Welcome to my UA-cam channel, the aim of which is to produce high quality organ videos.
As Director of Music at a leading Catholic co-educational prep school in the UK a significant part of my job is to play the organ for services in our beautiful Georgian chapel, including at Mass every Sunday. Prior to teaching, I was a first-study organist at Southampton University where I was fortunate to study with Stephen Farr and David Owen Norris before becoming a Choral Scholar for a year at Truro Cathedral.

Postlude in D minor – Sir Charles Villiers Stanford // St Mary Redcliffe
Sir Charles Villiers Stanford’s _Postlude in D minor_ is the most flamboyant and extended of both sets of preludes and postludes. It opens vigorously in D minor with a ten-bar chordal theme with a lively dotted rhythm, which pervades the whole piece. This is followed by a quieter theme beginning in the pedals and moving chromatically before returning to the tonic key with a repetition of the opening idea. The middle section in D major is quieter and dominated by running quavers, Stanford cleverly developing the opening theme before, once again, bringing us home to D minor for a brief recapitulation. This builds back towards the major key culminating in a reprise of the opening idea, this time in the triumphant key of D major. With its running quavers, the final bars give a brief nod to the central section before the grandiose final chords on (almost) full organ.
The 1912 Harrison and Harrison organ of St Mary, Redclffe in Bristol is famous worldwide. Meticulously sampled for Hauptwerk by Beauty in Sound, it’s both a wonderful addition to the library of organs sampled by Hauptwerk but perfect for Stanford’s music (having been built just four years after the publication of this piece) and much else besides.

Noël Suisse - Louis-Claude Daquin // St Maximin Isnard
Переглядів 173Місяць тому
Born into a family of Italian origin, Louis-Claude Daquin (1694-1772) lived in France during the reign of Louis XIV, studied with Louis Marchand, and in 1739 was named organist of the Chapelle Royale. In 1755, he was also appointed organist at Notre-Dame Cathedral. The music for which he is now best known is the Nouveau Livre de Noëls, a collection of variations on traditional French Christmas ...
Buxtehude - Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland BuxWV 211 // Görlitz Sonnenorgel
Переглядів 3172 місяці тому
Buxtehude's setting of the Lutheran choral _Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland_ is perhaps less well known than Bach's larger scale version from the Leipzig Chorales, which I have previously recorded for the channel. (ua-cam.com/video/ViLxQ3fHAZg/v-deo.html) However, in its miniature form, it is every bit as beautiful. Buxtehude presents the melody in an embellished form with a dignified accompanimen...
Buxtehude - Fuga in C BuxWV 174 // Noordbroek Schnitger
Переглядів 4773 місяці тому
Born around 1637, Dietrich Buxtehude held the post of organist at the Marienkirche in Lübeck for the majority of his life and he was a seminal figure in the North German Organ School. The Fuga in C major BuxWV 174 (for manuals only) is known as his 'jig' fugue thanks to the compound time signature and spritely style. It seems highly plausible that it was known by J. S. Bach, who was a great adm...
Folk Tune - Percy Whitlock // St David's Cathedral
Переглядів 5823 місяці тому
Originally as a chorister and subsequently as assistant organist, Percy Whitlock was closely associated with Rochester Cathedral until the age of twenty-seven, when he became organist and choirmaster of St Stephen's Church in Bournemouth. Although he composed a number of larger scale pieces for organ, he is generally remembered for his smaller pieces, of which his _Folk Tune_ is a particularly ...
Stanford - Postlude on a Theme of Gibbons (Song 22) Op. 105 No. 2 // Salisbury Cathedral
Переглядів 2993 місяці тому
Stanford's second set of Short Preludes and Postludes Op. 105 was published in 1908, just a year after the first set. The six pieces in the set alternate between preludes and postludes and half of the pieces are based upon tunes composed by the great English renaissance composer, Orlando Gibbons. The second piece in the set, a postlude, utilises fragments of Gibbon’s Song 22. The tune often acc...
Bach - Prelude & Fugue in C major BWV 545 // Velesovo Močnik
Переглядів 7524 місяці тому
Youthful and exuberant, Bach's Prelude and Fugue in C major BWV 545 is most likely an early work from his time in Mühlhausen. Well-crafted and assured, the piece is an apt demonstration of the young Bach’s confidence. Its history is rather complex, appearing in another form in B flat but also in versions with two different slow movements inserted between the prelude and fugue. Played without th...
Prelude in Eb Op. 41 No. 1 - Alexandre Guilmant // Landau St Maria
Переглядів 7154 місяці тому
The Parisian concert organist and composer, Alexandre Guilmant, was born in Boulogne-sur-Mer to a family of organists and organ builders. Largely self-taught, he studied for a short period with Lemmens, the great Belgian organist. Although he held the position as organist at La Trinité in Paris, it was in the concert hall where he achieved fame. He was received by Queen Victoria at Windsor Cast...
William Harris - Prelude in Eb // Chemnitz Sauer
Переглядів 2365 місяців тому
The English organist and composer, Sir William Henry Harris (1883-1973) is best known for his Anglican choral music, much of which was composed during his tenure as organist of St George's Chapel, Windsor. Prior to that Harris held positions at New College and Christ Church, Oxford. In addition to his choral writing, Harris composed for organ over a period of 74 years. Many of these pieces are ...
Trumpet Tune in D - David Johnson // Romsey Abbey
Переглядів 2,3 тис.5 місяців тому
The Texan-born organist David Johnson was Professor of Music at Arizona State University for many years and evidently held great affection for trumpet tunes, having composed nine of them. Trumpet tunes are not a recent invention, they were popular during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with some fine examples written by Purcell and perhaps most famously by Charpentier. This particular ...
Healey Willan - Adore te, devote // Salisbury Cathedral
Переглядів 2056 місяців тому
*Prelude ‘Thee we adore, O blessed Saviour’* _Adoro te, devote_ is one of the five beautiful hymns by St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274). The Gregorian chant for this hymn formed the basis for this piece by Healey Willan dating drom 1954. Although born in England, James Healey Willan spent most of his professional life in Canada, most famously as precentor of the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Toron...
Prelude on 'Down Ampney' - Henry George Ley // Armley Schulze
Переглядів 3598 місяців тому
The Cotswold village of Down Ampney was the birthplace of Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), whose father was the vicar of All Saints Church. In 1906, Vaughan Williams named his tune for the great Pentecost hymn, 'Come down, O love divine' after his birthplace. Like Vaughan Williams, his near contemporary Henry George Ley (1887-1962) was the son of a clergyman and also born in the west of Engl...
Clément Loret - Prière (Douze Pièces pour Orgue) // Landau, St Maria
Переглядів 7528 місяців тому
Belgian-born Clément Loret (1833 - 1909) is an organist and composer of the nineteenth century. Despite being less famous than many of his French contemporaries, Loret’s influence can be heard in the music of Gabriel Fauré and Eugène Gigout, who were both pupils of Loret at the Niedermeyer School in Paris. Taken from a collection of twelve pieces for organ, this delightful _Prière_ is full of c...
Stanford - At Easter-tide // Romsey Abbey
Переглядів 2549 місяців тому
Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (30 September 1852 - 29 March 1924) is one of the giants of music in the Anglican Church. His choral and organ works are probably heard somewhere in the Anglican Communion almost daily. The Six Occasional Preludes are a later work, the third of which based upon an ancient Easter hymn. The chromaticism in this work is perhaps influenced by his studies in Leipzig, th...
Bach - Christ lag in Todesbanden BWV 625 // Noordbroek Schnitger
Переглядів 36310 місяців тому
Serious, somber and solid, Bach's setting of _Christ lag in Todesbanden_ BWV 625 from his _Orgelbüchlein_ captures in miniature the meaning of Easter. Repetitive descending semiquavers perhaps depict the death of Jesus but an upbeat tempo portrays something of the glory of the resurrection. In just over a minute of music, Bach has perfectly captured the first verse of Luther's chorale, upon whi...

I love your playing and registration. Such a lovely piece, I have just finished learning it.
Thanks very much!
I’m learning this piece at the moment, it’s a bit of a challenge for a novice like me! This particular rendition is inspiring! Thanks Marcus.😊
Thank you, it’s a great piece!
Outstanding!😊
Thank you!
A beautiful and great recording! Very well played! I like it very much! Thanks for uploading! Greetings from Germany!
Thank you! And greetings from the UK.
A Stanford staple played with vigour and poise! Congratulations on a superb performance!
Thank you, James!
Nice playing Marcus! I think we all play it for the crunchy chords at the end but it’s a great piece all through. Sounds good!
Thanks, Colin!
Very nice job!
Thank you!
A glorious sound in the beginning, with beautiful soft interludes. Sounds great on this new set!
Thank you, Ralph. Happy New Year!
A fantastic sample for this music dear Marcus. Beautiful! I wish you a blessed new year dear Marcus!
Many thanks, Roland!
Great Marcus, really enjoyed this and the registrations used were just perfect to get the best out of the excellent St Mary Redcliffe sample set!!
Thank you very much!
Everything works well together here: composition; playing; registration; sample set. Hearing this I really must save up for SMR - not forgetting the purchase of a lot more RAM. Thank you, Marcus, Richard and Jerry.
Thanks for watching, Andrew. SMR is worth every penny, you won’t regret saving for it!
As you remark, Marcus, CVS's D minor 'Postlude' is very well suited to this magnificent Harrison and Harrison Organ, captured so brilliantly in this glorious sample set by BiS and played by you with great aplomb: bravo - and Happy New Year!
Graham - thank you and Happy New Year to you too!
Oh yes, that was brilliant. Thank you Marcus. Happy New Year.
Thanks very much, Sean and wishing you a Happy New Year too.
Wonderful dear Marcus! At the end of the year, I can once again listen to such beautiful organ music here with you. It's fantastic and I enjoy it very much! I wish you a happy and blessed year 2025! Best regards, Roland
Thank you, Roland. Happy New Year to you too.
Well done, Marcus! The perfect set indeed for this fine Noël. People often don't realize that, even this kind of music looks quite simple, it's very tricky to play. You did it very well!
Thanks very much, Ralph. Indeed, all these Noëls have their tricky moments. Daquin was clearly a skilled keyboardist!
A gloriously perfect sample set for this joyous 'Noël Suisse' by Daquin in your sparkling performance: bravo, Marcus, and wishing you a very Happy New Year!
Happy New Year, Graham! And thank you for all your kind words and encouragement this year.
Perfect sample set for this Noël! This piece has been one of the Christmas staples for many organists around the world. Thank you for sharing your fabulous performance. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Marcus!
Thanks, James. It wouldn’t be Christmas without a bit of Daquin. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours!
Absolument parfait! Le même tempo que moi. Et quelle finesse! Formidable, l'orgue Romantique !
Vous êtes très gentil, merci beaucoup!
Excelente contenido. Dios lo bendiga
Wonderful performance Marcus
Thank you!
Very tastefully played and very skilfully fitted into this huge acoustic.
Thanks very much! ☺️
This sounds great on this big monster, beautifully played, Marcus!
Thank you, Ralph.
Beautifully played!!!! and beautifully produced as always!!!
Thanks, Jerry!
Lovely Marcus, it sounds really nice on the Gorlitz sample set…….can’t beat a bit of Buxtehude especially at this time of year!! :-)
I love Buxtehude, and Görlitz is great too!
Just wonderful to start in the advent season. Sounds great with the sample set. A truly masterpiece. Thank you!
Thanks very much, Markus.
It's that time again. The beautiful melodies of the Advent season can be heard. Wonderful, dear Marcus, how you give life to this chorale arrangement by Buxtehude. I wish you a wonderful Advent season!
Many thanks, Roland! Advent is one of my favourite times of the year full of great music like this; I hope you have a wonderful Advent too.
A true classic. Nice registration. Punchy but still melodic with a tremulant!! Happy new year!!
I couldn’t resist the tremulant! Happy New Year to you too!
An excellent recording! Very well played! I like it very much! Thanks for uploading! Greetings from Germany!
Thank you very much!
Sounds perfect! Lovely tempo and your videography is as always wonderful to look at!
Glad you like it!
This piece can work using a variety of registrations, but this is just sublime! Thank you!
Thanks very much, James!
Perfectly suited to the warm colours of the St David's set. Nicely shaped and registered throughout.
Thanks very much, Paul.
I love this music so much and you played it welll, Marcus!
Thank you, Alejandro!
Great stuff!, I must look up the score to this one day, it seems like English music that would also work well on our continental organs.
It would work well on a continental organ, so long as you have an enclosed division. It’s a great piece!
@ Indeed… I might try and record it for my channel soon
What a sound! Bright and with joy well done Marcus
Thank you!
Very well done, Marcus! A great idea to play this fugue with a flute 4', it perfectly fits the piece.
Thanks, Ralph. It’s hard not to love a 4’ flute and Noordbroek’s Speelfuit sold the organ to me when I downloaded the demo when Jiri released it a few years ago. It’s a beautiful stop!
Oh yes dear Marcus, I am very happy to hear you again and it is fantastic that it is this great fugue by Buxtehude. A composition that I will probably never be able to play. But I am very happy about your recording, which touches me very much. Very beautiful! Many greetings, Roland
Thank you for your kindness, Roland.
Lovely playing - the first Whitlock I ever heard as a lad! And what a set, too - a tremendous achievement by Ivan Barritt.
It is a great achievement by Ivan, a superb set. I hugely enjoyed your Howells!
19^~~ I enjoy the video you re the best l want to have a good relationship so lm going there 🎁
Thanks for letting us hear this fine organ/model (from what I can hear through this demo) with a wonderful piece, well done Marcus!
Thanks very much, Ralph!
Choosing Whitlock's beautiful 'Folk Tune' is a wonderful way to demonstrate the softer sounds of this new sample set, Marcus, and your performance is both sublime and sensitive with your gorgeous registration choices (oh! the purring 32' at the end!): bravo!
Thank you, Graham. You can't beat a good 32' flue for those final notes!
Probably one of the most popular pieces by Whitlock, often used as a musical sorbet after a big loud work. You played it so beautifully, Marcus. Thanks for also highlighting this new English sample set.
It's a beautiful piece, perfectly suited to an organ just like this.
Percy Whitlock is an unfamiliar name to me, yet his music has a particularly beautiful way of reaching the heart. Very nice dear Marcus and best regards, Roland
Thanks, Roland. Whitlock wrote some wonderful music.
Thanks Marcus, one of my favourites! Tim
Thanks very much, Tim.
Nice! 👍
Thanks, Colin.
A fine piece, always to see that a composer was inspired by earlier composers. Well played!
Thank you, Ralph. There is something Elgarian in the opening as well; Stanford was clearly a man of many influences.
A very optimistic and joyful performance of this Stanford! The Salisbury sample set is sounding fresh as it was on the first day of its release too.
Thanks, James. Salisbury is still one of my favourites despite its age and lack of surround perspectives.
This is wonderfully lively music and it is really interpreted very well by this sample. Many thanks also for all the background information on this composition. Best regards, Roland
Thanks very much, Roland!
Thanks for this recording. Playing and video is 💯 as always 👍
Thank you!
Belle musique et belles chaussettes.
Merci beaucoup!
Thanks for this lively rendition, Marcus. And great to hear good old Velesovo again. An early, but still very good set.
Thanks, Ralph. There is much to commend about the Velesovo organ.
