the ground yet. He does have a little bit of arch when his feet is off of the ground and resting but when he puts it on the ground it is flat. Is this something I should be concerned about and should I bring him to a pediatric podiatrist or orthopedic for check up? Is there anything they can do for him this young? Also should I put arch support pads in his shoes?

    I had several of these on the bottom of one of my feet when I was a child. They were large, deep-rooted, and would make it awkward/sometimes painful to walk. I was told by my doctor at the time to try wrapping them in duct tape. After a while of them not going away, I was about to have them frozen off, but I chickened out at the appointment. So I was instructed to continue using duct tape for a while, and to my surprise, it ended up working. One day the warts began to rapidly shrink, then disappear.

    i had serious plantar warts on my left big toe from 2017 to 2019 when i was 14-16 years old. later around 2018 when i paid attention to them and tried treating them with home and homeopathic remedies, they spread to my fingers and other toes. doctors had told me to either get them surgically removed or through the freezing method. i didn’t want either. FINALLY what worked for me was OREGANO OIL! this essential oil was amazing for getting rid of my warts and within a few weeks of using it regularly, my toes were back to being normal. phew! hope this helps anyone struggling with those disgusting warts 🥴 and ure not alone !

    Im curious how you would conduct this procedure with a toddler aged 3? Chances are they'll be scared and not sit still, what would the protocol be to remove the ingrown toe nails because they're feet are in constant pain so you have no choice.

    • @PediatricFootAnkle
      @PediatricFootAnkle Місяць тому

      Depending on the severity of the ingrown and considering any previous treatment received, would determine which procedure would be appropriate. Medical staff is very good at distraction for younger patients when necessary; that and calm reassuring parents. Regarding pain, the pinch from the numbing agent is what the patient feels. Post procedure, (next day) there can be some discomfort easily addressed with something over the counter for pain relief. Thanks for watching our video.

    • @PediatricFootAnkle
      @PediatricFootAnkle 13 днів тому

      Thank you for your question. Our staff is experienced in assisting with all procedures on children of all ages. If a nail removal is indicated, especially if an infection is present, the procedure can be seemless. Yes, children can be anxious, however, a calm reassuring parent is essential. The pinch of the numbing agent is what is felt and lasts only seconds. The procedure itself is not felt. Let us know if you have any other questions and thanks for watching our video.

    This is very similar to my situation. I toe walked well into my teens, but I always had the ability to walk flat, I just consistently reverted back because it was more comfortable. The doctors warned my mother that I would need this surgery if I didn't get a handle on it. Thankfully I have been able to maintain my flat walking, but I still deal with a lot of tightness and pain. I'm in my late thirties and I still have to think about each step I take.

    I'm 40, and have been walking on my toes my whole life. I can walk flat footed, but it does not feel natural. I ran track and was actually really fast because I I used my legs more like springs. I was also heavily into martial arts and developed great balance on my toes. When I wear normal shoes I tend to walk flat footed but I don't like it and wear flip flops or go barefoot whenever possible. If it helps I am on the spectrum so I have a few odd habits. My son who is almost 20 walks normally unless he's running or stressed and then walks on his toes.

      As an alternative to over the counter topicals, a podiatrist has other options of treatment available. Size, number and depth would determine the most effective treatment for the virus. Let us know if you have any questions. Thanks for watching our video.

    i'm 14, i had this done in september . it was a lot of pain and i was in a wheelchair for about 4 weeks because i couldn't put any pressure on my legs. i was out of school for a while and i had to wear special leg braces to help me balance and walk i got them in october and wore them until January. i was able to walk before then but my doctor suggested keeping them for a bit longer i did physical therapy until April(?) i still have physical therapy stretches i have to do at home but overall 9/10 and i recommend:)

      A virtual consult would be required first. The link to make that request is noted below. And yes, families have traveled here to Arizona to have their child's toe walking surgically corrected. The video in the link also explains how that process takes place. In the meantime, please let us know if you have any further questions by contacting our office directly. pediatricfootankle.com/traveling-out-of-state-pediatric-podiatry-care/#contact

    I have one that I’ve had for 2 years. It started healing but I kept accidentally stubbing my toe and now it hurts when even the tiniest bit of pressure it put on it. I wanna tell my parents but I’m scared it’ll hurt

      Our patients tell us the only discomfort during treatment they feel is a slight, brief pinch from the numbing medication. They don't feel the treatment itself. A little pressure but not pain. Thanks for watching our video.

    I used the following: 1. Dollar Store disposable nail file 4 pack and got 16 uses out of it. (Never using same side twice 2. 'Compound W' after wet sanding and thoroughly drying. 3. DUCT tape, Yes Duct Tape over the wart and Compund treated area. After 1-2 weeks, it peeled off and was attached to the Duct Tape

      It sounds like what you are describing is weakness in the leg muscles and difficulty lifting the foot, causing toe walking, likely secondary to your spine issue. This is generally treated with bracing. Thank you for watching our video.

      I have provided a link that may help you prevent recurring ingrowns. You mention the "whole" nail was cut. In our clinic, when indicated, we will remove the whole nail. I think that's what you are referring to. Factors that can contribute to an ingrown nail developing are improper toenail trimming, toe injuries, tight-fitting shoes, and of course genetics. Review the link and let us know if you have any questions. Thank you for watching our video. pediatricfootankle.com/foot-conditions/ingrown-toenails/

      For children between the ages of one and four, the Surestep SMO (supramalleolar orthosis) is an excellent choice to provide the necessary support and stability while still allowing for normal foot development. A prescription is necessary for this device. The links below may be helpful regarding the orthosis and finding a provider where you live for an evaluation of your daughter's feet. Please contact us directly with any other questions. And thanks for watching our video. surestep.net/products/ www.apma.org pediatricfootankle.com/contact-directions/

    I'm 45 and I did this until I was around 5 or 6 years old and I have no idea why. I don't even remember when or how I switched to walking normally but I know I never saw a doctor for it. I have ADHD but otherwise I don't have any conditions I'm aware of, and my ADHD is fairly mild now (though it was rather severe in elementary and middle school). My memories of this are very strange. I didn't give it any thought until I was with my biological dad one day (who I didn't see very often) and he told me to stop walking like a girl. From then on I became very self conscious about it and I think this may be the main reason I stopped doing it. Before that I had no idea that what I was doing was usual.
