Thanks to Alice Brooks, Jon M. Chu, & everyone else who made this film look amazing!
This is a video based on the concept of those TikTok videos where people will use google maps to explore a city until it's ugly.... except this time its with MOVIES!
I want this to be a fun exercise that we can all use to learn more about cinematography and what makes a shot pretty. This is not intended to bash or criticize any artists work.
Please watch the monologue at the end of the video before getting all up in arms about "Who are you to criticize professional cinematography" Chill.
I had fun doing this and want to do more.

MASTER Your Film Look: DEHANCER Tutorial & Review
I actually love these so much!!! So great to see appreciation for tiny moments most people wouldn’t even think about
I have no experience/knowledge whatsoever (except being british), but from listening to the commentary about how cold it was in england while they were filming, part of me wonders if the overexposure (and consequent 'desaturation') came from trying to make the sky look brighter/less grey - especially in scenes like 4:05
Interesting!! It’s possible
The colors do look washed out in general. The lack of contrast makes my eyes tired pretty instantly
I cannot believe they saw the dancing through life footage and didn’t immediately correct the lighting. The whole thing is a big oof. I understand that these choices were intentional, but If you try something and it doesn’t work out you should accept it and try something different
I still don't agree though. The scene "works" so well that it's most peoples' standout scene. It's lit from the outdoors.
It was not ugly. The problem that I have is just with the storytelling. I didn't like that they are stretching out a three hour musical into two three hour movies. We only needed one movie. They adapted the Sound of Music into a single three hour movie. They had to make changes because what works on stage doesn't always translate to the big screen and it was one of the greatest movies ever made. I took my mom to see a professional big budget stage production and as good as it was I still preferred the movie. This story only needs one film.
The film is VERY colorful, that's not the issue. Fans need to stop pretending it doesnt have a major lighting issue though, so many times throughout the film, it wasnt as noticable in the cinema until i finally watched it at home and saw what everyone was talking about, good examples are during the dancing through life sequences and during Arianas big dance number during popular, and during Defying gravity when they have the light behind elphaba in the sky, major overexposure.. and this is from someone that LOVED the movie.. the lighting was terrible in some scenes and that is it's only flaw. 9.5/10, taking .5 for obvious lighting issues
Glad to see more people talking about the cinematography. I think Wicked is extremely modern in a good way, and the stereoscopic conversion added so much to the look of the film for me. Jon Chu got his start directing in native 3D after all! His sense of depth is really incredible and it still shows in his converted films (GI Joe 2 even got significantly delayed for the stereo conversion).
I really don't like this trend of "expensive movies/TV shows should be swamped in glare, shot with the shallowest depth of field possible (not so much of an issue here in the wides), and with heavily raised blacks" look. All the Marvel films have it these days, way too many TV shows. They've dropped that look for the latest season of Doctor Who, and while that show might be a bit uneven it looks markedly better for not feeling like it's shot through a perpetual polaroid filter. I get that the Michael Bay era of hyper-contrast might have gone out of vogue, but I feel like there's got to be a middle ground of allowing more films to have contrast. Some of the best looking content out there I feel is the one that bucks the trend of what people have decided looks 'kino'. Narcos is a few years old now, but I recall finding that show using natural feeling levels of colour and contrast and a deeper focus really appealing (making me feel like I'm actually in the humid green hills of Columbia) back when shows were more and more feeling more like one continuous dream sequence with how they shoot them. Though maybe when this is out of fashion once again I'll end up being nostalgic for it then.
Don't say this a lot, but I was here before your channel blows up.
🙏🙏🙏🙏
There are several ugly frames in this film. Whole sequences in fact 😅
then u woke up LMFAOOO
@ here comes the delusion
"Monkey. Gorgeous." Hell yeah
This is a great video I’m shocked it doesn’t have tons of views
I'm saying
HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO GET IT IN DAVINCI? I also bought it and I have no clue!!
Personally, I feel like context is very important. Wicked is a story that is meant to revise certain notions we associate with America’s first fairytale. In a sense, this story is asking us to take off our emerald-tinted glasses. Wicked is already very grand as is; having a (slightly) more grounded look feels very adequate for a cinematic version of the story.
Yeah, good insight! I definitely think thats what they were going for.
@ side note: this video was entertaining af 🔥
@j.p.o.s 🙏 Thanks!
Sorry but this is a reach. The world we live in is vibrant and varied and Wicked presented a slop of lens flares and backlit sets. There’s just no excuse
@ ok.
A lot of the day scenes looked washed/boring. But they nailed most of the dark indoors and night scenes. Dancing Through Life scene looks horrible. I cannot believe that Mamma Mia looked more colorful with half of the budget.
Yeah, when they were shooting in direct sunlight, they got some of the lens flaring issues I talked about. And the way the lighting was structured in the dancing through life scene made it so that they were almost exclusively shooting into a bright light.
What does the budget have to do with colour lmao???
What’s next?
An MCU movie ?
Thanks man!
Can you/have you done Fahrenheit 451 (2019)? While not a great film at all, it is a very visually pleasing one imo
2:33 it's giving me "strange darling" vibes. Greetings from Poland.
This is fantastic series and I hope you expand on it! Keep up the good work! 😊
Thank you! Im supposed to have one come out tomorrow, but it got copyright struck, so we’ll see.
This is a fantastic series!
ye the ugliest shows were in the car canse. in fact the editing and framing in the car chase was weak, I was confused what’s even happening most of it.
There's lots of wonderful shots in The Haunting, but one worth investigating is the flying shot into Eleanor (main character) while she's standing on the balcony. As she looks up, the camera comes crashing towards her, from above. I would love to know how that was done.
Fun fact! That larger "gobo" is actually a somewhat common practice called a cucoloris or cookie on set. Great video!
"not my broke ass film lol
broke ass filmmaking needs hahahahahahah that got me
Love this video. The dozer dolly is beautiful
Hot damn did AI adjust clone Nerdwriter . (The resemblance is uncanny). Regardless; spectacular video and a very welcome reprieve from the morbid talking head videos I’m watching on linear camera profiles and calibration . You squeezed a lot of content into 8 minutes ; presentation was #cheffskiss.
😆 Nerdwriter is way better than me, but thank you! 🙏
The Dancing Dolly move was used in Titanic by James Cameron when Rose and Jack are dancing below deck.
Number 34 the cinematographer didnt give a reason or what the short represent.
I think the director chimes in and basically says it's "unmotivated"
@ that shot should be removed from that film. lol
THIS TYPE OF SCENE REALLY IS……BORING
Thanks for this buddy 🤜🤛
No Problem!
So good
Thank you so much for this, it is very insightful and in-depth, and too high quality. Keep up the good work!
Thanks!!
Nice content🙏🦭
Thanks!!!
but there is an incredibly ugly screenplay
bad take
the frame where he has is finger in his eye taking out the contact lens is still a cinematic shot somehow
feels more blurry because of motion than ugly but fair enough
I feel the same about the new Bladerunner 2049... though you may have to blur some frames in post
This is a repost because i pronounced something wrong in the last one.
Nah your ai pronounced something wrong
Thank you for the repost because it came up as an AI choice and I clicked, liked and subscribed. Looking forward to watching some older videos as well as the future ones.
@dennis1954 thanks! What is an Ai choice?
@@kindofafilmmakerYou Tubes Artificial Intelligence I guess. I wasn’t searching for anything close to this subject today but have on other days.
If you excluded things like distortion or motion blur, I genuinely don't think you would have found an ugly shot in the film (Excluding 1-2).
The most ironic part...it received nothing for Cinematography at the Oscar's.
Yeah the oscars are a joke
even Roger Deakins called them out for it
Fantastic video, was surprised your channel didnt have a subscriber count similar to the bigger cinema channels on the platform. You seem very intelligent about the subject and I learned some interesting stuff about one of my favorite films. Instant follow.
🙏 Thank You!
Ugliest shot is when the movie ended
Pre-chosen scenes to analyze, but clever concept of using a "random" frame picker to serve as a transition. Can't hate.
they could have been pre-chosen randomly and he just simulates it in the video for effect as well
@thevoteman there feels like a lot of scripted elements in the video where he randomly lands on a spot and knows exactly what to tell about the shot. The scene. The lighting. He does the same thing at least 3 times to make the video. And then the last 2 minutes are real random things to pad it out even more.
Film is just a photo mode comp
I'd love a video like this on John Wick 4. That movie is so beautiful.
Easily one of my favorite parts about the way The Batman is shot apart from lighting is the tight focal lengths especially on the closeups. Something about how it makes you focus on the facial performances and blends the world around the background is really stunning to me. Can't say I've put it perfectly into words, but it's one of the standout features to me.
This series is incomplete without Bladerunner 2049
