What's interesting about exp gains in gen 1 is if you have a glitch pokemon whose exp calculation is divisable by 0. There are only two glitch pokemon out of the 154 glitch pokemon in the generation 1 games that experience this. The first is Hex: C1. Hex:C1 when it gains exp has an algorithm that tries to divide by 0, thus soft locking the game and forcing a reset. The other one is Yellow Missingno though you can work around that by using the merge Q glitch to make it level properly! :)
Badge Boost also happens in generations 2 and 3. In the generation 2 games, you also get a 12.5% boost with the Zephyr, Plain, Storm, and Glacier badges. In Ruby and Sapphire as well as Emerald, it was nerfed to just 10%
True! But I wanted to use this episode to go into detail about the glitch which gens 2 and 3 don't suffer from :) il do a special one for gen 2 cus those gyms also give type boosts which is pretty unique!
I'm using exp. All. My whole team is getting stat experience, right?
Yep that's right! In the same participants/non-participants split as regular exp :)
thanks for the easy to understand explanation
You're welcome! :)
this is so relaxing
Aw thanks! I'm so glad you think so!
10:12 if youre willing to stretch the rules a little bit (which i imagine you are considering you brought new team members in to finish off the remaining moves), technically you could still use all the moves specifically as Ditto by making a wild Ditto transform into these newly introduced team members then making your Ditto transform into the wild one, right? it still wouldnt be "with *JUST* a ditto", keyword "just", but youd still be able to say "with a ditto"
Yehh definitely :D I wish I'd thought of it at the time! I'll be sure to keep it in mind for gen 2 :)
Can't you let a wild ditto transform into your pokemon that knows one of the moves you couldn't get, then switch to your ditto and let it transform into the wild transformed ditto if that is possible
When i was a kid we did alot of traveling so i played ALOT of pokemon Red. I had a MONSTER of a Mewtwo that I just constantly beat the elite 4 with and after every run or two I would throw him in the PC to get that stat increase. I had the bright idea one day to load him into Pokemon Stadium and do the one where you mirror match an exact copy of your team. I don't remember the full team but I do remember that I had that Mewtwo, Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur. The other two would have been something I felt was strong back then. I couldn't beat the mirrored Mewtwo for NOTHING. It was funny being on the receiving end/seeing how the Mewtwo I had trained washed everyone it comes up against.
Hahah that's great! Everyone's onboard with the sweep until it's them that's being swept :D
@@kangaskdan exactly! I do have a bit of a follow up. So, obviously it has been a long time since I did this (Gen3 era) and my original collection got stolen, but I was wondering (especially with the VC versions of gen1&2) will they keep those increased stats? Because I feel like I remember having Mewtwo at something well over 400 in atleast ones of the stats. Basically my question is two part 1) is there actually a cap for those increased stats 2) would they keep those potentially insane values if sent up to Bank, then HOME, etc?
@PwnyOps I wish I knew the answer! I haven't had any experience with Home or Bank so I don't know how they store the stats! But surely if they are set up to accept gen 1/2 Pokémon, then they'll preserve the stat exp, the same way you'd expect them to preserve the EVs of a gen3+ Pokémon :) If you find out, let me know :D
@@kangaskdan will do, for science (and MATH) So, does that also mean you don't know if there is a cap to the amount your stats can grow when done that way?
The only caps I know about are the statexp caps in gen 1 and 2, so if you maxed out all statexp for all stats, your stats won't be able to be increased further (out of battle) :)
Immensely fucked up there's no way to see an opponent use Rock Slide in Red and Blue unless it's via Metronome
Right!! Or you fight a ditto with a Pokémon that has rock slide on it's learnset..
5:30 ♡
Thank you so much Manny Metronome, great name too :D Il be naming the metronome user in "all moves gen 3" after you :)
@@kangaskdan thank you and THANK YOU i can't wait to see it! ❤️❤️❤️
You can also put these moves on a pokemon, encounter a wild Ditto, wait for it to transform (and get your moveset), then switch into your own Ditto (getting your own moveset back), and then use them. At least I think that'll work?
Yehh that's what people seem to be implying! So I guess I could have done it all with one ditto (and my sneaky team of 6 at the end), at least ditto would have been the one using all the moves. Oh well il know for next time :)
🍿
You could get every move, if you used trainer fly glitch to make pokemon appear that have the level up moves needed. Maybe some glitch pokemon have the moves not in learn set? OR you could encounter the wild ditto roaming around, have it transform into kangaskhan/porygon/etc and then switch in YOUR ditto to copy those moves it copied from your other pokemon.
Yup exactly!! If only I could see these comments before I post the video :D well you've all given me great ideas for gen 2 at least!!
I think it'd be cool to see this for gen 2, or maybe with Smeargle?
Me too! Although smeargle would be more time-consuming... which means people would probably prefer me to do that one :D It would also have more of a gen 2 flavour... damn
VIDEO IDEA: Can you use all moves using Metronome? or How fast can you use all moves in Gen 1 using Metronome?
Haha how fast can I hold down the A button :D although I think there are some moves that metronome can't use (like mimic) so we might be waiting a while!
@@kangaskdan lol ok
Not gonna lie, I wasn't expecting that you would be able to get that many moves, for some reason I imagined way too much stuff not being in the Pokemon's movesets we see around the world. Also Waterfall existing in gen 1 will never not feel wrong haha. Nice video!
Yehh i was surprised too! My times playing gen 1 I always felt like the enemy uses leer and sand-attack and that's about it :D
Did I miss Waterfall?
7:06 :)
@@kangaskdan 😅😅
7:05 ...or roughly about 70*√2 pidgeys worth
Hahah! Took me a second to work out what you were on about :D That is the height of maths/pokemon humour, very well done :)
Some of your "signature moves" are not signature, as they can be bred onto other mons. For example, you don't need to have Delibird use Present; you can breed it onto Miltank. You have to catch Delibird, of course, but you don't have to count it because it doesn't use a move.
It's a fair point, but I thought using breeding in that way would be a bit of a slippery slope... I didn't want to come out with a final team of 10 pokemon needed to use all moves, ignoring the fact that I had to catch 49 to get the moves and breed them into the eggs. So I try to say levelup and tm learnset up top so I'm not tempted to try and sneakily reduce the number using other mechanics in the game :) Although I'll be changing that intro to add "and tutor moves" for gen 3!
*Me going to mention metronome* => "please nobody mention metronome" Oh ok, fair enough I guess but what about sky attack? *looks down* dammit!
Hahah I'm sorry, don't worry, gen 3 will be riddled with mistakes that i'll leave in just for you :)
before watching my mind went to a few things. if you can't swap no. but he is letting swapping next some that to me i imagine will be niche/hard to find waterfall, pin missle, twin needle and spore. i mean the bug attacks to me feel rare in some cases. also conversions from porygon.
Good observations! No swapping would be an interesting one, I'd be missing a whole lot of moves from gym leaders as it is always their ace that has the TM move. And definitely, I was convinced I'd be missing waterfall and spore as I don't think I've ever had those moves used against me in gen 1. Turns out it's because I'd never fished for a seaking in cerulean in a casual playthrough :D
Ditto was glad to no use razor wind😂😂😂, because it's so bad. But another way to do that is to have a battle with a firend (I meant playing with onter cartridge by yourself)that got this move,so that Ditto can do it on it's own,but hey the run had a good massage in the end, you don't need to do everything on your own.😊 The intro was super funny.Dittos are doing everything for sure , especially in day care.😂😂😂 I bet that coding this overlay took a lot of time, I wonder how you would do that in gen 3 or 4 .😅
Thanks Batel! The battling with a friend is a great idea! I knew I wanted to use the last few moves somehow, I was thinking maybe adding a trainer into the game with those pokemon for me to copy off, but then I thought this whole ditto question came from the minimum team video, so it'd make sense to show the new minimum team if we let ditto do his thing :D But i'll definitely be stealing the link cable battle idea for future! :D
@@kangaskdan Basically Ditto is carrying the team, when it comes to minimum amount of pokemon that you'll need to use up all of these moves. 😁 And go for it! If you'll ever need a hand with some footage for the cable link battle, I don't mind helping out .😊
I think that allowing metronome, you could get all moves with just ditto and a pokemon that can learn metronome and mimic (also needed since it's the only one of the missing nine that metronome can't call in gen 1). Chansey would be a good candidate for the metronome user since it would also knock out softboiled and egg bomb, leaving only 5 moves to grind out with metronome, but there could be a better option I'm not thinking of. Of course, if you're going the metronome route, Mew can cover transform, metronome, and mimic all on its own, so it's kind of a moot point.
A Mewt point* Yeh all good ideas, I stuck with the ditto approach cus it made the run feel at least semi-legitimate (ignoring the fact that I got it as a starter pokemon :D)
can't you get a pokemon with those moves, get a wild ditto to copy the pokemon, and get your ditto to copy the wild ditto?
That is a great shout! I didn't know if there were some rules about transforming into a transformed pokemon, but I'll definitely check this out. I would probably still keep the final result the same, but this would be an interesting way to get the last few on the board :) I'll keep this in mind for gen 2!
Gen 1 is the only gen which allows transforming into a transformed target, so it would work. (Future gens make it fail if you try, to prevent a softlock where your Ditto and their Ditto keep transforming into each other and can never run out of PP.)
Could a Mew do it solo, it gets Transform and learns all the TMs. I think it would only miss Dizzy Punch? Could you Transform into another Ditto that has transformed into a Pokemon with those moves?
Great idea! I need to see if it's allowed, I thought maybe there was some limitation about transforming into a pokemon that has transformed, but I'll see if it works :D I'd probably have to say my minimum team count required is "1*", *as the full party of remaining-move-having pokemon would still be required to be transformed into :)
@@kangaskdanin gen 1 you can transform multiple times, that’s how shiny hunters can get a shiny ditto for breeding in gen 2. Doing a double transform may turn mew into a ditto permanently, I don’t remember if it does that to mons you already own or not. But if you cheat in a wild mew and it transforms twice, when you catch it, it’ll be a ditto
@rickytickybobbywobbin7430 that's bonkers! Gen 1 is the gift that keeps giving :D

Metronome :) Jk! Great video Dan I'm looking forward to what you come up with next
Thanks mate!!
I’m bringing w00t back.
W00t w00t!
Now see how many moves you can use with just a Smeargle
Haha maybe with an endless army of smeargles. Ditto is much more reusable:)
God damn. Ignore what I said about sky attack at the end, the rival gets it in the red/blue champion battle, it was added in a random file in the assembly that I didn't look at. Doh!! Thanks DwunD!!
Everyone make sure to SMASH that Like Button though! And bring on Gen 3 all moves!
Dude! I was typing my angry ackchyually comment already, you ruined it.
@Voliharmin haha no one is more angry about this than I am :D
@Voliharmin damn lol. Well, ill let you get the next one.
Have no fear both, there will definitely be a next one. I'm gonna be sweating bullets before posting the gen 3 vid
The title of this video made me think of another question: how many backport smeargles would be necessary to use all moves (with rare candies)? Would 16 be enough?
Haha great question! I think 16 should be plenty, 10 moves each assuming you get them all at level 5 :) And spoiler alert, we might not need a 17th to get us all the way to 165 cus of some annoying missing moves :D
@@kangaskdanWith a transforming smeargle you could make that number much lower, right?
Metronome
@dragonslayerz2220 I mean, technically a smeargle with transform can learn all moves, just not in one battle
@@dragonslayerz2220 can you Sketch transform?
Yooooooo anotha one!
2 videos in one year! I must be feeling ambitious :D
Nicely done. I always thought there was a trainer with a lickitung that knew cut near the power plant in gen 1, might be wrong though. And the champions pigeot in R/B knows sky attack. Only pokemon with that move (aside from Moltres who learns it via level up).
Oh god are you serious?! Damn :D I should consult with you before I ever post a video! Oh well at least my min team count is the same, just wrong number of unused moves :p doh
@kangaskdan the trainer is one you never really think of. Cause nobody goes to the power plant lol (unless it's to catch zapdos).
@DwunD016 I found the awkward piece of code where sky attack gets shoved in. The swine, setting me up for failure :D I haven't found any sneaky Cut additions yet though, il pop over to the power plant later and check it out :)
i love this series, cant wait! i imagine theres gonna be some double ditto shenaningans for moves like sharpen or conversion that no trainer uses, im really curious
Thanks! Well you may have figured out why there's a question mark in the video title :D Damn elusive porygons!
I wish they kept stat exp. It always felt better to kill more stuff get more stronger as opposed to specifically only KOing specific enemies that give specific EV to max out 2 specific stats.
Yehh I agree, I guess they wanted an extra layer of strategy, but I'd rather just fight everything forever and have the most powerful possible version of a pokemon that I could have :D
nice
Absolutely loved the video! Looking forward to the next one! :D
Thanks so much Luke!! :)
When inevitably doing Gen 3, you can save yourself a bit of time by slightly altering the Python code. Assign each evolution line some sort of difficulty score to obtain, then sort your final lists by summed difficulty score. Not a perfect system of course but should help prevent you from having to get roamers or Pokémon with high catch rates etc I would assign every Pokémon a 0, and then just add points for every difficulty spike, like for example and without too much thought put into it: - low catch rate : +1 - 1% spawn only : +2 - 5% spawn only: +1 - version exclusive: +1 - roamer : +3 - event exclusive: +10
That's a great shout! I'll definitely do something like this if I end up with thousands of options again :D Only issue is, something tells me unobtainable jirachi is still gonna have to be on the list, for a move I've never heard of, doom desire!
@@kangaskdanyou can get it… it just costs like 200 dollars for Pokemon box ruby and sapphire, + a gamecube
There is actually a move reminder in Gen 2… it’s in Stadium 2. Technically possible, so this could save some eggs.
I've learnt about that since posting the video :) not sure what would take me more time though, riding around on my bike whilst watching UA-cam, or battling through a bunch of elite 4 stadium 2 runs :)
Fantastic video, amazing how people are still finding unique ways to play these games after all these years. If I could offer one bit of feedback, it's that nicknaming all the Pokemon, while cute, does make keeping track of who's using what move a little more confusing especially when running through moves so rapidly that the on screen Pokemon doesn't yet match the commentary
Thanks for the comment! And the feedback :) That's fair! I do need to get better at matching the video to the audio. It's hard when tackle, string shot, harden, flash, takes 3 seconds to say, and 10 seconds to show up on screen :D Il have a think about the nicknames for gen 3, or il have a think about my script :) At least for the next video it'll be easy to follow, ditto ditto ditto!
Interesting question and very satisfying showing, my brain is pleased seeing the numbers slowly going up. Great video mate, I really enjoyed it!
Thanks so much! I enjoy seeing the numbers go up too 😁
Cool video. One recommend: I think instead of using the modern art on the left (Started FR&LF) it would be better if you used the retro style water color art. Would fit the classic theme better
Good point! I just had the Pokémon art already and couldn't be bothered to upgrade/downgrade for the videos :D it's too late for ditto gen 1 but maybe il have it ready for ditto gen 2 :)
I love gen 1 & 2 the most, and this was a fantastic breakdown with brilliant illustrations. I have a couple questions (anyone can answer): 1) Is there a quality source to read more about these topics (aside from sites like Bulbapedia)? I've always wanted a complete guide to gen 2 breeding, for instance. 2) What's the best method for stat exp training after vitamins? E4 + Red in gen 2? I'm wondering about giving CAL some Mews and Mewtwos lol. Maybe hatching a mon and giving it EXP Share while rebattling E4 for the best stat exp from the get-go. Utilizing boosted exp seems to not really matter since it's the same amount of stat exp you'll need to hit the 65k regardless of reaching level 100 quicker. 3) Is there a way of inferring your pokemon's stat exp, apart from doing rigorous calculations from a pokemon's first battle or checking PC recalculations until they don't change?
Thanks for the kind words! To answer your questions: 1. I have no idea! When I'm making these I normally use the disassemblies to make sure the calculations and assumptions that places like Bulbapedia makes, which is how I found the Bulbapedia mistake in the Experience video :) I'll add a gen 2 breeding guide to the list of pokemaths, so eventually you might be able to find a complete guide here! 2. Thankfully in gens 1 + 2 you don't have to be fussy with statexp training, defeating 100 wild sentret in the first route would give you an extra 20,500 statexp, distributed across your stats. Defeating Will's Xatu 41 times would give you about the same. If you don't care about the level of your pokemon and just want the most statexp the fastest possible way, then E4 + Red is your best shout because typically those are the trainers with the highest base stat pokemon. If you have no time constraints, or are trying to keep below a certain level, defeating the lowest level pokemon you can find, over and over again is the best bet :) With either approach you'll still end up with a max statexp pokemon eventually! 3. Yeh you've hit the nail on the head with those approaches unfortunately. Either catch a fresh pokemon, make a note that it's statexp is 0, then manually jot down everything you defeat, and you'll have a constant tally of the stat exp. Or like you said, keep grinding til the stats dont change when you go in/out of the PC, that way you know youve hit max stat exp for all stats. Or you can use the stat formula to estimate what your statexp might be, but to do that you'd need to know the DVs too which is a whole other issue! The easiest way possible is to use something like pkHex, but not very useful if you're playing on a physical device!!
@@kangaskdan Thank you for the detailed response! It basically confirms everything I was thinking. Hope to see more videos like this from you in the future!
Loved the content, and your voice is so soothing
Thank you!! :)
YIPPEEEEEE
To make things even MORE complicated for gen 3, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness gives the 80-ish Pokémon within access to moves that they cannot otherwise learn. At least the already required Lugia gets both Psycho Boost and Featherdance this way! So Deoxys and Pigeot shouldn’t be explicitly required!
So I've heard! The issue is with the 6 starters all having signatures, I'm going to be playing a lot of FRLG/RSE :D I'm hoping people forgive me if I ignore the fact that XD/Colosseum exist :) they'll get an honourable mention in the end (and maybe their own video in the future!)
@@kangaskdan oooh, very fair lol

Another fantastic one. Watch on 0.75 speed folks
I can't stand my voice at 1x or 1.25x speed, I think 0.75x would kill me :D Thanks for the comment!
These are so interesting to see! Can't wait to see the later gens... where every single pokemon has a signature move 😅
Haha I've started the research for gen 3 and it really feels like everything is a signature move, I'm predicting I'm going to not have very many options to consider when I'm choosing my team :D gotta get all 6 starters, gotta get the mythicals, gotta get the snake and the mongoose, gotta....
Must be find to program! However, if you find Dizzy Punch and Extremespeed odd in Gen II, oh boy, you are in for big surprises later on.
Oh god, if you have gen 3 spoilers, now is the time 😁 I've already researched volt tackle, and that pretty much every legendary and mythical has a signature, which should be fun 😂
@@kangaskdan Ah, Volt Tackle is a fun secret. Have fun getting all the legendaries, especially Jirachi without brazen cheating. But have you considered Shadow moves? Since both Colosseum and XD battles work the same as in the main games, I would say they count. A casual playthrough of XD could help with getting rare Pokémon - mainly Lugia knowing Psycho Boost which eliminates needing Deoxys. You can then freely trade the mons with the rest of Gen III games. Also, some moves change even within the same generation. Usually, it is only a slight change in PP or accuracy but Shadow Rush changes quite a bit so it would be cool to showcase it in Colosseum as well if you do choose to include the Shadow moves.
With the way I create my minimum team to use all moves, using the Pokémon disassemblies I'm thinking il want to try and keep this purely in the GBA games, it'll mean a little bit of brazen cheating here and there, but at least il be confident in my answer :D One day il be brave enough to venture into the other games, I hear good things about Colosseum!
You could technically use the Move Reminder of Stadium 2, to get those moves from the Hitmon line or those from the low level Pokemon, but that would require doing many runs of the Elite 4 + Champion there, since you can only get a move per run.. so yeah
Yehh that's not something I knew about until a few people commented about it on this one :D But oof, if I'm going for the easiest option, quickly trading 2 Pokémon from 2 red saves seemed a lot easier than multiple runs through stadium 2 :D Although it would technically make this more of a gen 2 only challenge (minus squirtle and moltres :D )
