Tactical Breathing Technique | Square Breathing | Box Breathing | Polyvagal Breathing
U.S. Navy SEALs use this technique (also called Square or Box Breathing) to stay calm and focused during high-stakes operations. Like other deliberate breathing interventions, this one helps regulate the amygdala, activates the prefrontal cortex to help you focus and make good decisions under pressure, balances out your autonomic nervous system (shifting from fight-flight or freeze dominance to a relaxed rest-and-digest dominance), modulates vagal tone, and increases heart rate variability. In my clinical practice, I’ve seen it reduce people’s breathing rate from over 40 breaths/minute to about four in as little as 1-2 minutes.

    I've had a flare up of anxiety and depression over the past few months, I'm back on meds since a month but now I'm experiencing an extreme boredom. I've lost interest in my hobbies and I'm only barely managing to go to work.

    When I was 7, my babysitters son molested me, then took me into the barn and set me up to fall from the rafters. I remember falling and hitting the floor with a thud. I fell flat on my back so the wind was knocked out of me. I thought I was going to die. I got up, ran to the house, knocked so hard on the locked door I broke the glass. I don’t remember much after that at the house. I do remember though feeling like I was looking down on my body from the rafters after I fell. I cannot remember any other details of the barn itself like how it looked on the outside. My younger brother witnessed this as well and thought they had killed me. We never told our (divorced) parents. Asking for help never resulted in anything and keeping dirty secrets was the generational rule of the day. I continued to live in abusive relationships because of attachment issues and executive dysfunction. At 60, I am disabled, much due to the physical traumas I experienced so young that were never attended to medically. The Body Keeps the Score really opened my eyes to why I have lived in pain for most of my life. I am working through it now, for 3 years, non-stop so far. Dissociation is still my go to, but I have found a few memories previously buried. The physical pain continues as I cannot relax my body enough to break the armored brace I have built around my rib cage and spine. Brilliant video, thank you so much.

    In my country (Norway, Scandinavia) lithium is considered to an extreme strong drug and rare to give a patient. You have to have an extreme form of bipolar type 1. Not sure how people can get this on Amazon!!😲 Never ever heard about 5 mg. Here it's like 42 mg, 93.mg and so forth. What have I missed here? Are you talking about the strong lithium (lithionit) only given by a licensed psychiatrist or a supplement?

    This book strikes me so hard that I got this instant epiphany about my anxieties in aging,loneliness and death. I,too,used to think it was the wedlock that imprisoned me and prevented me from being who I wanted to be, but actually we are all combatants in the fight against aging,and all this time I chose the wrong enemy.

    After years of horrible experiences with psychiatrists, therapists, and other “medical professionals” not believing me or invalidating my symptoms, I finally learned about structural dissociation. I lose time, I become a different person, I get depersonalized. I could not possibly trust another shrink again, so I’m integrating on my own. Thanks for covering this topic. ❤

    If you suffer from manic depression. I posted videos of my own depression I struggled with for over 15 years. It’s boring hearing a book read person tell you about how you feel and why, on what to do. I’m here to tell you, maybe I can give you clarity beyond what they speak of. I know the subject taught well, I know it first hand even better. Your pain is painful and it’s real, and i know the importance of saying that it will be okey, it will. It took 15+ years of hanging my a thread, and I made it. And you will too, just persistence to the next day. I post about everything so you will have to find those videos. But I cover things with no filter, because life doesn’t have one. Hope I help

      Do you still feel down and out when doing things that used to bring you joy or do these things escape you? Talking to different parts directly doesn’t mean you automatically lose coconsciousness and go into the past. Sad to hear this practitioner explain it this way. It is not accurate. Talking to parts directly is much more effective.

    • @theemilbarna
      @theemilbarna 5 місяців тому

      This is a valid point. Over the years I’ve delved deeper into Internal Family Systems therapy and find that the person is most conscious when they’re speaking from their core with their parts. Is this someone like what you’re referring to?

    • @KKKK-ld9wb
      @KKKK-ld9wb 5 місяців тому

      @@theemilbarna no. With structural dissociation, the parts are actual self states. Parts of a structural dissociated system can function on their own, and they can be coconscious with other parts. Someone with DID can remain coconscious and in the present when they have their parts talking directly to a therapist or someone else. I would argue that parts can do better work when they are spoken to directly instead of this notion that it is somehow better to talk directly through what your guest referred to as the apparently normal part. Coconsciousness is a skill that every dissociative system should learn. It is not superior to process only through the ANP. All parts deserve time in therapy. It is harmful to DID systems when a therapist acts as if one part is superior to others. All parts should have access to talking to the therapist.

    I am diagnosed one with ASPD, schizoid by age 26. Psychopaths are more dangerous because they’re chameleon they can hide their identity easily and blend in society, and they’re very charming individuals hard to spot them. We ASPD…..We can blend in as well but we will show our true color eventually, we have trouble to follow society rules, we’re pretty much misanthropic, we don’t ‘’hate’’ we just dislike people, hate is a strong word. We only blend in if it’s a career thing, when it benefits us we can put a fake charm only for those particularly reasons. We’re also social distance, socially awkward when we’re in the spotlight….We will turn the conversation back to you. We’re not narcissists….We don’t abuse people either. What do we get from It by abusing people? Boosting our pathetic ego to feel superior about ourselves? Why would we invest our emotions on people we don’t give a damn about it? What’s the point of this? Revenge? Pathetic attempt. That’s what an narcissist will do. We can be cruel, uncaring, callousness towards your feelings, that’s true. We can also give unblinking predatory stare to make people uncomfortable. We will show our true color in public, end of the day we don’t care. We only put fake charm like I said before, to get what we want. We’re opportunists…If you don’t benefit us, we will show our true color. Cold, uncaring, cruel at times because of low empathy. But abusing people? No…..We will only abuse people if you do something against us or it reminds our childhood trauma but you need to push our berserk button in severe way. Than we can be very angry, impulsive, and pretty much violent and it can end up fatal….We ASPD don’t care about people feelings. We can make a bond with people we really care about but in very rare circumstances. Out of this circle we don’t feel anything at all. Basically my nature is ‘’indifferent’’ cold, uncaring. Just don’t poke with us with a stick in severe way. Than our sadism, sociopathy comes up to sky.

    • @theemilbarna
      @theemilbarna 9 місяців тому

      Shaking is encouraged from a Somatic Experiencing lens. Be mindful of the sensations as they shake. Where do they originate? Is it running through the body in a particular way? Does your body need to move in a particular direction while shaking? Mindfully releasing the tension is the key. In fact, prey animals often shake to release tension when escaping a predator. Of course, I don’t know your personal situation so cannot guide you fully, but it’s great to hear you’re asking these questions! Keep up the great work 😊

    Great, another quasi-scientific and untestable concept that is going to be inflicted on clients. Can we just go back to demonic possession and bodily humors?

    I watched many videos about the differences between Sociopaths than Psychopaths and this is the most descriptive. Thank you Emil for making this video. I watched this video 3 times.

    My friend, I truly hope that you read Lee Strobel’s book, The Case for Christ. It’s a great read and contains the life-changing truth about the Light that gives light to the whole world. God bless you, Emil.

      Read all his Case For books 😊 Going to Bali next week and got his Does God Exist? to read while there (his most recent). Love his writing style! Great to hear from you, Simon. Hope you’re doing well.

    Not all psychopaths are the same. High functioning psychopaths are usually successful and have learned how to function lawfully in society.

    We would call it “make space, take space” in uni, being cognizant of how much of the conversation you were taking and asking if you were giving space for people who are generally underrepresented.

      Asking people personal questions is rude. If they feel comfortable to share it’s up to them

      @@sarahar616I would respectfully disagree Sarah. I’ve found over the years that people want to discuss what’s important to them. It’s quite easy to notice when a person isn’t comfortable and you leave it at that, but this strategy is to help with conversation hogging and taking the focus off yourself and being able to help another feel heard. I hope I’ve communicated this in a way that makes sense 😊

      @@theemilbarna I believe self acceptance is incredibly important for mental health. We already have enough to deal with. We don’t criticise extroverts no one tells them off for convocation hogging. Everyone needs to be educated

    I feel like a psychopath uses calculated terrorism while a sociopath is more likely to be more haphazard in the abuse. Keeping a person fearing they might die for several years through strategic manipulation and abuse is awful. Awful for your body and mind.
