First descent of this stunning canyon near Hillgrove on the edge of Oxley wild rivers national park. We scouted it last season while doing the Butterfly goldmine canyon nearby. It looked super exciting and didn't disappoint, it is the Big Crack! A magic fairy land below with cool boulder caves, turtles, rock wallabies, and a super strong tree. Longer video soon, and of the gorgeous unnamed rainforest canyon with triple pool drop and wicked knife edge ridge we also found. Merry canyon season all! Our kind are so rare, and such a blast to catch up with like minds...recently found a channel , Sharna Banana, a QLD Women doing similar things as you, minus the waterfalls. We have always had our share of nutters, that can kill you and themselves . In the trad scene, your reputation would percolate through community. I climbed solo for many years, till rescued by a crew at Frog Buttress. Gained a girlfriend and a community, learnt more in a couple of years than the previous two decades. If you ever go to Frog, go on the weekend during the cooler months, the crag faces West and gets really hot after midday. Abseiling is verboden unless you climb up first, rockfall has killed a few over the years. I was down your way about ten days ago, twas too hot for me ( bit cooler than the coast ) so I understand the logic of being near cool clean water.

    So is that the volume of water coming out of the side of the cliff face or is there a stream up there making that water fall and you guys weren't smart enough to show either of the two possibilities ?!!!!!!

      Ha never claimed to be smart, but there is a very quick look back at the creek 10sec in, and we do mention its on Four mile creek at the end. Hope that clarifies.

    Very well done. I am pleased to have just stumbled upon this vid... I scouted that crack in the 80's (but only ever walked into the creek way downstream). When you say "first decent), I am fairly sure that some UNEMC/UNEES guys did it in the 70s (using much dodgier gear!)? Still Awesome - especially that there's granite, unlike many other such drops in the region. There's a great canyon just down the road from there (and on the other side), we knew it as "Elaine's Crack" - 18 pitches (can bail earlier) as I recall, would love to see some footage of that! Do you know it? I could try and dig out some info... Another is Marengo Falls (interesting pool after a long pitch) if you're up for such an adventure!

    • @ardeneques
      @ardeneques Місяць тому

      Ah good to hear the algorithm works sometimes. Oh awesome! Okay, yeah we thought someone might of descended before, its so tempting, was our first descent at least hopefully more to come. Ah yes heard of Elaine's crack, not been there yet its on the list with many others out that way. Thanks for the info, if you have more would be great. We have done Housewater creek a little north of Marengo years ago, that videos on here titled Guy Fawkes. Always up for such adventures, and info from those who've been before is invaluable. Thanks for getting in contact. You can get me on ardenseques@gmail.com if you like.

    • @jonasbellchambers8142
      @jonasbellchambers8142 Місяць тому

      Nice. Elaines is def on the radar, as is Marengo. We did house water creek out that way about 5 years ago. This crack is a classic tho. very intimidating at the top! I would not be at all surprised if its been done before, its pretty close to the road and easy access and exit. The long point Hill grove area has a lot of low key but epic canyoning potential. We did the creek line thru the mine last year too. Looking forward to more exploring out that way. Thanks for your comment, its awesome to hear from the crew who pioneered alot of these canyons!

    • @MGoose66
      @MGoose66 Місяць тому

      @@ardeneques Well, since you kindly asked, here's some more info from the vault... "Elaine's Gorge" - the original more appropriate name for the aforementioned canyon was named after Elaine Cantrill, who, along with R Jones, did the first climbing route at Four Mile Creek Falls "Skylite", (6), 126m, back in 1969. No doubt they abseiled down in order to climb back up! The chimney next to the falls is also a published climbing route (We are not amused, 14), first ascended in 1971 by J Street and Dick Gallimore. The crag next to the Chimney/slot also has a climb called Nuttagee (14) (by Gallimore and Jones, also 1971). Half a dozen other routes and pitches at the falls are described in old climbing notes from 1975.

    Way gnarly, this is so much better than the Gold Mine. Is the inflatable regarded as disposable, as I can't imagine it lasting long in those conditions, what make and where can I get one. Thanks mate for details on your Yaks. I presume it's Eric rather than Elizabeth. My major problem is how to get back to my vehicle, all the portaging, and even the lower sections of the Clarence have fatal features. It is obvious that doing it at my age and solo is insane. The footage of the NZ Clarence is really impressive, that's what I call a river, oh to have the money to get there.@@ardeneques
