The THREE KEYS to Natural Irish Pronunciation
Переглядів 1,7 тис.3 місяці тому
This is a video I've wanted to make for a while, and this time it's one which doesn't just apply to Munster Irish, the things I talk about in this are applicable to every dialect. I used examples from each of the major dialects, but there were more from Galway, since it's much easier to find Galway speakers in Ros na Rún. If you want to learn more about this kind of stuff, a lot of the informat...

Go raibh míle míle maith agat leis seo, is breá liomsa an tsraith seo!
An tsraith ar fad feicthe anois, bead ag tnúth go mór leis an gcéad fhíseán eile!
Go raibh míle maith agat!
Ba mhaith liom na liricí iomlána "Óró 'sé do bheatha abhaile" a fheiceáil ar do fhreastalaí Minecraft. Agus píopaí uilleann ollmhóra (ag imirt) ! B'fhéidir dealbh ollmhór de Brian Bóraimhe freisin. Is ansin a bheidh Tigh na nGael ann :D
Tá an ceart ar fad agat, caithfimíd rud i bhfad níos gaelaí a dhéanamh sa todhchaí!
Ceist agam: I've noticed in both your speech and the talk of some Gaeilg Uladh speakers (in both cases thanks to accurate subtitles) that féin is often softened even when there isn't a grammatical reason for it and it is not written fhéin/ḟéin. To my ear this sounds like séimhiú rather than the typical gliding and omission of vernacular speech; am I wrong? Is it a dialect thing? GRMA as na fotheidil.
That's a great question, you're absolutely right that I say "féin" as "héin" (or sometimes "héinig"). This actually happens in every major dialect, and it's much less common to hear people saying "féin" with an f. You often see it written as "fhéin", but note that it's not exactly lenition (séimhiú) as this spelling would imply - because 'fh' would be silent.
Is fuath liom an nether. Tá sé ródheacair i gcónaí!
is fíor dhuit! go háirithe agus an oiread san rudaí nua ann ná fuil ar eolas agam
All of your content is very helpful! Gaelainn na Mumhan learners need every little resource we can find!
Thanks, I'm glad it's helping you!

I have to say your videos are exceptional (less so the Minecraft ones…). As far as Irish UA-camrs go, the vast majority pronounce everything wrong. An Loingseach is great but rambles (which I love for different reasons). If you start making regular videos, I think you can be THE Irish language UA-camr within a year. GRMA from Sasana
Físeán iontach! More please!!
Grma! More to come definitely, let me know if there's anything specific you want to see
@@an_spideog That’s great to hear that more is coming. I don’t have any particular ideas, but I do think pronunciation should be your focus. There are many channels that can teach the technicalities of grammar, but a tiny handful that understand pronunciation.
Is breá liom an smaoineamh seo! Míle buíochas arís as an fotheideal Ghaeilge! 😃🥹👏

N'fheadar a mbeidh tú ag baint úsáide as redstone ar chor ar bith? Acmhainn iontach atá ann ach ní rabhas riamh in ann dul i ngleic leis. Tionscadal maith a bheadh ann meaisín nó feirm éigin a dhéanamh, seans
Bead! sa chéad cheann eile is dóigh liom
Grma! ❤ A lán pointe mhaith anseo...
fáilte!
Go raibh maith agat!!

GRMA don físeán seo! You mentioning that the L in Gael is broad at 9:38 was an eye opener. I’ve always wondered why there’s difference in spelling Gael vs. Gaeil given that e usually marks a slender consonant.
I'm really glad to hear that it helped!
🌚🙏😘🤤👍
👌
4:01 - that's the first really clear, natural, recognisable slender R I've heard, something definitely clicked for me there. Great video to help me codify some of what I was noticing so that textbook Irish doesn't come out of my mouth when speaking to actual people xD edit: I'd love anything Gaeilg Uladh!
I'm really happy it helped! I'm not really the best person for Ulster Irish, but I'm trying to bully some of my friends to make some videos with it, so we'll see how that goes!

is munster the most common irish dialect?
Not specifically, it's hard to pick out one dialect as the most common, they're all fairly even
what's the history for these consonant groups forming these vowel sounds? how did the irish decide that 'adh' should sound like 'eye'?
I don't have an in-depth knowledge of the historical developments, but as I understand it there was no 'decision' of that sort. Originally broad dh represented a dental fricative like in the word "the" in english, then over time it merged with broad gh which was a velar fricative, and then over time velar fricatives between vowels were lost but changed the quality of the vowel.
It's curious to note that many of these same pronunciation rules are almost exactly the same in English. Most learners have never had the similarities and differences demonstrated to them. It really helps for a language learner to know a bit about their own L1 Grammar and pronunciation.
Yeah definitely!
Woah! It's odd to say, but I was SO HAPPY when I heard you pronounce the consonants correctly! As a newbie to learning Irish, it's really disheartening that the vast majority of the channels teaching it do such a poor job. I don't know any other language that has such an issue. SO glad I decided to chance it and click on this one, and can't wait to view more! Go raibh maith agat! ^o^
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it
An Spideog, these Khan Academy style videos are very instructive. While you may not have the wealth of linguistic knowledge of An Loingseach, you're a lot less prone to waffle/tangents and never fail to make unambiguous, succinct points. Please, please, please keep going, you have a natural ability to teach. We can never have enough people like you stressing the correct slender and broad R pronunciation and the difference between English and Gaelic phonemes.

Níor mhaith liom cur isteach ar limistéar Bhainne, bail ó dhia air

what's your opinion on the Clo Gaelach spelling?
Do you mean the characters themselves? or the spelling that was in use before the reform - with the characters? I quite like the characters aesthetically, I think they're very nice, especially the ponc séimhithe which is very unique. In terms of the spelling itself, I don't actually mind a lot of the decisions of the spelling reform, it hides etymological information - but often I'm fine with that as long as the pronunciation is still clear. e.g. urdhubhadh -> urú, you lose the connection between this word and dubh, but the spelling is still clear and convenient so it doesn't bother me too much.
@@an_spideog a little bit of both. I was reading an article about how kind of abrupt the change was along with the general spelling reforms I'm surprised by how many books we're published in the old script
@@RoyalKnightVIII yeah there's a lot of them, it's definitely useful to be able to read it
