watching this for the first time (12/15/24). Halfway through it's already my all-time favorite surf clip. Stills' voice and that Buffalo Springfield ripping guitar. Wow! Looks like this is an Aussie production. Great job. I'm from So Cal and it's images like this that made me want to get off my chalk wheel Black Knight & ride a rebel surfboard in 1973 FOR SUREs!!!👏👏🍻🍻😎😎🤙🤙✌✌🌊🌊
Haha. We can't go back unfortunately, but there spirit is still out there. Just have to go looking a little further! ua-cam.com/users/shortsHXN5ndth-Sc
Fantastic seeing these surfers from an incredible period for the sport at both Pipeline, and Sunset. So many incredible surfers along the north shore in those days. Thanks for bringing back the memories of my childhood growing up on Oahu. A remarkable period indeed. Aloha and Mahalo, C A
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the clip. Please subscribe for more. We're re-scanning everything we find at an archival quality so these memories will be there for generations to come :)
1974…the year I got my first board at age 12 and learned to surf. I am a child of the psychedelic 70’s generation, the short board revolution, before pro surfing and sponsors, when surfing was just for fun…
It's a great film. We reckon it deserved a far bigger profile. Phil was an excellent filmmaker. The full film is available to buy or rent here vimeo.com/ondemand/awinterstale
That is better than watching any surf contest . Ide rather watch these stylists back then before watching anything later than 1985. The lines and style was just different. These guys were core. No kid grows up without surfing without a leash .
We love watching to too! We have about 150 hours of footage scanned and restored and will be uploading over the next ...year or two. Can't wait to share. So much good stuff! Please subscribe and share to help us build the channel and keep it going. Thanks for the comment. Gives us the enthusiasm to keep at it!
I had watched maybe a minute and thought "no leg ropes?", so rewatched and then the Sunset section totally confirmed it. Some of the tricks to push the board through. Still like to take my leash off in small surf. A 'pure" experience no wettie no leash.
I learned to surf without a leash and I still have a vicious backside kick out but my frontside is very weak. I don't know exactly what that means except that I must be heel centric. Happy subscriber, BTW.
I grew up with all these guys as my idols, especially BK, Reno, and Hakman. SoCal Newport/Huntington surf rat, had to stop 3 years ago, bad hip etc. What a great video, thanks so much.
I'm 66 and started surfing regularly in 1969 when I was 11, and it was great! Surfing back then wasn't commercialized like it is now, and there was plenty of waves for everyone.
For true - many of us were anti-establishment - anti-commercial. We surfed all the time, but never ever would consider it "training." Training was for jarheads.
Single fins with the wide-point-forward. You carved off the rails to turn, and you had to move your feet. Not like with thrusters where you just gotta wiggle your hips.
Wow, that girl on the beach had something called a newspaper. I remember those. Comic strips, Dear Abby, horoscope and only slightly biased editorials.😂
Great single fin surfing. I always wonder why Simon Anderson NEVER put a patent on hit Thruster three fin design!!??? Simon would be a Billionare now! 🥴
Right On, I was 14 in'74 ripping up the South Shore. It doesn't seem like 50 years ago! But it is and I still feel the STOKE✌❤🤗
so much style and grace
Style for decades!!
Four LEGENDARY names! I remember them well. Eddie Went. Let's never forget.
And there’s more than four legends in the clip!!
@@surffilmarchive Amen to that!!
awesome era - loved Midget, BK, Hackman, Reno. Eddie. classic styles & lines.

TAKE ME BACK!!! Surfing seemed to make a lot more sense back then, at least to me.

Pre leg leash .. unreal … true watermen 🙏🙏
Must have been super fit! Thanks for watching. Please subscribe. There’s plenty more to come.
I love how Hakman loses it but still manages to get the board up and over the wave. He saved himself a long swim.
We love those pre-leg rope kickouts! Make sure you subscribe for more clips like this. Thanks :)

Amazing lifestyle

Thought I saw Gary Chapman on a wave at Pipe. R.i.p., he was incredible.
Is that turtle beach 0:07 haha
Love it
First surf movie I ever saw.
It's a good one. The full film is available to buy or rent here - vimeo.com/ondemand/awinterstale
I love the buffilo springfeild in the back
Never be anyone as cool as Lopez
He’s hard to beat for cool!
I miss 1970s beach girls.
the girl at 00:53

...one world...one fin...no leash...

Almost all of them riding lightning bolt ⚡️

It's still out there. Just gotta go looking for it! :)
I still ( sometimes) ride my 7.0 single fin Challenger with no leash to keep me humble
Haha! Time has humbled us…leash or no leash. Enjoy it!
Looks to me that those are actually the best boards for pipe
There's something pretty about them!
The grommets came with thrash
Looked a lot like Jerry Lopez on some of those Pipe waves?
Yeah, also Rory Russell and the pride of Laguna Beach, Mike Armstrong charging.
@@artlover1477 So many legends in this clip!!
garanz is was Lopez.

I wonder what Dog the Bounty hunter looked like as a grom back then?
Isn’t the guy at 0:57 Jerry Lopez?
It is. Too many legends in one clip to namecheck them all :)
Great Video. Was Jamie's Dad out there ?
"No leashes!" Folks
In 64 learning to surf, swam to the beach countless times.
Good learning curve!! :)
Leashes allowed way to many Wannabe 🏄🏻 They all would of Quit after a couple "Wipeouts!"
The leash allowed many to 🏄🏻 that would of normally Quit! 💪🏻🤙🏻
Pretty sure the first surfer in this is Rory Russell.
I don't know how I haven't noticed the similarities between Tommy Carroll and Jeff Hakman's surfing. Maybe TC was influenced by Hakman?

Too nice a guy maybe!
No mobile phones ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
only guy missing is Bill Barnfield
