I just love your videos!! Thank you for taking the time to share your talents with us. One question....for the piece from the collar to the cinch - you indicated that 10" is the length for the 34" breast collar. Does this length need to be shorter for smaller collars, and longer for longer collars? I'm needing to make a 36", but need a little extra guidance. Thanks in advance.
The problem making breast collars is that there are so many variables. If you have a collar that already fits your horse I suggest measuring that for the correct size of the pieces. Otherwise, lengthen the side piece by an inch. Of course, your hardware can vary in size too so. Good luck!
Smaller sizes need shorter side pieces. Check the size of your hardware before making adjustments.
Hi Caroline - I have a question. A friend has asked me about the cinch buckles being directly on the horse's body, while other cinches are padded at that point of contact. Is it a problem for the horse to have the buckle "digging" into the body when cinched up? Just wondering as I have not seen one Mohair cinch with buckle padding. Thanks in advance
I’ve never heard that it’s a problem. Not all commercial cinches have padding. I think that’s a new thing. I’ll see if anyone else has a better answer.
Thank you for this series, Caroline. I have been watching your videos of weaving and cinch making over and over. I am a cowfolk type and grew up ranching, and now that my body can’t do the hard labor anymore I wanted ways to keep making stuff for ranching. Weaving and cinch making is great for it. I just built a 4ft loom to weave on. Do you use cotton or wool for your warp most of the time? I’m trying to stick to 100% wool for functional saddle blankets, but I’m not sure if cotton warp would be better or if it even makes a difference. Thanks!
A lot of people are particular about their warp but I’m not. I make sure that it’s good quality and exceptionally strong. If you’re using wool for your weft it might be wise to stick to wool for the warp. That way the whole blanket will sort of felt together. Glad you’re enjoying weaving. Keep it up!
Thank you for posting this showing the steps up close and clearly! I have a mini loom and the 2-string tutorial for that loom is very dark with dark twining and so difficult to see what you're doing. This tutorial is perfect for an absolute beginner like me.

Your videos are SO very helpful. I can't figure out how to do a single vertical line (over one weft thread) using the interlock technique. Any helpful tips? Many thanks.
It’s very hard to do a vertical line over one warp. Is that what you mean? I’m not sure what you mean.
Thank you so much for your quick response. So many of the Navajo rugs I see have what appears to be a single vertical line. Maybe it is really using 3 warps with the outer two being “wrapped” by the different colors?
It’s probably over three warps but could be over two. It’s hard to do with less than two and easiest with three.

1. Why not use the rods on the sides? 2. Does it matter if you have an even or odd number of pegs/pins?
You can learn to make straight edges without the rods but use them if you want. Doesn’t matter if you have an odd or even number.
Do you have a video for a 27 strand cinch
No because UBraidIt has a good one on those cinches.

Hi Caroline, I just discovered your video. I am excited to try this. What type of cording did you use for your warp strands? Is it cotton? Also, you are one amazing lady with a drill press!!
You can use cotton or wool. I use rug weight wool but have also used mop cotton. Sometimes I spin four single ply worsted weight yarn together and that makes an ideal warp yarn.
Where can I find the material to weave?
Panhandle Leather for the hardware and 4 ply or UBraidIt has everything. Both sell online.

On this loom you put the pegs back in above the top bar and the weaving slips right off. I’m not sure I understand the last question. The warp is a continuous warp so it doesn’t come undone. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching. Enjoy your weaving. Let me know if I can help you.
Hello, Thank you so much for all of your videos. They are helpful. I’m having entwining on my mini loom. It is warped with 12/6 seine twine and I was using 8/4 carpet warp for the entwining. However, I am not able to pull it through the end pins the way you demonstrate on your video. It is too thick to pull through the loom pins. What should I use to warp the loom and also what should I use for entwining in order for it to fit through the pins. What would you recommend? Many thanks
Try cotton crochet thread for the warp. You can always switch to wool when you have some experience. For the end twining use a two ply fairly thin yarn. Just make sure it’s very strong so it doesn’t break when you’re pulling it through. Some people use the warp thread for the end twining.
Hi , and thanks for all your videos, very helpful. I’m having trouble with the end twining on my mini loom. I am using 12/6 seine twine for the warp, and 8/4 carpet warp for the end twining. I can’t pull the ends of the warp and twining between the loom pins, it is too tight. So what should I warp the mini loom with, and what should I use for the end twining? What would you recommend? Do you know how to do the raised flowers and feather designs? It looks like the 2ply is on top.
Often the raised flowers are embroidered on with two ply yarn. It's a simple backstitch that looks like outlining but it's on top of the cinch. If you need to learn the basics of embroidery there's lots of UA-cam videos on that topic. Hope that helps.

Yes, leave it in until it's no longer useful.
I accidentally bent a few of my pegs what should I do??
Gently straighten them. I use a screwdriver and press them back into place. Be gentle and just get them back in line.
Is the Navajo loom and cactus flower loom the same?
No. The Cactus Flower loom is an improvement on the Navajo loom. It has self tensioning and easy warping. The end result is the same.
Would this work with even warps
It would be a lot harder and it wouldn’t be balanced.
At mark 10:55, when you are increasing the light gray, is the red and increased portion of gray in the same shed? If so, how do you cover the lice?
They are in the same shed for a short distance. If you beat it down hard the warp won’t show.

I am finding this impossible. I just don't get it. I think I'll just go back to doing the interlocking version which I can do. I will go back to this when I am more confident in this style of weaving. Thank you for the book and these videos. Without them I would be totally lost.
I usually teach the turned joint first as most people find it easier to learn. However if you are already doing the interlock, just keep on doing it! I leave it to the advanced techniques but you’re already there!
It took me four days to figure it out, a lot of wasted yarn, hours watching videos and reading written instructions. I finally got a sample that looks acceptable. I still think I will use the other method.

Because it has to stretch between the buckles one more time than the other end. That makes it an odd number of warps.

Hi Caroline, I wonder if you can help me with a suggestion. I’ve made an error and have woven quite a long way from both ends but going over two and under two between the warps. So it should still hold together but it’s not going to meet properly in the middle. I am considering switching to over one under one. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
In twining there are no mistakes, only design elements! You can do anything you want. You can even alternate the over two with the over one. If there is room put in a few rows of under one. Then you can switch to under two again.

FINALLY!! A video that shows twining while pulling towards yourself! This is the same way I do it. I have seen so many videos that show twining by pushing up! Where do you get your mohair?
The eight ply I get from Panhandle Leather. I get the two ply from UBraidIt.com as Panhandle only has undyed two ply. Hope that helps.

Hey there quick question! I miscalculated the first loop and my end weave pieces are off. One is too short, what’s the best way to correct this?
Sorry I missed your comment and just now saw it. That's a problem that is hard to correct. You can weave the ends in as far as you can and then tuck the end and start a new piece. Just like you would in the design areas. I hope that makes sense.

Well i am sad. This is my first attempt. I measured 3 times and cut 17ft. It didn't seem like i had much left over for the end weave. Sure enough, i barely have enough to make it across let alone move onto the next step. I measured my strands length between my rings and i am at 13.5inches. I dont know what i did wrong.
I only have 11in left for the end weaving. I'm hoping I can tie extra 2ply onto these to make it work
Hummmm.... if you cut 17' you should have had 2' at each end to weave back in. I measured between my rings and had 13 1/4" so we are close. Are you pulling your yarn pretty taut as you're stringing the warp? Since you only had about one foot you may be able to make it halfway across. I think I'd run those yarns as far as I could and then run the ends back in. Then add on your two ply and see if you can tie them in. Maybe I should make a video on how to do that as someone just said they did a cinch and ran out of yarn at the ends!

I am wondering how many total yards of the core spun alpaca is needed for a 24 x 36 size rug. Thank you for your wonderful videos
Hummmm. Are you buying the alpaca? If so it comes in very large rolls and you would use most of one roll for a 2 x 3 rug. The total amount you need depends on how tight you weave. Of course the tighter the weave the more yarn you use. A looser weave would use less.

Do you start with 100 ft of 8 ply for the breast collar? Do you have a standard breast collar horse sized pattern you go off of?
There’s a materials list at the end of the video. There’s several UA-cam videos on sizing a breast collar to fit your horse. I just do the average size.
