Hi I'm Craig! I love collecting Fountain Pens! From antique Waterman's Ideal pens and ephemera that are over 100 years old, to modern user pens, and Japanese Maki-e pieces that are literal works of art! I also go to a few fountain pen shows and events that I cover here as well. I will occasionally talk about wrist watches and anything else that I think is interesting! Thanks for hanging out!
Send me a letter or postcard! I will be sure to write back:

1927 16mm Waterman's Ideal Fountain Pen - RESTORED 24fps w/Music
At long last, here it is! I bought this 1927 film for $40 on eBay back in March and I finally got it into the right hands! Justin from @originsarchival restoring and preserving this nearly lost media. I will be making a video soon about the different processes it took to get to this finished restoration but it came a long way!
The pens featured are the Waterman's Number Seven in Green and Pink. The end says "now you have seen all six" but this version doesn't show the other four colors. The music is royalty free from epidemic sound and I thought it suited it well. This is a silent film after all!
**Note: The correct speed for a silent film is 16fps but I chose the faster 24fps for this music. You can change the playback speed to 0.75x to get a more accurate feel. I will post the 16fps and other formats soon!**

Those are a couple other items that were sent in to me and I decided to make videos ...

Hey everyone! Back in 2022, I made a video talking about these pens with the little bit of knowledge I had on them. Since then, I have "completed" the set as far as I possibly can and I wanted to share an in-depth overview of the series. I am getting better at filming but I am still learning on how to color correct the video in post. It is definitely a challenge! Follow me on Instagram! instagr...

WHAT IS A PUMP FILLER? Waterman's Ideal

Hey everybody I am back with a new video about some OLD pens! Waterman had 4 early self filler mechanisms before they got to the lever in 1915. It may have a fatal flaw but they are still highly sought after by collectors! A commentor mentioned the other day "I am not UA-cam" and it got me thinking. I have started every video off with "Hey UA-cam!" so starting today, I will be saying "Hey Every...

I would love to have one.😊
I was JUST NOW made aware of this MOST AWESOME pen!! It made me so endlessly disappointed to find out that it was no longer available as of 4 YEARS AGO! Why?! Seriously, my luck, why...?! (Rhetorical)
Dan is just taking a break! They will be available soon!
It's not that they are sold out-I couldn't afford one if they weren't-but I hope you enjoy it in good health.
Cool!
It looks neat. Seams like there is a learning curve. Did it take you long to get used to it?
I stumbled upon a short about this interesting pen today and went looking, only to see that they're sold out probably for a while longer [said october-november 2024] so it's great to see it in action with more detail. Best of luck with your health and projects. May whoever wins this pen enjoy it thoroughly, hopefully I'll have money to get it once it's back if I am not the chosen one <3.
❤
You've likely already given it away, but I happened upon content on Dan's brass pen today and was disappointed that they'd already sold out. I'm ambidexterous and have been getting into cursive and calligraphy with my left hand lately. I find it incredibly therapeutic with music or a good audiobook. Anyhow, if you do still have the pen, maybe consider me for the giveaway! Thank you for your vid
Such a wonderful tool! It looks like it's lovely to work with!
I want that pen. It’s cool.
Do you sell these??
That little thingy it's so cool
Thank you for the review
But why a plactic feeder
I like the blue and yellow one!
Hey, Craig! Just wanted to thank you AGAIN for your info! I just posted a thanks in your old(ish) Visconti HSBA video. Unfortunately, a friend just mangled the nib on my new HSBA. Now, THIS video saved the day. Greg will be repairing mine. He responded immediately - i was shocked. I did tell him your video sent me, and he was quite pleased to hear you're out there sharing his work. So once again, thank you, Craig. You really have been a HUGE help in my fountain pen world.
I thought the boy and girl would get together for a drink in a local speakeasy
Dude thank you so much for scanning and sharing all the catalogs!!
You’re welcome!
Sweet merciful Jesus that is terrifying…
Congrats on your sobriety man!!! We’re proud of you! And don’t worry about posting non-pen stuff. I have about 500 pens in my collection, but it’s still a love hate relationship with them sometimes. Again, congrats!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing this, an interesting video!
Зачем нужен пенал на десяток ручек? Я с собой могу носить 1-2
Wonderful! 24 fps really is probably the most accurate frame rate this would have been seen at in 1927, 16 fps is really only appropriate for very early silent films and some home movies.
Thank you!
Hecking fantastic! Finally got the time to watch it and it was worth it, the restoration is exceptional and the music is oddly fitting And I find it amusing that the ad features the Pink Nº7, wasn't that the model which got a color change? I think to black because "nonono, pink can't be a color for a pen made for men!" Which is hilarious and silly!
I'm curious your opinion of the Dr G's Pen Apothecary solution.....
Fun Fact: back before dictation was recorded on dictaphones or voice recorders, stenographers (like the lady here) took down dictation in shorthand (usually either Gregg or Pittman) on a steno pad. And even when ballpoint pens came out, fountain pens were the preferred instrument because you could write faster with less pressure on the point. I believe that Pittman shorthand (which was the method often taught in Catholic and NYC high schools) used different amounts of pressure, hence the emphasis on "shading," I'm guessing. My mom learned Gregg shorthand (which was favored in public and Long Island high schools) and only used one level of pressure. I, on the other hand, took Speedscript almost 50 years ago. You couldn't go as fast as true shorthand, but you could learn it a lot faster. Good for note taking and jobs requiring only "light dictation."
This was lovely! I wish I could go back in time... I'd do so much damage at that store
I don't always buy a pen, but when I do, I make sure it's unequalled in its expediency for manifolding
He looks like Peter Griffin.
Him do him do,😸🙀😸
The blonde girl looks like actress Pauline Garon
Hm, whom to be for Halloween? the guy, the girl, or Globeman with glasses? as if there's any contest.
Soooo me! Globe man!!!
So interesting. Thanks for your hard work.
The girl (for so she would have been called back then, as we would today call her a woman) wrote in shorthand. Was it Gregg or Pitman? And what did it say?
I was wondering, too what it says. I'm sure it is Gregg. I learned Gregg in HS in the 1970s. It's mostly 'brief forms' that I've forgotten.
My mother was an old school secretary. She could take shorthand just that fast and do 100 WPM on a manual typewriter.
This is so cool Craig! Thanks for posting this!!!!!! :)
I'LL BUY 57
You made two mistakes here. The music is suitable for the 1950s-1960s. It's WRONG for a film from the 1920s. The speed is WRONG. Many "restored" silent films with soundtracks added, are run at the correct speed. Why would you deliberately speed up the film? Would you play a 33 rpm record at 45 rpm?
Did you read my description?
So amazing! Thanks for rescuing this!
I would rather watch this, than alot of crap they have out now. Fountain pens were a thing back then too. Someone on YT was showing some old pens and also showed inside of a large empty store that was occupied by Waterman. It was like a large jewelry store is now, but of pens. Was that you? Craig
That was me! Yeah it’s the interior of the Waterman’s headquarters at 191 Broadway in NY. They were there from 1917 to about 1936. I own the original (and only) glass negative of the interior 😃
@@CraigRoccanova YES!!!! 😁 I knew it- I need to go back and save that video, had a computer hiccup and lost all my stuff. And I forgot about it--Thank You!
That guy in the department store was a hunk. 😍
They had fun with this globe head I am sure
Ah ah, she put the pen in her purse *before* she even hand the seller the cash. It was that good?!
The pink is the best one!
That girl' s smile was so cute
You are such a legend for preserving this. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
I can't believe technology has advanced so much. I'd like a Waterman #7 please!
Really cool 👍
Fantastic!! I will point out that the ad never mentions pen collecting; it's all about buying a pen for use. I'd love to see more of these sort of videos.
Well of course! These are writing instruments and daily use tools. Collecting them wasn’t a thing until probably the late 1970s and into the 1980s. Decades after the US version went defunct
@@CraigRoccanova There have been pen collectors almost since commercially produced pens were invented. But there were very, very few collectors until the mid-20th century, because pens were just ordinary everyday objects, like paperclips or bottles or bottlecaps.
As someone who enjoys using Fountain Pens regularly, this was a fascinating thing to watch!
Great restoration, but the music is anachronistic.
You can always mute it. The song when I looked it up showed it as “vaudeville/jazz”. Also it’s 1927, George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue was just three years prior with the same amount of quirkiness. The song may not be perfect but it’s catchy. Who knows what was actually playing along with this in that New Jersey movie theater 🤷🏼♂️
@@CraigRoccanova I liked it. It fit.
