    Its a common problem for various arcade boards that the reset circuit will often reset the battery backup to the RAM chips which is a big no no. How can you add isolation so that the reset circuit doesn't reset the battery backup to the RAM chips?

    You take a rare, hard to find, 49 way Williams joystick that seems to only be used for 2 games, and then convert it to a 8/4/2 way joystick that are all over the planet and easy to find? Send me all of your Sinistar joysticks.

    • @BradRaedel
      @BradRaedel 17 днів тому

      Many Williams games use the optical stick that aren't 49-Way and there was no prior solution to get them. The control panel is very specific for this exact layout with the large bearing. (2-Way Optical: Some Joust, Motorace USA - 8-Way Optical: Bubbles, Splat, Inferno). These sticks were not from Sinistar, but Arch Rivals. Also, I'm making a drop-in custom board and the stick can easily be de-converted back to 49-Way without issue. I also make/sell a 304 Stainless Shaft that can be paired with a Red/Blue/Yellow Balltop depending on the game.

I appreciate your reply and thank you for the insight!

    On the molex header pins, what are the black ramp fittings used for and why do they have the black ramp fittings?

    • @mecha2001
      @mecha2001 19 днів тому

      I was told they would withstand greater heat. considering Williams pinball adopted black plugs for their GI power starting with Twilight Zone (not the header side) and that alleviated those burning out there's probably a psychology behind it lol. Brad said he doesn't use those so I don't know if it's the lighting or if they were actually used on the sound board. I find the friction locks on those to be softer and they're way easier to manage taking the plugs in and out. beyond that I condone replacement of all the high current power plugs/headers on these games. the original IDC stuff is fine for the control and video wiring. I wish I still enjoyed working on these games, but maybe one day it will come back.

    The #8 dipswitch in the boot start up sequence must jump the game code into game Test Diagnostics mode. I'm not sure what this is called? when the game code is "jumped" into game test diagnostics mode. Some games use JEDEC files which I'm not sure if the ROM files that has the game code are considered JEDEC files or what you call the ROM data files if they aren't JEDEC files?

    So you're using an IR Lamp to activate all of the IR photo-transistors on the Optical Interrupter Board? I have never seen an IR Lamp on a electronic technicians work bench they must be not common to find IR lamps?

    • @earlywilliamselectronics-a4799
      @earlywilliamselectronics-a4799 Місяць тому

      Good Question! Technically, the lamp is UV (Ultraviolet - 100 to 400nm). The phototransistors are designed to work in the IR (Infrared - 700 to 1100nm) spectrum. Since the tolerance on the lamp is not great and the tolerance on the phototransistors isn't great, there is enough light in the overlap shared wavelength to activate them. I primarily use the lamp to cure UV Paint/Mask and Adhesives/Resin/Epoxy.

    • @waynegram8907
      @waynegram8907 Місяць тому

      @@earlywilliamselectronics-a4799 ok thanks because not all IR transmitters circuits and IR receivers circuits use the SAME IR Frequencies also. Even if you have an IR light it might be transmitting a different IR Frequency than what the IR receiver was set at, so you have to MATCH up the IR Frequencies for it to work correctly. So I thought the UV Lamp was on a different IR frequency compared to the IR Photo Transistors IR Frequency. I would have never thought of using a UV lamp to activate IR photo Transistors since UV is on a totally different frequency spectrum which I'm surprised it even worked.

    • @earlywilliamselectronics-a4799
      @earlywilliamselectronics-a4799 Місяць тому

      The original ones are made of plastic. The holes get elongated over time, the material gets heavily scratched from dust/debris accumulating and moving back and forth which blocks the light. The design was not very robust, but then again they weren't designed to last for 40 years!

    Why do some arcade boards don't use soft start? the soft starting circuit is only a capacitor?

    • @BradRaedel
      @BradRaedel Місяць тому

      The capacitor in the 'Soft Start' is one part of an RC (Resistor/Capacitor) time constant. It provides a delay after the power is applied before taking the CPU (6809e in this case) out of reset mode. This ensures that all of the IC's on the board have clean and stable power before the CPU starts executing instructions. There is also some circuits that monitor the voltage levels (regulated +12 and +5) and will force a reset on the CPU if they get too low. The original linear power supply has a circuit that will 'crowbar' the power if it goes too high.

    • @waynegram8907
      @waynegram8907 Місяць тому

      @@BradRaedel The Soft Start RC time constant has to be BEFORE the watchdog timer trips to take the CPU out of reset mode. The Soft Start RC circuit much "RESET" the watchdog timer circuit?

    • @waynegram8907
      @waynegram8907 Місяць тому

      @@BradRaedel The Power Supply "Sensing circuit" on various pinball and arcade games causes problems because the wiring harness/connector pins cause resistance/voltage drop between the header pins to the connector pins. I'm not sure what this type of resistance is called? but there is a voltage drop that occurs from the header pin to the connector pins so it will drop the sensing voltage which trips the sensing threshold comparator to send a FORCED reset signal to the CPU

    • @BradRaedel
      @BradRaedel Місяць тому

      @@waynegram8907 The counters are also held in reset until the time constant runs out. Therefore, no watchdog since the 'MR'(Master Reset). Everything on the board comes out of reset at the same time. This allows synchronization and prevents collisions on the address/data busses.

    • @BradRaedel
      @BradRaedel Місяць тому

      @@waynegram8907 Williams arcade games don't use remote sensing for the linear power supplies. They decided to use heavier gauge wire with less voltage-drop and preset the values a bit higher (~5.1vdc regulated). at the source. The same reset circuit is used for both soft-start and low voltage monitoring on Williams MPU's.

    What causes pinball games Lamp Ghosting issues and Problems?

    • @BradRaedel
      @BradRaedel 3 місяці тому

      I'm not really a pinball guy, but most likely due to timing issues as well as the transistors used to drive the original incandescent bulbs. They don't perform the same with LED's. I think they have come out with some specialized LED's that overcome the issue without having to change drivers.

    • @waynegram8907

    Hey, it works on hardware, awesome! Had to think outside the box a little bit for this one. The game would pause immediately upon hitting the player 1 button to start the game, so there's an extra check in the code to see if the byte at RAM address $9800 is above $A0. $80 is player death and is also used at the very beginning of every player turn. So once that byte goes above $80, then it's possible to pause the game. In attract mode, this byte never goes above $38 or so, that way we don't pause the game during the high score screen or game instructions. The routine to erase the text on screen was not working initially as well but there was enough room to copy over the same routine the game uses to erase text, but this time it was slightly modified to erase the new "Paused" string. Keep it up with these videos, Brad!

    Can you make a video lesson on why switch matrix and lamp matrix need to use Diodes because of the strobe signal gets confused with the diodes are shorted. When the Diodes are shorted in one of the ROW the strobe is applied to each column one by one but not understanding if a diode is short why the strobe signal gets confused and errors happen on the matrix tests. When a switch is OPEN the bad diode is shorted the strobe signal doesn't get confused but when a switch is CLOSE the bad diode is shorted the strobe signal gets confused and errors happen in the matrix. I just don't understand what the purpose is for the diode because a GOOD diode allows the strobe signal to flow from column to row/return as well as a BAD diode allows the strobe signal to flow from column to row/return so there is no difference at all logically it doesn't make sense why the matrix will cause errors. The strobe signal looks like on the oscilloscope like a PWM signal or clock signal not sure what is so special about a strobe signal or how its different from a clock signal or PWM.
