I love Coleman and all gas pressured appliances. The designs are robust and built to last...if you maintain them. Here we go through all of the appliances and find out what makes them tick, or why they aren't ticking. Repairing these old trusty items is a lot of fun, and with care, they can be handed down for generations.

On the Bench: Coleman CQ/Lancaster lanterns troubleshooting
This lamptern frankie has been a mainstay of the back porch for the past year. I discovered a bit of an air leak the last time I went to pump it up, so let's check it out!

On The Bench: Are your mantles Thorium? Wanna know?
Переглядів 25314 днів тому
In this video we check out a bunch of different mantles from various manufacturers all over the world and see what they're made out of. I'm using a Radiacode 102 gamma ray spectrometer to provide definitive proof that we're looking at Thorium.

I found this 242c at an antiques show, and got it for $5. Problem is it was missing a whole lotta stuff. However, it was in very good shape, so worth a gamble. I've got the parts, let's get it to making light again!

Baby, it's cold outside...let's light up a heater! I don't do much with propane on this channel, but this is a really great strong performer. Definitely nice to have on the porch for a chilly winter evening.

I usually get away to do some camping a few times a year. Robert has been gracious enough to invite me out to his camp, along with a few of his friends. We all collect and pitch in on chores around the property, and it just makes for a great getaway with a bunch of lantern nerds.
Fixed: Model 16 complete fuel valve pull and generator service

Tried to run the Model 16 on the back porch last night and it was plugged up. Time to do the complete valve pull and see what's going on. This also includes a bonus generator service. In this video I talk about a great funnel pitcher I've been using that I found at Amazon. If you want one, please use this afilliate link: amzn.to/41WVI14 I get a small commission, which I put right back into the ...
Light Up: Coleman Hotray parabolic heater
Переглядів 40811 місяців тому
Not many folks know about this heater. This is built on a 118a fount, and originally came with a ceramic heater element. Most of these have been broken over the years, and this one has an aftermarket stainless steel element. It works great and throws heat a long way. Great for those chilly evenings on the patio!

Light Up: Coleman 521 military stove
Переглядів 399Рік тому
First I want to apologize about the framing of the headcam...it wasn't pointed down enough. Still got lots of good footage and didn't want to throw it away, so you'll just have to look past that bit. It'll be better next time! Anyway, this is a Coleman 521 stove that was used in the military. I picked it up a few weeks back at a trade days show, and it was in such good shape I figured it'd be a...
On the bench: Coleman Air O Gas starts getting paint
Переглядів 151Рік тому
What we're doing here is the prep work to be able to paint the top of the stove. I go through my prep steps, and painting so we can end up with a stabilized end product. This stove was never going to be a beauty queen, but we can stop it from getting any worse. Sure it's going to have a finish that won't be factory smooth, BUT it will be stable for a very long time to come.
On The Bench: Coleman Cabin stove secondary burner lever rehab
Переглядів 258Рік тому
Sticking with the headcam stuff for a while, we go through the auxilliary burner control lever that is bent out of shape. As per usual, a lot of Coleman issues can be fixed with a hammer, and this one is no differen!

So in the previous video you may have been a bit confused to see me cleaning parts that I haven't taken off before. Well, this video should solve the mystery! The footage got misplaced, but hey, it's all back now and you can get to see the stove come apart and get made ready to throw in the big electrolysis tank.

Good job Mike. What’s the next challenge?
Super bright. Thanks for sharing with us ❤
Thankyou for the video
Great information. I’ve had a couple 200A’s that have been in my family since I was a kid. They are mine now and with some attention they both work pretty well. The generator on the older 1968 probably needs some attention, as you have shown here, since it pulses a little. Just a couple weeks ago I found a really nice 1982 200A for $8 bucks at the local thrift store. I grabbed it immediately. It had fuel in it, so I pumped it up and looked for leaks, and found none. Even the mantle was good. Threw a match in it and it lit perfectly and runs perfectly, like it was new. Score! These old lanterns are fun and bring me back to years gone by. Now on the hunt for a 236. I don’t need a 236, but now I want one, because as you say they are so easy to work on.
Soo Cool . Im getting one .. 👍👍
Those 242 lanterns are well engineered and run strong. God Bless
Good info, God Bless
God Bless, I burn in my mantles with a torch also. Nice Lamp.
2:24 was that a fart?...😮
Tenho um lampião Coleman antigo tem interesse em comprar
👍👍
Could you test a readylight compared to other thorium mantles?
Sure, but I'm not sure what a readylight is?
To help me with the loss of my mom I found a ql 327 with the same month and year as my mom. It looked sad when I opened the package. Two days of cleaning and fixing it looks nice and works even better! Its now one hundred years old and has a repaired q99, we have match lite ignition! I think its good for another hundred years.🎉
Very interesting.. am I the only one that won't put silkys on my lanterns? I just save them. Use the new ones for testing..but they still work and why ruin them?
I will put silkies on, but only if the lantern is running right. Usually that can be checked without a mantle. Silkies really do look nice when trying to go for that period look, like on a slant or 242. They do have a special color to them too, a bit more green tinged than the Peerless Thorium mantles. I've got a few stashed now, so I can burn a few. Most useless mantle is one that never gets used. :)
Would be a good time to share a tip on safety, when you are done working with mantles thorium or yitrium wash your hands. How many times have we eaten a sandwich for lunch while prepping camp for night.
For sure! Also, just generally a good idea to wash your hands in camp, amirite?
THANKYOU!
Good info, thanks. I'd like to know more about your fancy tester. I want one too
It's a Radiacode 102
Good afternoon. Very interesting video. Please take the camera off your head. I'm still dizzy...
Haha, yeah, I get that. Sometimes the head cam is a bit much. I should put a warning to "take your dramamine now!" at the front of the video. Good point though. That camera does have stabilization and I don't have that turned on right now. I'm sure that'd help quite a bit.
@@gasunderpressure9131 I like to see people in videos. The hands only people are fine, put putting yourself into the shot makes it personal. I really enjoined your videos more when they had two cameras. On the other hand you have the best, most learned and authentic GPA videos on UA-cam.
Good to see you back buddy, interesting video and good information. But I have to agree about head cam lol.keep them coming buddy.
@@joseph011558 I appreciate the feedback! Main reason for the single shot in this video is because Camera 2 was focused on the phone screen providing that live readout in the upper corner. Future vids will be back to the traditional 2 camera setup.
@@gasunderpressure9131 Thanks. I really enjoy what yopu do and learn a lot.
Anymore videos in the pipelines buddy?
@@pauldeary Perfect timing! I'm working on one this weekend and it'll be up Monday morning.
That’s great, looking forward to it buddy. Bit cooler for you now lol. Move to Scotland never to hot 😂
Just picked up a 242B unfortunately the air tube in the font was broken. I take it that it’s a parts lantern now. Or is there some way it can still be fired that I’ve not thought about. Great show keep them coming. Thanks
Air tube, as in the one that goes up vertically from the pump? If so, yeah, that is pretty hazardous and will shoot fuel right out of the pump. 242 founts are not too hard to come by, so I'd just replace the fount.
Thanks buddy, quite hard to get a 242b in the uk. But will keep an eye on eBay lol. When’s the next video not seen you in a while, hope you are well my friend.
I just got my first two 1965 and 1969 Coleman milspecs. I tore them down, citric acid soaked all brass parts before running brushes through all of them. I also ran bore brushes through the air tubes and whatnot. Founts are squeaky clean. The fuel air tubes are both able to be taken apart so I took them completely apart, soaked and scrubbed the varnish off then I reassembled them. Both lanterns slurp and stutter, they are bright until a big knock in the fount then they spit flames for a split second. It’s like something is clogged and releasing pressure quickly then lets it build up then releases, causing them to spit, sputter and pulse. I’m at a loss as I’ve went through everything 4 times now.
I'd try removing the generator and see how fuel comes out of the fount. If that flows freely, you may need to replace the generator.
Can you use unleaded fuel ?
Yes, you sure can. I usually only do that with generators I can service as they will clog sooner. Since there are no more gens being made and they are kinda $$, I stick with coleman fuel.
I have often wondered about this, old school mantles, new non radioactive, powerhouse vs standard, thanks for the video.
You should check out my latest video, it's all about which mantles have Thorium and which don't.
just made an offer on one on ebay yesterday, it's shipping from Canada this week
i wanna see the finished product , please
I just picked one up and love it❤
I use the peerless 24a’s in my 236 & 237 , it bet it was huge in a 242!
Why the electrolytic bath is sandblast, evaporust?
Electrolytic does not remove any metal, only rust. Evaporust for something this size would be very expensive.
I'm soon going to start working on a CQ lamp dated May 19, 1919. I've found a filler cap that utilizes a Schrader valve allowing the use of bicycle pump. Any thoughts on this? What pressure would you pump it to? I've refurbished a few Coleman lanterns. The latest being a 200A. This will be my first lamp project.
I've got several caps like that. I use a tiny battery powered air compressor to pump them up. Makes them very easy to run.
My 1952 runs now. Thank you
@@rikarson2098 so glad to hear that! Enjoy!
Nice 👍
so i messed up my spring in the generator trying to get it out to clean it......asked about a suitable replacement.....im impatient.....so i put it all back together without the spring....figured what the hell see if it will work or not...n how bout that it works w out the spring....i have a small surge thing but i can deal w that...its burning HOT HOT now....like it should......
Yep, it will run without the coil, but it will surge as you describe. You can use bronze wool wrapped around the cleaning needle rod to provide some resistance to the fuel backflow and that should help with the surging.
is there a suitable replacement generator spring for the 457 g.....thanks Jeff

My neighbor is selling one hes up in years he wants 100 he hasnt ran it in 50 yrs he says is it worth 100?
I just bought one for $25, so $100 seems a bit much. All depends how bad you want it. :)
Go Sleebus go!
What is the name of the lamp and which brand is it? Thank you in advance
I just found a beautiful all brass tank for one of these, now I just need to keep my eyes open for the stove 😅
You're a great interviewer. No interrupting of your guests and a nice, fun and relaxed style. Well Done!
Thanks, I appreciate that!
So cool!
FOA my opinion, if you get a 275a AND check or replace the Schrader, it’s a bright awesome lantern. Becoming quite collectible. I love these Canadian jewels though, pick up any I can afford. Super video 🎉
I played that music venue 2010 or 11 ,big fun, enjoyed the video..
Just got into the Peak series of Coleman products, do you have any in your collection? And good God man, install a mini split in your work shop. Texas is hot...
Yep, I've got some Peak stoves. For sure I need a mini-split!!
Spectacular job Brother thank you for sharing I got 1 at a yard sale with pump for $15 it was dated 1924 it was fired up yep unfired
Thank's Bro !
Just fired mine up today, had not been lit for 40 plus years. New mantle, oil the leather pump and fired right up. Love these old lanterns. So old said leaded gasoline. Good times.
Great Video! Thanks for sharing.
Don't get that on the aluminum name tag, remove it from the lamp.
Can you leave a link to the guy that makes the generators please. Much appreciate
