Mainly music in various shapes and forms, including, but not limited to, traditional folk music from Britain. Includes my own versions of songs and tunes, as well as sundry live recordings from events and festivals, and uploads from vinyl which may not otherwise be easily accessible.
Down by the seaside (Roud #1712), traditional, from George "Pop" Maynard
This is my first attempt to do a song using my new Fylde guitar. It was originally recorded from the remarkable unaccompanied singing of Sussex-based George Maynard by Peter Kennedy for the BBC in 1955. That version appears on the Topic album "Ye Subjects of England" (youtube link below). It was also chosen by Shirley Collins for inclusion on her selection of traditional folk songs from Southern England for the Topic compilation "You never heard so sweet". There is also a live version with choruses/pub audience participation (the last three lines of each verse become the chorus) on the Musical Tradition digital download "Down the Hatch/Down the Cherry Tree", which was recorded by Brian Matthews in 1960.
The Mainly Norfolk entry refers to some of the recordings subsequently made of the song, including by Shirley Collins and Andy Turner. (It omits a great version by Gordon Tyrrall on his CD "So I've Heard".)
Not to be confused with the track of the same name which appeared on Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffitti!
I would like to dedicate this song to Jules & Jo; to Mark, and to Liz & Andy.

Rakish Young Fellow (Roud #829), Devon, traditional, Chaucer Fielder
Переглядів 170Місяць тому
I first came across this song in the re-issued Halliard CD "Broadside songs", where several more verses are included, and it is sung to a different original tune by Nic Jones. However, being in Devon, I have used a local tune, collected 120 years ago by Cecil Sharp from William Nott in the village of Meshaw. Wikipedia tells me William Nott was the most prolific of all singers from whom Sharp co...
Midsummer Carol (Roud #6913), Dartmoor, traditional, chaucer fielder
Переглядів 168Місяць тому
This unusual song was collected by Sabine Baring-Gould and his associates in 1890 from the singer William Aggett at Chagford, in the heart of Dartmoor (incidentally, where I learned to walk circa 1967!) Also sourced in Cornwall. It is "unusual" because whilst being predominantly and rather mournfully in a minor key, half way through each verse it becomes major. It is also striking because the l...
The Blackbird (England, traditional, not Macca, Roud #387), chaucer fielder

I have been reading the excellent biography of the great polymath and folk song enthusiast and expert Bert Lloyd written by Dave Arthur. This song appears on the first field recording he made with BBC colleagues in 1938, in the Eel's Foot pub in Suffolk, England. I had already come across the song a few years ago in the English Folk Song & Dance Society digital archive, which includes the almos...
Blackbird (traditional), Albert "Diddy" Cook at the Eel's Foot, from the Veteran CD "Good Order"

This song is from the first field recording the great polymath and folk song expert and enthusiast A.L. Lloyd made with BBC colleagues. The recording was in the Eel's Foot pub in Suffolk, England in 1938. It was released on a CD from Veteran in 2002, alongside the other songs recorded then, and in a later session. Albert "Diddy" Cook sings the verses, and the pub regulars for this session (a re...
Lovely Joan (traditional, England, Roud #592), chaucer fielder

A well known song telling the tale of a "fine" but slow young man outwitted with ease by a "pretty fair maid" and "left to rage in the meadow green"! A familiar enough type of folk storyline, but concisely told and with a great melody. Collected in many parts of the country, and included in the original Penguin Book of English Folk songs of 1959. Both the editors, Vaughan Williams, and Bert Llo...
Birds in the spring (sweet nightingale) England traditional, George "Pop" Maynard, chaucer fielder

A traditional folk song (Roud #356) based on a recording made for the BBC in 1957 by Peter Kennedy of George "Pop" Maynard: one of the most significant of all southern English traditional singers who gained attention during the folk revival of the time. I have only modified one or two words from the original, and kept the interesting verse structure, wherein the verses get longer as the song pr...

One of the best known tracks from The Smith's penultimate LP in 1986, and a favourite with my children, whose musical tastes sometimes (but certainly not always) coincide with mine! We all saw Johnny Marr on tour last year, which lead to me revisiting my old Smiths records and CDs in earnest! I have interspersed the video with the lyrics as printed in the booklet which came with the original CD...
Robert Plant & Saving Grace "Four Sticks" (Page/Plant)

Four Sticks, from the fourth Led Zeppelin album. this was recorded at the White Rock Theatre, Hastings. The audio is fine throughout, and I think captures well how- incredibly after all these years - he still sings this complex song with incredible energy, skill, nuance, and style. However, only the last half or so of the visual footage is useable. For the first half I have used stills, before ...

The Rain Song from Houses of the Holy, the fifth Led Zeppelin album. this was recorded at the White Rock Theatre, Hastings. The audio is fine, and I think captures well how- incredibly after all these years - he still sings the song with great sensitivity and remarkable skill. However, only the light show came out on the film. (Robert not keen on people "waving torches", so not possible to wiel...

Gig at the White Rock Theatre. There with my oldest friends, from school days up the road in Cranbrook. The audio is fine, but as you may surmise, I didn't want to be indiscrete with the camera, Robert not keen on people "waving torches". And focussing on enjoying the gig, so its not stable and the field of vision obscured! I have tried to make it interesting to watch anyway by incorporating ph...

Saving Grace tour, Hastings, England, 23rd March 2024, finale. The first song is recognised as a Child Ballad (#95) and also included in the Roud Folk index (#144). There are very large numbers of variants of this song found in England, Ireland, the US, and also in Germany, Romania and beyond. In the US, various versions were saved thanks to black performers. How Page and Plant sourced the song...

PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS SECTION FOR INFO ON THE CAMPAIGN This video has been made to raise awareness that a glorious stretch of open Kent countryside is now threatened by wrong headed "development" proposals. This unspoilt green space, easily accessible to many due to proximity to Canterbury and the University of Kent, has foolishly been earmarked as a potential site for large ...

The lyrics and the melody alike are hybrids ...

Wonderful song!!!
Yes, George Maynard was an inspirational singer of old traditional songs. Quite often name checked, but not frequently enough listened to!
Saw Richard and Linda . Wish I could have seen Him with Fairport.
Amazing musicians, amazing song.
Sung with great feeling we'll done.
thanks, that's very generous!
Great to keep these old Kent songs and histories alive
thanks and agreed!

Это не живое выступление Р.Планта, а студийное и наложенные эффекты зала и шум публики. Не хорошо так обманывать! This is not a live performance by R. Plant, but a studio performance with superimposed audience effects and audience noise. It's not good to deceive like that!
👍💙💛
What melodious voices they have!!!Well done!!!🌹🌹🌹
Thanks. Yes Suzi Diaz in impressive too, albeit a few years younger 😂
Brilliant!! The guitar and singing are wonderful and it’s such a great poem!
Thanks. I never play this any more but maybe should do so again! Worked hard on the guitar part.
I saw Plant and Page in Pensacola, cant remember what year, but the two chicks that opened the show, playing harps, stole the show.
Lmfao 😂😂😂
They are wonderful !!!🌹🌹🌹🌹
Wow. Have just stumbled onto this. Thought I'd heard all Nic's performances on UA-cam and elsewhere - until now. Amazing. I think this version encompasses absolutely everything Nic was "all about" - the brilliant emotive singing, the wonderful (simple, but at the same time complex) off-the-beat staccato guitar part, the seamless melding of the two and the alarming ease of which he delivers them both! ...and as you say, all sorts of nods to other genres. This is by far the best version of Barrack Street to my mind. I do still love the Tony Hall and Nic track on the Eggs album though! Thanks for putting this on. And if you have anything else similarly wonderful - please let me know!
hi Steve, I have assembled a playlist of nic jones material, I'd be surprised is there wasn't something else on here which interested you too! Here is the link ua-cam.com/play/PLVhFFZVVe2mb7vC0qiCtRKFCCiV3qnvh5.html&si=RPDoTa6EOdtaAA6C
PS Steve Turner was a regular visiting artist to our Folk Club up here in Cheshire!
Wonderful to hear Robert's voice sounding matured and still strong yet subtle and clear here now in 2024... Thank you so much for your efforts presenting this video and sharing the music!
very well put. Exactly!
Thanks for sharing this beautiful version.
Happy to, it was a great gig!
Proud to be an old Rocker here.
5-0 but they acquitted themselves well. Clearly not deserving to win technically, but as a community club they didn't have money and resource advantages behind them. A great spirit, well done to the Stones!
Thanks for this!

Nice!
Thanks. This is the one where I was struggling to use the capo on the mando. In the end though - when applied in a very particular way - the cheap & cheerful capo worked ok! After all that fuss!
A masterpiece
👏
Excellent - new one for me - thanks for posting.
oh damn this is a great version
Listening to it obsessively
You betcha, one of my favourites.👍🏝️🇨🇦

Amo este tema es hermoso pasan los años y cada vez suena mejor Plant hizo una formidable carrera solista dejando un montón de temazos y este disco que junto con Fate Nación son dos puntos muy altos
Неперевершений Роберт Плант !!!

Nice!
Thanks! I really put a lot into this one, so appreciate the feedback!!
...my heart still breaks every time I hear this...what a haunting video, too. THANK YOU for sharing this precious gem with us!
It definitely has that same affect on me...makes me think about failed relationships 😢
Melody and steel guitar, awsome
Gerald “Jezz” Woodroffe played keyboards. Not Jeff.
Great players Robert like variation to who he plays with.
@@TheIggypop1 understood, quite aware of his history with various players since going solo.
cool...
Played this song in my younger days driving for hours between Sydney and Gold Coast on the Pacific Highway, along with many other fabulous tunes from the 1980s. Those were great days 🙂
