Caltrain Diesel, Bombardier and Gallery Fleet Tribute

  • Since 1985, Caltrain has been using F40PH diesel locomotives built by EMD with bi-level Gallery coaches built by Nippon Sharyo for use on their route between San Francisco, San Jose and Gilroy, California to replace old inherited Southern Pacific diesels and more vintage Gallery coaches built by the Pullman company for the Peninsula Commute. In the early 2000's, they acquired 18 Bombardier Bi-Level coaches transferred from Sounder in Seattle, and 6 MP36PH-3C locomotives built by Motive Power Industries to be used for their new express trains at peak hour travel periods, followed by an additional 8 coaches in 2008. Later in 2015, 16 coaches were handed over to Caltrain from Metrolink to help increase capacity with their Bombardier Bi-Level trains. As work was progressing for the new electrification project, Amtrak took charge of transporting two former electric EMD AEM-7 locomotives to Oakland in June 2019 on the California Zephyr, which were retired a few years earlier after running on the Northeast Corridor since the 1970's and 80's. Locomotive 929 was going to be used for spare parts, while 938 would eventually receive a new Caltrain paint scheme to test the overhead wires. However, neither of them have been running under their own power since they came to California, despite 938 being repainted into a Caltrain livery.
In July and August of 2024, I happened to go to a few different locations along the Caltrain route to get as much shots of the remaining push-pull fleets that have now been retired from their position to and from San Francisco, as the Stadler KISS EMU trains will now run between San Francisco, San Jose Diridon and Tamien, with three MPI-rebuilt F40PH's and MP36 engines will continue to be used for shuttle service to Gilroy with Bombardier Bi-Level coaches until those fleets will be replaced in the future. Come along as we say farewell to these famous locomotives and coaches that have served the San Francisco Peninsula very nicely over the years. You will also see a few shots near the yards along the street in San Francisco, looking at both old and new trains, along with the two former Amtrak AEM-7 "Toaster" locomotives, 929 and 938, the stored F40PH-2 910 and the stuff used for the holiday train. Enjoy!

It's today, although the MPI Rebuilt F40PH-2C (920-922) and MP36PH-3C locomotives (923-928) will continue to haul Bombardier coaches for service to Gilroy on weekdays. All EMD F40PH's (900-919) and Gallery Coaches will fully be replaced today, although Caltrain has retired some until today.
