On the bench: A 242c missing a ton of bits and pieces...let's bring 'er back to life!
I found this 242c at an antiques show, and got it for $5. Problem is it was missing a whole lotta stuff. However, it was in very good shape, so worth a gamble. I've got the parts, let's get it to making light again!

Not many folks know about this heater. This is built on a 118a fount, and originally came with a ceramic heater element. Most of these have been broken over the years, and this one has an aftermarket stainless steel element. It works great and throws heat a long way. Great for those chilly evenings on the patio!

First I want to apologize about the framing of the headcam...it wasn't pointed down enough. Still got lots of good footage and didn't want to throw it away, so you'll just have to look past that bit. What we're doing here is the prep work to be able to paint the top of the stove. I go through my prep steps, and painting so we can end up with a stabilized end product. This stove was never going to be a beauty queen, but we can stop it from getting any worse. Sure it's going to have a finish that won't be factory smooth, BUT it will be stable for a very long time to come.

So there's been a lot of work going on behind the scenes with the cabin stove, and there'll be videos coming up showing that process. This is one of the first large pieces of the stove that have gone into the "soup". This process uses electricity and washing soda to remove rust and paint with virtually no effort, and best of all, no nasty chemicals to smell/burn up your fingers/and worst of all...

    Just picked up a 242B unfortunately the air tube in the font was broken. I take it that it’s a parts lantern now. Or is there some way it can still be fired that I’ve not thought about. Great show keep them coming. Thanks

      Air tube, as in the one that goes up vertically from the pump? If so, yeah, that is pretty hazardous and will shoot fuel right out of the pump. 242 founts are not too hard to come by, so I'd just replace the fount.

    I just got my first two 1965 and 1969 Coleman milspecs. I tore them down, citric acid soaked all brass parts before running brushes through all of them. I also ran bore brushes through the air tubes and whatnot. Founts are squeaky clean. The fuel air tubes are both able to be taken apart so I took them completely apart, soaked and scrubbed the varnish off then I reassembled them. Both lanterns slurp and stutter, they are bright until a big knock in the fount then they spit flames for a split second. It’s like something is clogged and releasing pressure quickly then lets it build up then releases, causing them to spit, sputter and pulse. I’m at a loss as I’ve went through everything 4 times now.

      I'd try removing the generator and see how fuel comes out of the fount. If that flows freely, you may need to replace the generator.

      Yes, you sure can. I usually only do that with generators I can service as they will clog sooner. Since there are no more gens being made and they are kinda $$, I stick with coleman fuel.

    I'm soon going to start working on a CQ lamp dated May 19, 1919. I've found a filler cap that utilizes a Schrader valve allowing the use of bicycle pump. Any thoughts on this? What pressure would you pump it to? I've refurbished a few Coleman lanterns. The latest being a 200A. This will be my first lamp project.

    • @gasunderpressure9131
      @gasunderpressure9131 22 години тому

      Yep, it will run without the coil, but it will surge as you describe. You can use bronze wool wrapped around the cleaning needle rod to provide some resistance to the fuel backflow and that should help with the surging.

    Excellent video! I recently acquired a 1965 german made Petromax 829/500 rapid with a military metal case and i like it. The rapid torch is fun to use. the lantern was working already but i had parts kit with it so i overhauled it. Petromax are so bright,almost need to wear sunglasses 🤣 They work well once you get to know them,the pump system is the main annoying thing,they need lots of pump even with a full tank of fuel but they work. The tank is quite big to pressurize too i must say. I ordered a valve adapter to replace the pump so will be much easier to pressurize. I will get a compact bike pump that i can store in the lantern case. Imagine how awesome a petromax would be with a Coleman style pump/checkvalve.

    • @gasunderpressure9131
      @gasunderpressure9131 5 місяців тому

      That's challenging on a couple of fronts. First, to get it out, you'll need to chip out all of the graphite packing inside the valve body. That'll release the tip cleaner. Then you'll have to find a tip cleaner that has the graphite packing on it. Old Coleman Parts may have what you need. The other way to go at it is to pull the entire valve out of the fount and replace the whole valve assembly with one from a 200a. They're the same part. Again, OCP may have what you need, just depends how much you want to keep original.

      So you bring up a really interesting point. For most appliances built in the 1920s and 30s, the year is shown as a single digit, which is what I'm seeing. Around 1941 they went to double digit numbers for the year. C's were made '41-'50. So maybe it's 1938 instead of 1928? That puts it in the 242b years of manufacture; maybe the collar was swapped at one point? I need to look at a reference of valves/burners to see if it's a B or a C.
