The Great Railroad Roundhouse Explosion of 1912
Interesting! I too favored the Y6b over Allegheny! The Allegheny got a label of slippery despite its Adhesion factor. Drag service the A was great, fast freight I’d choose the Big Boy.
I've ALWAYS liked the "Y" series. To me, they were just as good and powerful as the "Big Boys" and the "Challenger" of UP. They had a much longer service life, etc. And Norfolk Western held on to their STEAM engines to the bitter end and went kickin' & screamin' and finally gave way to diesel!!
Steam definitely Steam
Too much unsubstantiated speculation.
on this type of loco , you have 4 cylinders using water. that is double the water use of a normal loco. if your water pump ( on the fireman's side ) isn't working to provide a continuous flow of water , the engineer will be notified by the fireman that " we're losing water , turn on your injector " , or he can ask him to back off on the throttle while they try to remedy the problem. IF you already have low water in the glass , the engineer may not want to shut off the throttle entirely as it will cause the water level to drop. the bottom gauge cock on the water glass , BY LAW , is supposed to be 3 inches from the highest point on the crown sheet at minimum. the low water alarm is supposed to be at the same level or higher . this is supposed to give the crew some warning BEFORE the top of the crown sheet is exposed. with the injectors i have worked on ( nathan , sellers ) lifting and non-lifting , they can become contaminated with scale due to hard water , the check valves can be leaking or the strainer from the tender tank can be full of junk causing the pump or the injector to fail. you never know what the condition of the loco was in when they put it in storage . the attitude of management , i can guarantee , was " get this loco out on the train and get it out of town , no matter what the problem is" . the pressure on the engine crew to perform was heavy , even with the union on your side. remember too , these were 16 hour days . on the UP , they stored their newer locos like the 800s and the challengers on the storage tracks with water still in the boilers , not caring what the condition was. the attitude of management was " these old junkers are going to be used only temporarily , so don't waste any resources you don't need to". i have run modern local trains with power that had numerous problems that i would write up . when i went to use it the next day , the same old problems were there , unrepaired. superintendents were telling their local managers to " keep the trains running " and don't delay the railroad. it is sad that the crew paid with their lives because of the " work culture " of the railroad at that time .
Well done. Thanks!
I'd start my railroad company with the N&W 1233
All built inhouse
GREAT VIDEO did t know about this locomotive
It's a true shame that the L&N didn't preserve any of their m 1 class 2-8-4 "Big Emma" locomotives, these are arguably the most famous and best performing steam locomotives that the L&N ever operated. These "Big Emma" types were the most expensive class "Berkshire" locomotives ever built and at least one of these engines should have been saved from being scrapped, this is a fantastic representative of L&N steam power and are an attractive locomotive class.
18,000 tonnes downhill. That needs to be pointed out.
The 8000 had indirect walschaerts. Interesting!
Union Pacific Should have Built a 4-12-12-4 Steam Locomotive.
I am from Ohio and I think there is also another 2-8-4 Berkshire that was a NKP engine at Conneaut, Ohio on static display. Sadly it has been on display outside in the weather for probably over 70 years
Garratts were not really very popular in Europe-as you say, some n Britain. Spain and Netherlands (?). Most were exported to and used iin Africa, India, Asia Asa Australia and so on.
I think it would have be revolutionary if it was used and experimented properly.
I have often doubt that diesel is stronger than stream. I agree that diesels are cheaper and not efficient in many ways.
Turbans should have been used today for locomotive power. Turban power has been the standard for jets since 1955, I really wonder why turbans are not used today. 2025 you would think that turban power would be improved for the railroad industry 🎉
The E-4's were not used on Twin Cities service because they were too heavy for certain bridges north of Chicago and into Wisconsin. The E-4's were used on the line west to Omaha and back. The semi-streamlined 1620 and 1620 locomotives illustrated in your video were used on the Rochester 400 as their weight was within bridge capacity.
After losing an ebay auction, the winner balk at paying for a slightly damage 2-6-6-6 HO scale and I contacted the manufacturer who said it's only cosmetic and when they begin production on the newer model, they would have the parts to repair it. I have my favorite steam locomotive in my collection :D
I’d argue with the amount of resources you need to produce a diesel electric, such as copper, steel gold rubber diesel cost more than steel, coal and water
Another fun fact about the Allegheny is that you could fit the boiler of the Big Boy inside of the Allegheny's boiler!
Nice video. My three favorite articulated engines (in no particular order) are: the C&O H-8 Allegheny, the DM&IR 2-8-8-4 and the SP AC-9 2-8-8-4.
Where is the super thanks button. I do t see it
Do you have to be subscribed to be able to hit it?
Great video! Big Boy 4005 was extensively repaired after this accident and was returned to normal service.
If this class of engines had a superheater in it and a larger firebox this thing would be a coal hauling monster as if it already wasnt one
I hope the dude is okay...
Interesting the Big Boy had higher horsepower
The GTEL turbines, 10k plus HP.
The Taupo Totara Timber company in New Zealand is a 3'6" 2-4-4-2 Alco built Mallet preserved at GVR near Auckland.
Similar to the Skookum locomotive, but a little bit bigger.
Going off memory- the original Pioneer Zephyr did the Chicago-Denver run in about 15 hrs. The eye opening part was the fuel cost- as I recall it was around $10
Did they have a nuclear powered train!?? Omg
Thank you for this content ❤
I just got my own model of 9000
The Union Pacific Northern Pacific Southern Pacific and The DMIR all should Have Built Wheel arrangements That are the 4-28-28-28-28-28-4 Wheel Arrangement.
Great Video! I recently bought a 2-4-4-2 in On30 to run on my club layout, the Moose Creek Logging Company. The history makes this engine even more unique. A great look into it's history.
That thing is nuts. It intimidates me
The NP had the first yellowstones, hence the name. Ive seen the one in the Duluth museum, and the one at Two Harbors. Amazing machines!.
Thank you for making and posting this video. My grandfather was a yardmaster for the B&O. I saw the magnificent EM-1 locomotives run as a young boy. Thanks for the memories.
The N&W did NOT fuck around with steam, and I love that
I just bought my first ho scale AC-9 brass locomotive last month. The town I grew up in had a Southern Pacific yard and that's the main road I saw all the time. I had to have this in my collection.
Worked on the Milwaukee Road for 42 years Ending with the CP Love it ❤
I still question what whistle this thing has
😊
Where'd you go bro😢
The iron ore used to make the steel that went into some of the Big Boys could have been hauled to the Lake Superior ore docks by Yellowstones.
Retire and preserve it.
Alot of people may love steam engines more than diesel engines, but I prefer diesel engines over steam engines because they're stronger, far more efficient to run requiring much less maintenance to operate, and are cooler to me, especially the different variety of train horns usually being louder on average compared to steam train whistles, and I really enjoy the geometrical shape design that alot of modern diesel engines often seen running nowadays have. I was born when diesel trains already took over steam trains becoming the king of the rails years ago anyways, and both are equally iconic types of trains in their own right. Steam is popular with successful franchises, such as Thomas & Friends, and historic railroads like Strasburg Railroad often doing excursions with the steam engines pulling them. Diesel however is iconic with class 1 freight railroads including CSX, Norfolk Southern, BNSF, and Union Pacific. Also in many Hollywood movies diesel engines have been represented plenty of times. I still definitely enjoy steam engines too. Though diesel engines will always be the superior types of locomotives to steam engines, despite steam having its few advantages over diesel.🛤
Can't run blue steam least amount in a boiler maybe sight glass problem ?
