I have real history with Deep Purple, a major influence on me very early in my career and still. In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head were as good as any band’s three consecutive albums, ever. I saw that iteration of the band perform in 1972 and they were brilliant. I’m sorry to say David Coverdale does nothing for me after the sublime Ian Gillan. In 2001 I would have the great pleasure of recording the music for a concert DVD, Perihelion, with the ‘mark II’ band but with Steve Morse on guitar. It was a great experience to work with the musicians who’d shaped my life decades prior. During Highway Star, I lost my professional cool, stepping away from the console and dancing from one end of the remote truck to the other. I’m sure my much younger crew found that amusing.

I was there and got tear gassed when it wafted up into the stands, it was horrible. Zephyr was epic, and yes Candy calmed the crowd. Her voice was incredible. Spent many Friday and Saturday nights at The Family Dog. Man everything was so cheap! We could always afford great music.

Deep Purple MK4 had a brilliant tour of the US. They were writing songs for their next album. The songs ended up on solo albums. The rest of the tour wasn't very good. Press in England gave them a hard time and they broke up after the Liverpool concert. My personal opinion is solos were overdone and Coverdale must have felt isolated.

Deep Purple. Come taste the band is one of my favourite albums. Still like it today. Tommy was himself and not trying to mimic anyone. He brought a freshness to Purple. The tour to Australia was OK. Indonesia and Japan not great. The US tour was brilliant and Tommy played really well. Tour to England was a disaster and the critics were a bit cruel. In subsequent years some live releases featuring Tommy have been released. They were great shows and more concerts from US tour should be released so we can all appreciate Tommy Bolin contribution to Deep Purple MK4.

He played well on the US tour did Tommy Bolin. I liked Deep Purple with Coverdale. Its a pity they broke up after the Liverpool concert.

1:08 he’s got lasers coming out his guitar. Genius use of the echoplex. I always liked how he incorporated it in his playing for quick bursts and then go back to playing smoking licks.

Tommy Bolin is the Man!!

Laid back. Tommy was the type of player that when he was on, he was unparalleled- way charismatic guy whose playing was an amalgam of a lot of unusual influences. When the planets were misaligned, he could be awful, but Hendrix was the same way. My time machine wish is that Tommy would have dialed it back from 10 to 2. Precious man. I was 16 years old and was in row 13 for last show.

Touch , tone and taste were just some of my favorite things about Tommy's guitar playing. Passion,fire and funk were the others.
