Joe Carrell
Приєднався 13 лис 2007
Nashville based producer/mixer/recording engineer Joe Carrell has accomplished a lot in his 25 year career. 12 Grammy nominated albums mixed and/or recorded, Dove award winning songs and albums, 35 charting number ones mixed and many others recorded, Billboard top tens in multiple categories, and more. “I’m proud of those things, but that’s not what motivates me at all. What keeps me hungry is that feeling you get sitting in the chair at the end of mix and being moved...feeling like you made it everything it could be”.
The Ultimate 1073?
The Neve 1073 preamplifier/eq has been one of the absolute gold standards of the studio world since 1970. Aside from the consoles they originated in, quite a few incarnations have been released over the years. And the new 1073 SPX-D looks to be the most versatile of them all.
Maybe you need just a preamp, maybe numerous preamps in one unit, maybe you also need the EQ, maybe the optional digital IO connectivity of the SPX-D is perfect for your studio. Check out the 1073 SPX-D or the entire Neve 1073 family and see which is best fit for you!

Love this

Great tip! Thanks Joe!
I am mixing livesound for a big band for kore than 3 years now. While I am very confident about my live sound I took a lot away from this video for the mixing of the recordings of the concerts. Next one gonna be shortly before New Years Eve….very helpful vid. Thanks for sharing.
@@thomas_ger4098 awesome to hear Thomas! Best wishes on the upcoming gig 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
Hahahahah🎉
100%!! Cloudlifters for the win! Also, for someone who maybe doesn't have a good personal monitoring system in place: Rolls PM50se. Has a clean thruput, and the ability for the recording artist to adjust the mic and monitor input gains individually...Basically, an ART HeadAmp Pro "more me" feature but in a movable box. Sure, you could adjust the send levels in the DAW and there are other fantastic headphone amps/monitoring options, but this one is cheap with great quality and let's the artist be in charge of their levels without having to ask.
HwhhHello everyone, meet the goy that owns the plugins I want as real gear

Got one of these last month. And it’s the real deal but also has high quality converters. So running ADAT into a UA Apollo is crystal clear. THe only thing is missing is some NEVE software to act as a software console.

I mean, you obviously are gonna change the balance of your master track in a way that u might like better, but i dont see the point in doing this sorcery when u dont have an analog equipment which would give unique characteristics when the components are stressed out. What is the point in doing this on a digital simulation?
@@microelio Try it and find out. Obviously use digital tools that modeled the full analog circuit so the transformers, opamps, etc are part of the equation. Best wishes.
I Am ignorant about how well modeled these sims are, but to model it to that extend sounds a bit like science fiction, it would imply an insane number of calculations. Thanks for the tip, I'll try it myself
I’ll never understand how some of you will watch, but not listen 😂. Carry on tho.
It’s soooooo easy to get in that situation. BEEN THERE
I wish I liked this EQ. I have tried. For some reason it sounds kind of harsh/brittle/edgy to me. The saturation anyway. And the bands seem to sound kind of congested. I do love this tip though! A popular mastering trick too: using a big broad EQ to push into a gentle compressor. The guys at Lurssen Mastering use an EAR 825 TubeEQ (wow!) into a Manley Vari Mu. Lovely stuff
Happy holiday Joe! Love your new studio. Thank you so much for the educational videos you put out, and the partners you work with. You’re like a pig in.Sh•t😜 You seem so excited and content. Keep on Rockin in the Free World. Merry Christmas .✌🏻

just got the 1073 spx. I'm ready for the next level. You're the man Joe.
@@JosephPembroke congrats Joseph!!
For the longest time I've been using api eq plugins on my kick mics and while they're not bad, I thought I'd try the ssl instead. I find the ssl a lot smoother.
Great video, Joe! People are raving about your mixes on our Kansas City Christmas album. We appreciate your fantastic work!

Absolutely true, as a relatively new to the gear, I always wanted Neve 1073, no matter which clones are better, I just wanted the real Neve one. Work my a** off to afford this one 🥲
@@musiktetangga I hope you get one!
I can fully recommend Joe's Mixing Kayley Bishop course. Totally enjoyed it but most importantly I learned so so much from it. Joe, may I suggest a new video about your workflow with SSL controllers? Would be nice to see that especially with Pro Tools. And I need a bit of encouragement to spend $3k :) Thanks for the great content as always!

@@GloveBunniesVideos I hope he answers!
This is super helpful! How would you approach getting the side chain pumping effect that is common in electronic dance music using hardware compressors? Do the 500 series modules work for this?
@@hosedog99 Glad you enjoyed it! I have only approached that type of pumping with plug ins.
Cool piece of gear and GREAT video - as always.

I bought the previous one of these they made that wasnt digital/an interface. Really love the sound ofit and its my dream preamp, however I wish I'd had the USB option on it back then. Would have made more sense to me.

@@TrapBoiFuse561 there are some vids out there that have views without the lid. I think maybe the Neve socials even. Best wishes.
Thanks Joe. Too bad AMS Neve snubbed their customers that have the Neve SPX. Despite earlier saying there would be a digital card available and even building functions into the SPX lfor it, it never happebed. They confirmed to me via rmail "There isn’t a 1073SPX digital card designed yet and we currently don’t have any date available on when this will be ready.". Pretty disappointing when you soend so much $ on a product.
Not me watching yet another gear video of something I’ll never be able to afford

Sadly I feel like we’re shifting from Wazza’s honest reviews, to paid advertising with little constructive criticism on products. 🤷♂️
@@chrisdover8507 I didn’t feel it necessary to run drums or vocals through a 1073. We ALL know exactly what a 1073 is and what it does. It sounds like a 1073!! This was more about the explaining the extra features of the SPX-D model that may fit the needs of some of us better than other 1073 models. For example, traveling musicians that are recording keeper vocals with a laptop. This could give them the NEVE sound but still be plug and play with a laptop. I have done many (and will do many more) reviews and overviews that do include audio examples when it seems like it’s the right call.
@ it just seemed very much like a paid advertisement rather than an objective review 🤷♂️
@@chrisdover8507 i WISH Neve was sending me money 😂 I can assure you they aren’t. Happy holidays

I have the non-interface version 1073 spx and it really is a special sound. I don’t have a need for the spx-D interface model but I wouldn’t mind a couple more spx or dpx versions for drums. Have a great thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!!
I love my Neve Products and I own several. They make some of the best sounding gear I have ever used and owned, but I swear the knobs on all of their gear feel so terrible. I have the 8803 eq, 8801 channel, and a pair of 2254 rack models the knobs on all of them feel so wobbly and like they aren't tight enough. Neve said it was done that way for longevity and I haven't had a single issue, but when I still touch the knobs my brain always says "be careful" because they feel so loose. Again I have had ZERO issues and I have owned them for a long time about 10 years and they are used daily. But I'm sure someone will roast me in the comments about this, but honestly it doesn't feel great at all.
Thank you for watching Joe!
My Neve doesnt feel like that. The 48v PSU brick is the only concern I've had as it doesnt quite reach the floor. The knobs on mine are pretty stiff. (oo-er)
@@Fl4ppersMy 2254 racks have short power supplies as well. Which model do you have? The dual centric knobs are not like this. If you watch in the video when Joe is touching the output knob you can actually see what I'm talking about, its like the knobs are just loose, and can move 20-30 degrees in every direction.
