Drone Crop Scouting With Taranis Part 4...And 5?!
With flights One, Two, and Three all largely following the same style of video, I wanted to change things up a little bit for this one. Today, we're going to compare flights Four and Five from the perspective of what I am seeing on my computer.
There are a bunch of management decisions that need made just between the two fields of corn at the File Hill and West Files! Let me show you just how much data I can access from my computer, and how much more efficiently I can make management decisions to care for every acre. Today, we go on a journey breaking down the decisions I have already made, to decisions I still need to make as the drought in our area intensifies. From weeds, bugs, nutrients, diseases, and drought damage...I can see everything and make data-driven decisions all from the comfort of my home while maybe or maybe not wearing pants...

Yield Mapping Saves Money...And The Environment
Переглядів 439 годин тому
Yield mapping is a tool, which until recently, has been underutilized by our farm. By using yield mapping, we can generate prescription map applications of fertilizer, and seed. This guarantees that the acres that can support full rates of seed/fertilizer are getting the most they can effectively handle, while at the same time, not over applying product to acres that could never handle full rat...
Oh No...The Baler...Its Broken!

This day got expensive in a hurry...Our Vermeer 605 Super M round baler is now down for the count. One of the tension rollers had a catastrophic failure and collapsed inwards pulling all the belts with it. Today we're going to dive into what caused this to happen, what we're going to do about it, and take a closer look at the 605 N Select that my Vermeer dealer is loaning me while ours is in th...
Wheat Made Money This Year!
Переглядів 7014 днів тому
This was quite possibly the best wheat harvest of recent memory. Coming off of 3 consecutive bad years, it's nice to finally have a win again. For us, these wheat yields were nothing short of incredible. We mainly planted 3 different varieties. A Four-Variety Blend of Bigfoot, HG Force, T-154, and T-158, Bigfoot, and Monument. We even have a field that has all three wheat choices planted right ...
Bugs And Weathermen Destroyed My Soybeans

Today we find ourselves out checking on the soybeans I replanted in the roller crimped triticale. While there are some nice even stands throughout the field...the same cannot be said for others. I don't know at this point what has been more damaging to this soybean field; the grasshoppers, locusts, and chinch bugs...or the weathermen who can't make an accurate rain prediction to save their live...
Drone Crop Scouting with Taranis Part 3!

This is by far one of my favorite scouting flights! Flight Three is a treasure trove of information. We're going to be taking leaf level looks at Weeds, Insect Damage, Nutrient Deficiencies, and Disease Pressure and what it means for our corn crop. This flight is incredibly valuable because now you can start to see whether your nutrient program and/or herbicide program has been effective, and a...

What Is The 9500 Harvesting?
Переглядів 1,2 тис.28 днів тому
We dug out the old 9500 and put it to work! We have a small patch that we can’t get to with the S670 that isn’t really good for much other than raising some millet or in this case some triticale and oats that we can keep for our own personal use! The 9500 is definitely well past her prime. She has covered A Lot of acres and is due up for retirement. However, she still has some life left and thi...
Drone Scouting With Taranis Episode 2!

On Episode 2 of Drone Scouting with Taranis, we're diving into the data from the second scouting flight! On the West File Field, we're seeing an improvement in the stand count from the first flight. We're also seeing what looks like major weed pressure issues. However...one of these things requires a little context and another requires an "enhanced" look at the leaf-level images. The pictures t...
Mistakes Were Made…

Mistakes were made…And if course they were made in the roller-crimped cover crop. It just goes to show that small details matter. You can concoct the best plan ever, but if you fail to execute properly due to one setting being wrong, it can sink the whole thing. In the end, you just own up and fix it as best as possible and move on. #ag #kansas #ksfarm #johndeere #soybeans #springplanting #repl...

Seed Variety Numbers Are Dumb
Переглядів 42Місяць тому
Seed companies really need to stop letting engineers and scientists name their new corn, soybean, and milo varieties. The numbering systems are all different, make little to no sense, and after hearing two or three numbers, are impossible to remember. They need to take a page from the folks who name the wheat varieties. They obviously let the marketing teams name those. Legendary names like Jag...

    Having the triticale down would also be basically like a 'green manure'. Though it would make me a little sad, because any chance I get, I love to get triticale hay for my critters. Highest protein ever, and everything I fed it to absolutely loved it, hoovered it up and looked for more! :)

    Are you able to harvest your own triticale and grow it the second year? Or is it a first year cross of rye+wheat where next year you need to buy triticale seed? I like that I can get heirloom Rye and grow it year after year.

    • @davidkottman3440
      @davidkottman3440 Місяць тому

      Triticale is a closed cross that does not naturally hybridize in the field with rye or wheat, nor will it segregate back out into anything else in future generations. Replanting the seed will grow the same type again.

    I get a lot of questions. Heck, sometimes I get laughed at and ridiculed. The number 1 objection I hear is “green bridging.” Some of the biggest thought leaders in ag, with PhD’s and all, have promoted bare soil fallow as a way to terminate disease carry over. I do my best to explain the benefits of letting the enemy of my enemy move in and create balance. I would even go to say, limited signs of pressure that doesn’t get out of control is almost equal to a perfect crop. It’s a sign of balance. Of course as far as pestilence goes, a great crop with high brix is kryptonite to plant eating worms. Then there is the subject of diversity, more crop varieties being raised, to prevent strong populations of pathogens particular to one crop. But I will say this, I had nothing to lose. I had two thriving off farm careers, my initial purchase of 1215 acres of ground had absolutely zero chance of producing a commercial crop. I managed to get 550 acres of it going my 1st 2 years, and rented the 1200 acres next to me pretty cheap. He loved what I was doing so much, he seller financed me buying him out. Most farms just can’t afford the risk, and it is risky if you are not obsessed with the concept. That is where I see Gabe Brown and Allen Williams as important. Hold their hands, and walk them slowly in to better practices.

    My Dad did a little experiment once, he needed a trailer and said, "ok, if i cant build it in stuff I find, or take off somebody's hands in 3 days, I'll buy one." Well, 5 days later after two days of refusing to give in he had a nice little utility trailer for next to free. I'm not sure what the moral is here, but Christmas at my house was awesome mostly because i got something cool that used to be something else.

    I wonder if it makes tasty bread for a person if you let it run to seed, combine it, or scythe and thresh, then check the falling number, mill the grain, mix with water, salt and sourdough, let stand for 24 hours, then bake. For Latin etymological reasons, I rhyme "triticale" with the Spanish word "tamale" instead of the English personal name "Kayleigh", but then I guess I'm not really a farm lassie. Are you gonna grumble at your certified wheat seller? That sounds really bad. I wonder what the craziest weed you've found is. Not necessarily the most severe (i.e. quackgrass - not particularly crazy, but is particularly severe), but the craziest. Like "how did _that_ get _there_?"

    • @jvin248
      @jvin248 Місяць тому

      Rye (and probably triticale) will drown out Quack Grass and several other problematic weeds. I use Rye as my herbicide and Buckwheat as my insecticide because it encourages beneficial insects (thumb sized wolf spiders, bigger garden spiders, and pocket knife sized praying mantis).

    Not sure why planting green isn't, and hasn't been, the standard. I can think of a couple farmers I watch who go bare dirt and seem to suffer a lot of consequences when it comes to lack of moisture. Where they plant grain, they have to roll the ground for rocks anyway, so it's not because they don't own huge rollers or have the desire to run another round with another piece of equipment.
