NO GRETNA (GREEN) NO PARTY! - More Goals, More Hits - Don't Miss Ep. 6 of THE ONLY WAY IS UP!
A grass-roots football documentary for all lovers of the beautiful game - and Scotland!
#football #footballdocumentary #soccer #scotlandfootball #gretna
In Episode 6:
The First 11 take on Tranent in the league and East Kilbride in the Scottish cup.
The Gretna Ladies debut in the league against Newton Stewart.
The Green play their final gig in Gretna for the JMA Trust.
Thanks to all who partipicated -- Jonathan Wheeler
Series Overview:
Gretna and Gretna Green form a twin community on the border with England. Gretna Green is known world-wide for weddings, having once been the destination of choice for young eloping couples from England. Gretna town was a World War 1 creation, built to serve an enormous munitions factory. Together they now host around 4,500 weddings every year, as well as a few football matches.
Gretna FC 2008 play in the Lowland League - tier 5 of the Scottish footballing pyramid - the last senior league together with the Highland League.
Gretna escaped relegation last season by a hair's-breadth, needing to beat Edinburgh University to avoid the drop. There were only 3 league wins all season. Things needed to change.
New director of football Nikki White wants to see the club get back to its community roots and bring through the best young players in the area. Vinnie Parker has been appointed manager to try and achieve that goal. Progression would be avoiding a last day relegation decider - but can the club aspire to more?
Gretna did once "live the dream" - making it all the way to the Scottish Premiership in 2007. It was a dream that many thought was doomed from the start - and so it proved. The story is touched on in this film but widely documented elsewhere on the internet.
Follow the series to experience the fortunes of the new look playing squad, and backroom staff, in the fiercely competitive Lowland league.
In this series I will also seek to provide a flavour of the towns that feature in the Lowland league as well as the culture and history that surrounds Gretna. There will also be an occasional trip into the Highland League. It's going to be a great Scottish footballing journey.
Subscribe - and share to anyone with an interest in honest football. There's a lot more to the beautiful game than multi-millionaire players and unaffordable season tickets.
Also - download the Gretna FC 2008 App - and come down to Raydale Park!!

The first time I visited Samye Ling was in 2000. I remember it so differently from that video. It has looked so developed since then. The last time I visited Samye Ling was in 2007. I hope to visit there again in the future.
Love this! Feeling the same way about the Premier League and this is such a refreshing antidote
Thanks. hope you enjoy the following episodes.
I might be off track with this but iam sure my Grandad & Gra, George Stronach & violet Roberstson has the buchers which i have been told is now a restaurant. Guess i will have a little visit tomorrow 🤔see where my dad grew up
Enjoy your visit!
Greetings from sunny California! Must have been terribly dark and cold in there! Families spent long winters in there? They must have needed fires and candles all day?!?
Yes, spending the winter in that tower would have been bleak by modern standards.
@ Even by Scottish standards! 😆
The best fish supper ever at the Cornerstone!!....I've been to Mallaig dozens of times as my parents had a caravan at Portnadoran,Arisaig for many years, a great little video!! like 78.
Cheers. Yes, the Cornerstone is great.
The wife and I happened upon this event. We have been traveling by motor home through Dunfries when we were stopped by police for the horse parade. Front row seets.
Love Gretna Green, got married here in 2019 at the Blacksmiths Cottage at Gretna Hall Hotel, not a big affair, just me and my husband and my daughter and her friend, going for an overnight on a special deal tomorrow Saturday at the Gretna Chase Hotel

I live in the Lockerbie Road not fr from the town, Dumfries is full of hidden treasures.
Yes, it is!
Gretna Green, Scottish village where young lovers from England could marry without parents’ consent.
I live there
Love kirkcudbright 👍
Props to the goalkeeper there. You could have ( missed opportunity there ) made a series about lower scottish league football, and each time you'd go on an away match with Gretna, talked about the local scenery and the local whiskies. Great stuff regardless, these cliffs look astounding
Who needs Jim when you have Ciaran 😂
Thank you to everyone who participated in this episode. Some great interviews. For proper football stories look no further than the Lowland and Highland leagues.
Lovely video thank you. Best wishes. Gérard lacey in Ireland.
Thank you Gérard!
I'm directly related to the Armstrongs
aye went there on summer holidays with family as a child...great place....
Wonderful. 👍🏻🏴
Moving here from Africa and living here for more than 30 years now we love it! It has become home we live the people ❤
That's lovely to hear. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for these, keep them coming! How on earth did some Spaniards decide to follow and stream lower division Scottish football?
It's a parody. I'm a Spanish speaker 😀
@@eyescotland Well done sir.
This gives me great Sunderland till I die vibes. Keep it up.
They're the vibes I'm looking for!
Kudos on the editing, and the tunes ain't half bad either. I'll follow this series with pleasure
class as always Jonathan pal 👏
Cheers!
6 goals against Hearts, a penalty save, and the longest goalmouth scramble ever in the Gretna Ladies game. It was a lot of fun putting this episode together!
What a score. On the bench for it too 🙂
What a season this could be!!!
Annan is not a border town ,its soth west Scotland
Well, it's near the border and is known as the Queen of the Border - so that's good enough for me. Definitely not a Borders town though!
Another good one Jonathon
In history, Annan was the first township for people crossing the land border at Gretna (before Gretna existed!) and heading West. 7 miles from the land border but was often attacked and burned by troops crossing the Solway Firth at low tide from the Cumbrian coast. So - although not on the land border, the town is on the sea border between England and Scotland.
Looks gorgeous, whisky heaven!. Lovely video thank you. Best wishes. Gérard lacey in Ireland.
Thank you! Whisky heaven indeed!

Great 1st episode
Cheers Nikki. It's going to be a great series.

Yep, coming soon!!
Will you be at Raydale on saturday ? we’re getting loads of lads there with flags 💪 building up a fan base
Yes, I'll be there. That sounds perfect. An important part of this project is to build that fanbase and the overall atmosphere around the club on match days
@@eyescotland ⚪️⚫️
Great to see these small communities thrice after they buy ( from what I understood ) the land they live on and work on. Come to think of it, as a foreigner, it's hard to wrap my head around one entity ( real estate company ? Local landlord, head of a wealthy clan dating back way back when? ) owning a whole island, where dozens if not hundreds of people have lived for decades. Keep up the good work & the community there
Yes, Eigg is a great example of community ownership. However, there are still many islands in Scotland who rely on their owner being benevolent.
Having spent a few nights in Eigg earlier this year I agree it’s a special place and people. Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories and portraying the island so well.
Thank you. Yes, it's a little diamond of an island.

Its another reason why the english don't want Scotland to be Independent ? Think of the uncommon beauty of the area. , think of the abundance of natural resources , think of the tourism money flooding into the english treasury perpetually , helping to continually regenerate London and the preferential SE ! Ah ,those english are not so silly ..are they ?
