  • In episode 1, we're painting in the Paws By Zann studio, and will complete a 12" x 12" portrait of a little white dog named Harley. Painting white dogs provides a wonderful opportunity to play with lighting, and allow light and shadow to create interest in the piece.
Watch as Zann walks through her complete painting process start to finish, sharing tips and tricks along the way.

Fabulous!! Just discovered your most helpful videos. I’m an oil painter of almost 4 years and am getting ready to do a surprise painting of my great grand puppy “Gus” for my grandson. Gus is a precious long haired miniature dachshund with soo much love in his eyes and face. Thank you for providing soo much expertise and love your videos!! Just signed up for your blogs.

Great advice about darks and lights and how they are relative to each other - never really thought about that!

Thanks Violet! The lights and darks thing has been one of my biggest challenges as an artist, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Thinking about their relationship this way has really helped me to build more accurate paintings, and I love showing examples of how surprising the values can be!

Do you use water mixable oil paints! So great to see, not many artists use them.

Hi Astrid, great question - I do! I find I'll often use about half and half between the water-mixable and regular oils. I love how easy the water mixables make cleanup, but don't like how quickly they dry. Particularly the iron oxide browns, they tend to stiffen up in a day or two.
I think my favourite way to go is to use a great big tube of water-mixable titanium white, and all the other colours can be whatever pigment version I like best :)

Hi Kimberly, for sure! I'm working on a video that shows exactly that - I should have it up in a week or two and will try to remember to post a link to it here.

Can I do this in acrylics

Hi Shirlene, you can do all the colour work in acrylics, but if you want a similar blending experience you might want to try adding a slow-drying medium or try using OPEN acrylics (a slow-drying brand). Even with regular acrylics you can get a similar level of detail but theprocess and texture will be different: instead of mixing paint with the layer below, you would want to mix your colour and then apply it to the canvas.
