    Hopefully, you get some of those figs to ripen, Conor 🤞. The snails have gone to town on your lime tree by the looks of it 😱 Yeah, mislabelled plants are the bane of my existence. I really hope the I-258 I sent you is correct, it did come from Vinny originally, so it should be right 🤞. I never got around to repotting mine this year, so they have been held back.

    Hey Conor, I really enjoyed this tour of all of your figs, I have accumulated 5 fig trees this year so it's a new obsession of mine! I have 1 my Aunt gave me which I'm not sure of the variety, I brought 3 as mixed varieties in the garden centre sale but they weren't labelled and I have 1 Brown Turkey 😊 seeing all of your varieties makes me want to add to my collection!

      @GemInTheGarden Thanks! Glad to hear the obsession is spreading 😅 Ah nice! Often, even the labelled ones in garden centres incorrect, which is why I am mainly getting mine through other collectors on FB. But brown Turkey is a solid producer so I hope it fruits for you soon 🙌

  • @PeterEntwistle
    @PeterEntwistle 13 днів тому

    It was great to see them all, Conor. Looks like they've done pretty well for the first year. Hopefully next year you might start to get a few fruits from them 🤞. The Perretta/LDA fig looked very tasty! I want to propagate another LDA so that I can trail it out at my allotment. I plan to do a similar experiment on my allotment although it will be heavily centred around breba-producing figs to see which produce the best tasting fruit and quantity in my location. I might also put an RDB in the ground just to see if it might ever produce main crop outside. It's also great to hear I'm not the only one that uses spreadsheets to keep track of varieties of plants lol 😂. Although to be fair I haven't updated it with the new varieties that I've managed to get to root this year.

      Thanks Peter. Yeah they've done their job for year one, just putting up the main stem, and hopefully next year they'll kick into production. Will be interesting to see your breba trial at your allotment! And I'd definitely plant a RdB in the case of a year with a warm long summer. 🌿

    Your fig trees are looking nice and healthy, Conor. Hopefully, there is enough time for some of them to develop 🤞. I noticed my in-ground Brown Turkey has started putting out a lot of main crop figs, but there's no chance they will ripen, I think it's a late main crop producer anyway, so likely not possible without a head start or greenhouse.

    With tomatoes you pick out the side shoot to limit the amount of tomatoes a plant is ripening and improve quality. If you limited the number of figs your plants are growing would it speed up the ripening and improve quality in the same way?

    • @hopeitgrows2892
      @hopeitgrows2892 Місяць тому

      Yeah definitely! Especially in cooler climates, with container plants. Next year when these trees branch out, I will probably limit the number of figs each plant puts on, so that they put their energy in to those figs, and ripen up in time.

    I grew Redhaven peaches for a couple of years in large imitation wine barrels. They might be 40 gal size. They were the best peaches I've ever had and did not get any die back from the winters. As soon as I put them in the ground they got canker and leaf curl and when they got to big to cover all the critters would go after them too. I planted some apricots and already have canker problems. Growing any stone fruit has its challenges here in MA USA. People don't realize how much work it takes to get produce to the market and then here in the states they must be aesthetically pleasing to the eye without blemishes so that people will buy them. So they produce varieties that can take shipping without damage and usually have no flavor. Now I want to put a peach in my greenhouse in a container again. I have figs too and this year seems to be a good year for figs in my location. Looking forward to them ripening. That peach tree is really producing and you thinned them too.

    You must be so proud of your allotment I think parsnips are best harvested after a frost, the frost brings out more sweetness. If you're picking yours soon you can peel, chop and freeze them to replicate the frost sweetening, cook them from frozen. Noticed a few tomato plants growing out of my mums compost bin today, I think they be supermarket tomatoes that have seeded, we've potted them and see how they'll turn out. I'm sure you can grow the seeds from supermarket tomatoes and you get a better quality of tomato than you bought.
