Some exercises tend to be the same session by session and some vary. I know teachers who ALWAYS teach the same exercises to start a session but I have always thought that was boring and sub-optimal. The Well Is Very Deep - Tai Chi A Study For Life
Why don't you show us effectiveness of your martial skills against a MMA, BJJ, Boxing, Kickbox, practitioner? 😅 I think we all know the answer...
:) :) :) - great idea, I'm 71 years old and I'm sure they would love to have me in the UFC :) :) :) I'd consider saying that I did Karate for over 30 years and at the time of retiring I was a 5th degree black belt, but there's no point as of course Karate is of no use against MMA, BJJ, etc etc :) :) :)
@RobertAgarHutton When I say you, I also include your trainees. Show us just a slice of what a Tai-chi practitioner can do against anybody who have trained MMA BBJ Kickboxing etc for over a year. That's all. I already spent my 5 years on this mumbojumbo and know firsthand the answer. Life is too precious to live in illusion.
@@sait962 Most of my trainees are about my age :) I hope that have found a martial art that you enjoy and gives you what you require.
@@sait962 oh, by the way, please feel free to post a link to you training or teaching.
@@RobertAgarHutton You may also post a link showing any Tai-chi practitioner successfully defending himself against real martial arts practitioner. No Kung Fu movies don't count 😄
New face, voice, charisma and content next please?
DAMN - and I thought it was so good I'd be asked to be the next James Bond :) :) :)
Right on. Ill try to exercise and use your videos more.
Ive been lacking on joint and system maintenance. Some of my joints were creaking starting back up with this video.
Take it slow and do exercise gently and regularly - and check in with your doctor if you need to.
Lovely, thank you for this
Looking good, enjoy and keep well. I am doing Qi with 2 classes today and a push hands session afterwards 😊
GREAT STUFF SIR.
I like what you show, informative and entertaining at the same time. :)
A good teacher, allows for variation, self defense is not scripted.
Very good instructional video. And enjoyable too.
enjoyed the video like the psychology of fighting great stuff
Sam is a saint😊
May I ask; who your teacher was? You have no information on your style, lineage or teacher/s on your website. Thank you.
Heaven and earth blocking down as well as up.
Great Video! I like your teaching style!
i just can't watch you anymore frfr.
One technique defeats a thousand.
Hello, a question; Can Tai Chi still be effective if you dont weigh alot?
Sorry for the delay in replying - For exercise and health, any weight should be fine. For fighting, the answer is that within reason, yes. Obviously if you weigh 60Kg then fighting someone who weighs 200Kg is going to be difficult.
Excelente
Trying this routine first thing tomorrow morning😊
Thank you for this video
Excellent video great sifu!!!
Do you live in Amarillo Texas? :)
Hi, sorry for the delay in replying - no, I was just visiting.
The sign kinda reminds me of german houses for some reason
🙏🙏🙏
Really think I need to get a better quality webcam !!!
Nice one Robert and Sam! Thanks for sharing the joy 😁
Hi Suzette, thank you.
Sir u r so nice
Thank you.
@@RobertAgarHutton sir I have a knee problem this is refree have u any solution
In this chi exercise
@@STFoodsecret for knee problems, Tai Chi may well help (I have an injured knee and it helps me) but you should have a Tai Chi instructor teach you in person to try and figure out the best way to help the knee.
@@STFoodsecret I don't really understand your question - 'chi' can be considered as 'life energy' in which case, yes - but if you mean some special type of energy, with unusual powers and capabilities, then no.
Awesome thank you ❤
thank you for helping seniors and disabled.
Since I'm now 69 years old that means I was a youngster of about 58 or so when I recorded that ... I really must get around to doing another walking stick video if only to see for myself how I have changed (or not changed) since I recorded that. One change, I no longer wear suits :) :) :)
@@RobertAgarHutton Thank you for your reply. I think it's better to eat loose comfortable clothes out, jigging suits and sneakers,so you can fight or get away.Hoping you make more self defense videos for seniors. It's sad when people get very old and can no longer defend themselves. I pray every day for a change in society to go back when seniors were helped and respected, not made into victims. Thank you again May God bless you, protect you and keep you safe, bless you with health and strength.🙏❤️
@@pattiannepascual Thank you very much.
how do you take punches and hits? in taichi i heard there's a way to absorb hits with softness rather than the typical hard body resistance training found in harder styles.
Great question, I don't know. I remember seeing Systema people taking and giving hits at a seminar I attended years ago. There was a softness and redirection in what they did. I have also (years and years ago) seen a demonstration by a USA demo team - Rod ????? - where they would take full power punches to the throat and kicks to the groin. But not sure what method they used to do that. I would speculate that if your timing and relaxation was very good you could absorb a hit by subtlety moving away from it, but personally, I'll go with 'Mr Miyagi' "No be there" :) :) :)
@@RobertAgarHutton ahh Mr Miyagi though fictional is very wise. I sensed that kind of Karate was a soft style and had a taichi vibe to it.
An excellent session Robert. Great to see you training. I have really missed our sessions. Best wishes.
Thanks Steve. Yes the instructor's get togethers back in Luton were great fun. Now I'm based in Northamptonshire, quite a bit further away from the old 'crew' and several of those instructors who we used to meet up with have pretty much disappeared from my view :)
Thank you for posting this Robert. Wonderful to see and most entertaining. I'd love to go to a workshop run by you, but given the other side of the world factor, I'm very happy with the video option. I think my favourite bit out of this was at the end when Sam asks "Am I doing the right thing?" thereby inviting you to gently nudge his attention here and there. That hit a nerve for some reason - I don't think enough of us ask that question. I probably would have been too scared to ask it frankly because the answer wouldn't have been delivered in such an ego-less manner as you showed. Hmm, lots to ponder here!
Thank you very much for your comments. Sam and I have been chatting and hopefully shorter videos (maybe 20 or 30 minutes) will be something we will do on a monthly basis.
It must be 25 years since you were at my Dojo with Roger Sheldon, and held hands with my Daughter, Stephanie. 😀
@@sslang yes, but it's still a story I tell, the uncomfortable looks on your black belt's faces and the distance they tried to keep from each other as they held hands was hysterically funny :)
I have utterly enjoyed this, thank you! And I can see this working, with the appropriate "warrior" or survival mindset, plus due "explosion" and strength and just enough care not to actually Kill the person but to break a boné or two in his body. I believe the upper cut with the Palm of the hand on the basis of the enemy's nose would probably BE a Killer blow as it would eventually embed his nose bone INTO his brain, eventually. So, it would probably Be something to avoid, although it actually came to my mind... It would BE a wholly bad idea, unless the bloke was actually intent on actually killing me.
Thanks for your comment, much appreciated. Just a small correction, the 'nose bone into brain' is an Urban Legend - the 'nose bone' is actually cartilage so can't be driven through the skull into the brain. HOWEVER, if you hit someone hard enough in the same direction that is implied in that kind of attack it could potentially jar the head enough to cause trauma to the brain and if the person fell down and hit the back of their head on the ground, then death is possible... One of the reasons for practicing ANY martial art for an extended period of time is to try and develop enough skill to deal with an attack WITHOUT causing unnecessary damage to an attacker so I totally agree with "It would BE a wholly bad idea, unless the bloke was actually intent on actually killing me." :)
@@RobertAgarHutton Thank you, sir. Much appreciated.
This is brilliant Robert..had me transfixed and the music is spot on 👊🙏
Thanks Jim, I'll be back at Skipsea in September and have some fun things that I want to teach . . . 'fun' being a euphemism for 'Blooming heck that hurts' :) :) :)
Interesting to see you have a Kwan Dao now on the wall thanks for this video always good to keep up on the basics
Yup, got it in January, hopefully later in the year I'll get time to practice with it (outside, as it's too tall to use in the studio) and then I'll post some videos of me working with it and learning from it. I have always loved the basics - I continually do simple simple simple things in my own practice - I get that some people find basics boring but I've always found that they improve my skills overall and - more importantly - are a great way to relax and really feel how my body and mind connect and what they can do. Hope all is good with you :)
Did a bit in prison liked it am in the south west thinking of maybe starting to do it again
Taichi martial applications like the previous videos ✌🏻. I loved the previous videos! Sir.
Snap the cane to the groin even
Yes :) Doesn't ten years just fly past. I must do an updated version of this video just to see/show what's changed (if much has?).
@@RobertAgarHutton i ask myself what the hell happened to my 20's 😂🤣😂🤣. Soon am entering my 40s. Still a nice vid sir! And you're still doing martial arts 🙏🏻😯. Yes an updated version would be interesting. So many ways to defend oneself. Infinite. I try to formulise a list of ways for some reason 😏. Our brains love to simplify things to understand them sometimes.
It's nice if the same number of people who came get to go home 🤣😂🤣😂. I love the way this vid is put. I've been curious about martial applications in taichi. Oh. And a Lego brick is powerful. Do you know how many it's caused pain, accidentally stepping on it barefoot? Does a lego brick think? Nope it's just what it is. Small and sharp. 🙏🏻 peace sir
Beautiful video sir!
Thank you.
Nice one Robert! Thanks for sharing that. I love the relaxed technique and especially the laughs! The way it should be.
Thanks. Jokes (generally bad ones) and laughs is definitely my signature style - which some people love and other's hate... A story.... Many years back I was at a seminar (as a participant) and made a joke - the Black Belt standing next to me gave me a disapproving look and said "When you have been doing martial arts as long as me you will take it seriously", I asked (innocently) "How long have you been doing it for?", "Twenty years" the gentleman replied (a bit proudly), "Oh," I retorted, "I've been doing it for 30 years..." - I swear that his brain exploded :) :) :) :) :)
@@RobertAgarHutton Ahhh, gotta love being presented with a good dose of someone's ego 😄
Nice. I get anxiety practicing with peoples necks but that back head hair pull twist looked boss.
Hi, thanks, sensible - necks are places where a serios injury can occur - always better to play safe. The hair pull is great fun but has to be done smoothly (and I'm not sure that I did that as well as I would wish) and go through multiple directions to get the desired result.
@@RobertAgarHutton I think I understand what you mean. As in, spiral trajectory (multiple directions) is harder to stop than straight line?
Good workout. I recently pulled someting slightly in my collar bone/shoulder but was able to complete session. Clock is nice even if it does tick at half seconds sometimes. I like the early shoulder raise wit head side tilt it make some neck bones pop and jumbled back into place in a nice way.
i have a question what move in 24 step tai chi can defend agaisnt a hook punch ????
That's a really good question and assuming that we both mean the same thing by 'hook punch' that is an in close short roundhouse, the answer is not much - at least no specific move. It would be more about intercepting / redirecting with whatever (arm, shoulder) you could, or simply using footwork and body movement to evade. From a self defence perspective (and yes this is the ideal situation and YES things can and will go wrong) you want to maintain a safe distance from a potential attacker so they cannot start an attack with a hook punch, and also taking the ideal case - if they have started to attack you, you ought to be responding in a way that minimizes their ability to throw punches. That means working to their outside or if on the inside disrupting/controlling their balance so it's difficult for them to generate enough force to hit hard. and.... yes there are things I would do, if I was the 'attacker' in that scenario and was having my balance controlled, so as to enable me to hit hard :) and... yes there are counters to the counters etc :) :) :) That is why real fights are not something that anyone should get involved with if there is any way it can be avoided. In a real fight, people get hurt, sometimes badly, and sometimes killed - so yes yes yes practice the physical skills but also practice practice practice the soft skills too. I hurt my leg yesterday and ended up in a local hospital's A&E department for over 4 hours - chatted to a number of fellow 'walking wounded' and practiced the most important and fundamental skill, chat to strangers be friendly, make them smile :)
@@RobertAgarHutton sir im interested to learn tai chi self defense using 24 steps do you have a set of videos how to use them ?
@@seven-qs5tm The creation of a set of videos based on the 24 is on the list of things that I want to do over the next few months as I am adding content to our online training program at taichitraining.pro
Quite by chance this last weekend, I taught something that could (probably) be considered a defence against a hook punch, but it's NOT from the 24 - have a look at the video ua-cam.com/video/ZrXjSZtUFAM/v-deo.html (it's a second or two later). It's what I described as a 'panic' block.
Thank you so much for that very informative video. As a tai chi instructor people often ask "why do we do that" and I find explaining the self defense reasoning helps them understand (as it did me when I was taught). And Mr Sam Foster did an excellent job even though you were making him laugh. I am sure that learning is much more fun when humour is applied as well, and your humour is appreciated. Thank you once again, I look forward to more information.
Hi Roni, thank you for your comment and glad that you liked the video. Sam was brilliant and yes, humour is - for me - a critical part of learning and teaching. People give up their most priceless asset, time, in order to learn, and so it should be useful but also enjoyable.
Why did you not show the push hand
When he punches you can I use cloud hand and push him away from me
Pretty good workout. My favorite part was the back kicks. Good luck on the competition thingy.
