Amtrak Day One Heritage ALC-42 301 Leads Coast Starlight 11 in Berkeley, CA (September 20th, 2024)
That's right railfans, you see the title now. After a year of waiting since the ALC-42's were placed into service on the Coast Starlight in March 2023, this particular engine, AMTK 301, the Day One painted locomotive for Amtrak's 50th Anniversary was finally placed onto this route. The train had left Seattle, Washington the previous day after running on the Empire Builder earlier in the week and we finally managed to see it come this way into the Bay Area going south towards Los Angeles Union Station. 301 is very special because the paint scheme is a recreation of Amtrak's very first livery when the company started passenger train service in May 1971. It was the only ALC-42 to be decorated for the 50th Anniversary while 5 P42DC's would wear other designs of paintwork. The train is seen here speeding through Berkeley at 9:34 AM operating about an hour and 10 minutes behind schedule with a tripleheader. 301 up front, ALC-42 318 in the middle and P42DC Number 11 trailing behind the Chargers. Fascinating because the P42 on this train has the same number as the train ID. Amtrak Capitol Corridor train 528 can also be seen departing the station with a very loud K5LA.

When’s the actual retirement of these trains?
It's today, although the MPI Rebuilt F40PH-2C (920-922) and MP36PH-3C locomotives (923-928) will continue to haul Bombardier coaches for service to Gilroy on weekdays. All EMD F40PH's (900-919) and Gallery Coaches will fully be replaced today, although Caltrain has retired some until today.
I was there on that day!

Great video! Sad to hear that F40s are in their final months of regular service! The good thing is the MP36PH-3C and the Bombardier cars will remain in place, but in order to see them, we'd have to travel all the way to Gilroy until CAHSR takes over in the 2030s or something like that.

3:25 loudest horn I’ve ever heard by far
The K5LA's on Coaster's Cabcars are loud indeed, but I think the audio on that file was too loud when I tried to look at the settings after a problem with another file for a train I shot on the way. I did do my best to try to make it not as loud while editing.

The consist you saw was actually oddly similar to the same cc train coming out of Martinez one day. 8307 was leading and after that Amtrak 5 came in with 60 leading as well at the same time the Capitol was departing.
Great video! Can't wait to ride in these. I wish SACRT was able to stick with the early or mid summer schedual of these running in service. Have to wait till the Folsom constuction which is now pointed at the end of summer.
