I would probably choose the Hiawatha or Yellowstone.
I hope for a new build of this engine. The collection of Berkshires preserved in the US just feels incomplete without one.
its nice seeing some CGW love
PRR had really lost its way by the end of WWII. Here was a massively expensive and powerful high speed freight locomotive for a railroad that didn't run high speed freight trains. No wonder they went broke.
Interstingly, PRR owned 1/3 of N&W and had influence over the company....but PRR steam was somewhat more antiquated than N&W steam.
Wow!
Big boy i knew it
While the mikado handled the road’s freights for years, the main reason these engines were bought for the new expansion to Connellsville (which opened in 1930-32) Also good luck trying to find what chime whistle the class had.
Can you imagine one of these restored and running anywhere in the U.S.? Would make a lot of towns, cities, and people very upset; not to mention cost the Union Pacific tons of money to run one of these units.
🔥Beautiful Beasts!🔥
Almost sixteen minutes of narration and not photo one. Fool me once shame on you.
Union Pacific coal turbine was my favorite experimental locomotive.
I have been trying to find the specs for this locomotive all over Google to no avail. I wish there was a scale model of the P38 more widely available for hobbyists & enthusiasts alike. Yet, I'm still left with one unanswered question: which locomotive is larger & heavier? The Soviet P38 or the Union Pacific Big Boy? Too bad none of the P38s survived for historical preservation.
The 4-8-4 was NOT limited ro much of anything. On october 17th 1944, a CB&Q O-5 ran an 82 car mail train unassisted. The timken 4 aces locomotive is credited with starting and pulling a coal train weighing 9,864 tons on her own while on the C&O. Even the GS class engines with their high drivers had a very good factor of adhesion. Thats what its all about with steam, the factor of adhesion. It also greatly helps if the engine has proper spring equalization too. A GS-4 could handle a 22 car coast daylight then comfortably handle a heavy drag freight in or out of the San Joaquin valley or LA basin and they did too. Though there arent many photos or videos of it, SP's philosophy was if it could be put on a train at that second get it the hell down the line with that train on its ass and do it NOW! The ATSF "heavy mountains" as they called their 4-8-4s could handle raton and Cajon pass no problem with a 15 to 20 car passenger train or get down on their knees with a long heavy drag and take it in stride.
What's the actual length of the Southern Pacific AC-9 locomotives?
The Alleghany officially put down 7500 hp
Thank you
Cool
Where is the super thank button?
was tyhe alleghevy a steam turbine loco
I would go for the NKP s. Class Berkshire.
Sorry, but at 1:43 that’s a Q1 in the photo.
Most of the articulated steam engines were not run to capacity from the engineers, they were resented because crews being replaced 2 to 1
Norfolk and Western made the best steam engines. They were produced in the Roanoke shop, and there was nothing more beautiful than the Jays
One item… it is NOT Pierre, but rather Pere. This is a French word for “Father” as in the Roman Catholic priest Pere Marquette. And this is a common mistake for those who are unfamiliar with the name.
wow
I think diesel absolutely outperformed steam on grades. The simple reason being, you can hook up 9 or 12 of the things or however many it takes to grind up the hill at 12 miles per hour. All on one crew. Diesel will eke over the top with less horsepower than steam, and you can easily add on as much horsepower as you need. With any train, you need to schedule as enough power per ton to pull and start on the worst grade on the route, with a margin. With steam, that means you give the train a huge amount of power, because anything that'll start the hill will also blast the train at freeway speed. With diesel, you can specify a power to make any grade but still only top out at 35. Since railroads do not care at all about speed, they're happy with that deal. More tonnage per horsepower. Steam pulled better in practice because the minimum acceptable horsepower was higher. And yeah, one Allegheny will out-pull any single diesel, but it still loses because you'll never run a train with 5 Alleghenys, but 8 diesels is just Tuesday. Scalability and performance is 100% tied to cost, otherwise you really would just quintuple-head with Big Boys and pull anything anywhere. Diesel scales better. If the microchip had been invented before internal combustion, allowing one guy to run and fire 6 steam engines, dieselization may not have happened. After accounting for the cheaper up-front purchase price of 1 steamer vs 4 diesels, and the cheap fuel they used, running costs for steam weren't THAT terrible. The NYC found their Niagara compared pretty favorably in lifetime cost. But you just can't beat 1 crew doing the work of 4.
H-8 and Y6 were designed for 2 different jobs. H-8 can run 60+ mph and was designed to haul trains at high speed though it was never operated at speed it was designed. Y6 was designed for drag freight not fast freight (50 mph on a compound articulated, kiss the running gear goodbye). To me your comparison should have been between the H-8 and the class A.
What did this in, ultimately....was the diesel!
Dare to dream!
People who say this engine was run at speeds near 130 mph overlook one fact that any veteran engineer would have been fully aware of. The mainline track, even the Fort Wayne Division racetrack, was really only maintained to maybe 110 mph! Exceeding that was taking a risk I doubt most would have dared.
1:13 What do we need the Lionel ad here for ? I'd venture to guess anyone serious enough to want to learn about the real Allegheny loco wouldn't have interest in the toy 4-4-2, and a pretty bad toy at that !! What is it in this video for ? 5:19 Here's a decent model but with a derailed pony truck ! 6:51 Do we really need another Lionel pic with their giant flanges accompanying a 1:1 scale documentary ? whether or not you use a script doesn't seem to matter. But leave out the unnecessary filler pics.. You asked..
What’s that coming? Looks like a train. Egad, it is a train!
Total agreement with you!! I read that the shareholders were getting 6% dividends as opposed to 1/2% from the surrounding companies. It was just the availability of special parts as everyone else wasn`t demanding them any more - that is what i read. Why couldn`t the N.& W buy the company and make their own? Then we would have the U.S.A. leading in modern steam traction (with, no doubt, future developments) and with world leading maintenance to boot!
Diesels where already on the way btw the time S-2 issues would been worked out... PRR really should electrified the whole main line they had one best electric engines ever in the GG1
N&W y6b has always been my favorite locomotive. I wish they would build a new one like, the company building the PRR T1. That would be a dream come true.
nice video
In current day could a modern design steam locomotive be paired with an engine that captures braking energy to help pull the train when it’s not braking or going down a hill. This 2nd engine would not have an engine on it.
Fantastic locomotives! Terrific video!
Sorry but where is the Britain steam loco u only talk like America is the only country in the world
Stop calling it a challenger its not a challenger.. challenger was a up locomotive
This is a review of wheel arrangements more than locomotives, or locomotive classes.
This is just my honest opinion. Back then, the M-1's should've been classified or re-classified as "Cumberlands" instead of "Big Emmas" named after the Cumberland Mountains where the L&N's rail line travels through which is also where mostly the M-1's where used hauling heavier freight and Passenger trains.
I love the northern! Unfortunately I don’t have any😭
It numbs ones very mind... In how one of the worlds greatest, very well built steam locomotives. That one, NOT even one was saved... What tragic loss of history...
Diesels where preferred by the government and sleazy politicians being bribed by highway construction companies and builders of diesels
Got to ride behind this steel steed in Pullman standard from middle Iowa in 1949.
We have a 4-6-2+2-6-4 GF Garratt at my local rail yard, although non operational here’s hoping that No.2380 gets refurbished, just like our Class 3BR “Maureen” which ran under her own power just 2 days ago.
It's a tie of course
Without the music would be better ...
