Cessy-en-Bois HO scale Model Railway
A look at our HO scale SNCF exhibition layout Cessy-en-Bois in HO scale and some train movements and shunting in the yard.
Set in the South West of France in 1980 Cessy is a small shunting layout that we brought as a complete layout and we are now taking it out to exhibitions.

Upgraded Hornby Austerity on test on Bottom Works Sidings exhibition layout
Переглядів 1,9 тис.3 роки тому
A short showing an upgraded Hornby Austerity (or J94) test running on my exhibition layout Bottom Works Sidings - this was the first time the loco had been run on a proper layout and I’m really happy with the results. Although not based on a particular prototype the loco is inspired by many working in collieries and coking plants in the early 1970’s. My layout represents sidings serving such an...
Upgrading an old brake van and making it a track cleaner!
Переглядів 2,3 тис.3 роки тому
In this video I take one old Mainline, Dapol or Hornby LMS brake van and fit a Lanarkshire Modelling Supplies track cleaner kit, then detail, repaint and weather the body. The model can now run on the layout during an exhibition and clean the track without looking out of place among the surrounding trains or scenery, which is much more than can be said for most track cleaners. The kit can be br...
SLW DCC Sound Class 24 D5021 Shunts Oly’s Layout

A quick video of Chris’s Sutton Locomotive Works class 24 fitted with DCC sound arriving at and shunting the coal yard on Oly’s home based shelf layout, which has recently had a few changes made. The train draws up clear of the point work and having been given permission to enter the yard draws forward, before propelling back to run round and drop off the wagons, before shunting the brake van i...
Removing Hornby factory weathering using car polish
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
The factory weathering Hornby applied to their models in the 2000’s looks pretty rubbish to us, so using some car polish I removed most of the weathering from this Super Detail Class 31 to bring the model up to a nice sheen. Here’s a quick video of the process I followed to achieve this - there are plenty of other methods available but this one suits me! Once I’d cleaned the weathering off this...

Weathering Accurascale PTA/JUA wagons
Nice layout do you have the track plan to show , Thanks
You could tape a nail to the other end of your radius stick
What components were used for the track ?? It looks good - maybe a touch more weathering would blend it in even better.
Your layout is Superb. The detail and particularly weathering of the vehicles are of the highest standard. I have watched your video many times.
I have a Sutton's Workshop 25 on order with sound and stay alive. Nice layout. Is it a shelf? I'm just starting a 12'x18" shelf layout.
Fantastic weathering on the coal truck and hopper… realistic sounds and moving speeds… I could almost smell the diesel fumes…👏🏻👏🏻
Brilliant
Could this approach be used for building larger table style baseboards for4 oval type layouts? I am planning a baseboard build 2440mm x 1550mm (2440mm x 1220mm + 2440mm x 330mm). I want it to have legs and be as light as possible in case I need to move it in the house. Was thinking 12mm plywood on top and 90mm x 22mm timber for the framing but is it also possible to use ply like you have or inadvisable? I like the holes drilled for lightening the structure. You haven't covered things like legs for the baseboards or how you pinned the structure? I was always of the belief you should never pin into the edges of plywood only through the top as the ply delaminates. How do you avoid this?
Nice weathering.
When you made the curved sections, did you use the 6mm ply to get it to bend.... and as you said it was rather challenging to curve it, would you use a thinner play next time ? I was thinking I can get 3.5mm plywood and maybe use 2 layers with a large helping of epoxy resin and loads of clamps.... Your hindsight would be helpful.
THE DANGERS OF SOLENOID MECHANISMS ON PECO POINTS ! Solenoid point motors on Peco points sooner rather than later, hammer the points resulting in the little hair spring breaking & rendering the point useless. The solution is to use proper motor drive mechanisms such as Turtle or Fulgurex that actually require the Peco hair spring to be removed. And these mechanisms come with switches (The Fulgurex mechanism comes with two free switches & two blank spaces to accept two more) One is obviously used to control the Frog, and the second to allow you to interlock the point in real life fashion with the Signalling. These Mechanisms are still only around £10 each when you buy a case of 20 by mail order, direct from Fulgurex in Lusanne Switzerland. Fulgurex have a website but DO NOT deal online ! Their range includes mainly very exclusive brass handmade limited editions of locos & rolling stock for Connoisseurs.
Amazing. Is the sound from SLW too?
Stunning loco and scenery. That grass looks amazing. You know I'm going to ask how you make that grass :)

Superb modelling! A compact layout that calls for a croissant at breakfast! WELL DONE! Pete
Great looking project look forward to seeing this develop, love the proper block trains.
Would love to see more of the layout
Hi! I'm really impressed! I'm from France and I can tell you that what you've done here is very close to reality! A good source of inspiration! Thx for the video!
The concrete around the goods shed base is truly amazing.
Incredible layout, superbly operated.
So much detail, so rustic and so life like. Brilliant, hats off
Marvellous!
You guys are killing me here - I'm now scouring eBay for some European H0 models!
I’ve got a list of links to useful sites for odd detailing bits if you succumb!
Stunning. Such skill. Helpful to see the off-scene/fiddle yard as well. Thank you for sharing.
Another great project and G'day from OZ
Show much attention to detail. i am in awe. well done. hi from NZ
Hello Chris I discovered your channel 2 days ago and am now up to Chapter 6. Very impressive point work in No. 5 and the wiring looks so organised!. I'm just embarking on a new build in a log cabin - and was interested to see the metal trestles you use to support the boards. Can you tell me what make they are please? Best wishes Peter
Thanks Peter, very kind and apologies it’s been so long since the last update If you search for ‘telescopic metal trestles’ on eBay they should come up, Draper make them but I use the cheaper unbranded ones which just require bolting together yourself (an easy job)
@@otcmmodelling Many thanks!
Lol I am a professional so not forgiven lol But in all seriousness love the layout it's turn out well and even as a professional I still find that free hand is a skill to be had in itself nothing wrong with that
Very nicely weathered! What paints and techniques do you use?
Very nice, simple by so well done. I love the grasses. Hi from NZ
Very nice
Hello OTCM chaps. I am really stuggling to find a contact e-mail for you, here or even on you Wordpress blog. Could you provide as I'd like to send an event invitation.
What a superb and realistic model railway. I felt as though I was actually there in real life! Just wonderful.
No mention on fitting the roller.
Hi Chris, just come across your site, just been watching your first part of your point/track laying video, actually very concise and I’am at the point, pardon the pun! to start laying the points, only just bit unsure in that no mention of installing plastic insulations at the ‘V’ are they not required? Just subscribed, Eddie.🤓
Hey Eddie, I didn’t use plastic rail joiners, and just left a gap - can’t remember why now to be honest! You need a break of some nature behind the V, so either plastic rail joiners or a cut in the rail do the job 👍
@@otcmmodelling cheers Chris for your reply. 🤓
When is next update
Not too sure yet. Real life currently getting in the way of model train progress but I’ll do one as soon as there is something to cover.
Have you got round to put update @@otcmmodelling
Cool layout
Looks really good. My God all those wires 🫣. Looking forward to seeing how it pans out 👍
What a great layout. Love how run down it looks as a scene. The weathering is brilliant on the loco and wagons aswell. Really good video thanks 👌
Very good video with some valuable tips 👍🏻
Hi 👋🏻 What a great era and location this is to model 😊 I’m 66 now and lived in Manchester so I had plenty of visits to this location before it was demolished and disappeared for ever. A Sunday afternoon visit to Wath was always with a visit on my motorbike 👍🏻 Without being rude you look a little young to remember this era so why are you modelling it? Just curious that’s all 😊 I’m sure I’ll enjoy following this one 👍🏻 Cheers Stevie 😀
Thanks for your comments Stevie, always been drawn to the area and the trains, although I’m not 100 % sure why! Pleased the layout is bringing back some memories for you, hopefully as it progresses it’ll capture the atmosphere of the area as realistically as I can interpret it from photos!
Looking great with a lot of interesting movements 👍🏻 I spent many a day train spotting at Wath sheds and around the Sheffield area in the late 70s on my CB Honda 250 👍🏻 So this layout build has a great memories for me 😊
Really enjoyed that buddy 👍🏻
Good morning buddy. Just came across your channel 👍🏻 This is really interesting to me as it’s my era of train spotting in the late 70s and throughout the 80s. I lived in Manchester and traveled across to Yorkshire watching trains especially the Tommys working coal and mixed freight trains 😊 I stoped taking numbers when tops came in re numbering locos 😫 I’m 66 now and still love watching trains. Great video and I’ll subscribe to watch your progress 👍🏻 Cheers Stevie
Could i ask your scenic boards what are the measurements of the back and front of the boards thanks
Front boards are 4ft long and roughly 21 inches deep (so they fit through the back gate flat!) while the rear boards are 6ft x 2ft
My father was a time served carpenter all of his life and whilst he used hand tools I'm sure he wouldn't have scoffed at you with your electric saw and straight edge. The most important aspect is your approach to the job, not the tool that you're using. I'll bet that Dad would love to have had access to some of the modern power tools when he was out on a cold building site in the '60s. 🙂
Very nice but the sound seems out of synch with the wheels, should be four chuffs per revolution.
Eye protection is always prudent when using power tools. Finished product looks good!
Very nice kayiur😊
Are you related to the dude from Everard Juntion?
Nope, just have a voice that sounds vaguely the same!
