1974…the year I got my first board at age 12 and learned to surf. I am a child of the psychedelic 70’s generation, the short board revolution, before pro surfing and sponsors, when surfing was just for fun…

TAKE ME BACK!!! Surfing seemed to make a lot more sense back then, at least to me.

I love how Hakman loses it but still manages to get the board up and over the wave. He saved himself a long swim.

That is better than watching any surf contest . Ide rather watch these stylists back then before watching anything later than 1985. The lines and style was just different. These guys were core. No kid grows up without surfing without a leash .

Amazing footage and edit! What a era. This is what surf adventure dreams are made of.

My first trip to Indonesia was in 1979. I had my 29th birthday in Bali. During my stay in Bali someone told me about the surf camp at Grajagan Bay. It sounded intriguing. It was up for sale and I had the dough at that time. My life sure would have been different had I bought the surf camp. At the time I just didn’t want to be tied to running a camp and dealing with the Indonesian bureaucracy. I enjoyed my stay in Bali. Sailed across the Badung Strait in a prahu to the island of Nusa Lembongan and caught killer waves there in front of the village run by chief Tarsin. On my second trip to Indo in 1981 I made it to the island of Nias and caught lots of great waves at Lagundi Bay before heading back to Sumatra, then Java and finally Bali again. Indo was a good warm up for North Shore action on Oahu which is where I’d head to come December. Lots of great memories. I was very fortunate to have been able to surf all those places.

I was lucky to surf Bali back in 1987, a teenager hitching a ride with fellow aussie surfers. Back then Canguu was empty.
