Like anything in this world, from love and passion stems hard work and dedication. I fell in love with the sport of spearfishing, not because it was something cool to do and I wanted to impress everyone, but because of the feelings that the sport conjured inside of me and the beauty and tranquility that the ocean has to offer. Spearfishing is not just about killing but rather something larger. It's learning where one's food comes from, how to be respectful to the ocean environment and the creatures that inhabit its domain. Practicing a sustainable way of fishing to avoid over-fishing and decreasing by-catch is one perk of this highly rewarding sport. On the other hand, this sport teaches patience and respect and offers utopia to those who choose to protect the ocean and its ecosystem.
Spearfishing California Halibut 2019
We were lucky enough to land these California Halibut shore diving in some very shallow waters. This summer 2019 has been one of the best seasons for diving!

Do you recommend a spot in Malibu area ? I’m new I just dove for the second time 3 weeks ago
Anyone who asks for a spot in the YT comments section is not to be trusted. They'll probably blow up any spot you give them.
Awesome way to get eaten by a White shark!
What beach
nice vid thanks for sharing the adventure
looks like a great place to spear thanks for sharing
3:01 Barracuda?
I always feel like a WSB is just right around the corner in those murky green areas
Awesome vid!
Great content. Thanks for sharing.
Good work, and nice shooting! What time of year was this? I’ve been spoiled by the clear water in Florida. I’m not comfortable in that murky water anymore. Had me holding my breath with my pulse racing just watching.
Beautiful video. Used to spearfish the kelp forests between Point Dume and Leo Carrillo with a Hawaiian sling. I was never bold enough to wear a game bag. Stay safe, brother.
where is this? ;)
Sick video!! Quick question. I saw you spirit a opaleye and I was wondering if you think they’re a good tasting fish
👌👌👌🔥
WOW muy chingon el vídeo bro
Andrew this is some seriously sick footage!!! Is this in santa barbara?
....look at ALL THOSE SEABASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome video I’d like and subscribe
Why do spearfishing videos consistently have the worst music?
good video.. my favorite if anything...i know is hard to look around slowly..
Thanks for posting
What speargun is that
I’m from California and would like to do that one day
Honestly couldn’t finish this video. The fact that you lost two and just happened to find them (very lucky) is upsetting. You need to go chase the spear and put your hand on the other side so that they don’t come off. Or better yet shoot butts with a pole spear and get your hand on quicker since they are so delicate and rip off so easily. I’ve been shooting halibut where you’re at for 18 years and it’s changed in that time and it needs to be protected by people like us. Great fish though. No hate, just conservation.
Hey brotha, are there a lot of people getting at it in sd with pole spears?? I’m just starting out and prefer to learn with the pole spear for better technique, and honestly it looks bad ass getting a fish with a pole spear… I’m very interested in pole spearing some of these fish that people say you NEEd a spear fun for… You know any good groups to get with or where I can find good buddies in sd/ OC ?
Agreed. People need to learn to wait for a good shot, rather than shooting from that far away. Losing two fish in one dive is ridiculously bad.
Great video! Was that last stone shot on a blue rock fish? Also, you still dive PV?
My cuz has a house in palos verdes and I'm a beginner lookin for spots this year and I was wondering if there are areas near there I can shore dive or use my kayak, but sick vid
If your ok with hiking try the drainage pipe off paseo Del Mar
1801 is the address of the house next to the spot I believe
@@TheJellyfish800 Awesome I know here that is, and have you went there recently?
@@zachczyz2165 yea I went there about 3 weeks ago. It’s good it’s a little murky but so is everything and if you keep going and get good there are wsb to get. Probably best spot to shore dive as a serious spearfisher
i aspire to make a video like this one day 10/10
Cool vids! I’m getting into the sport just wonder where are some good spots, I live here in SoCal so I’ll take any suggestions, keep it up!🤙
Hmmmm 22 inches? Jk. My favorite fish to shoot. Why did I leave cali
Visibility looks so good!
nice edit nice spot
Fantastic video. Brings back memories from So Cal, back in the late 80s. Great to see it all again! (New Sub) Keep up the great work.
Great video. New sub.
Thanks for the love and the subscription !
how long is your bottom time and how long did it take to get to that time?
On average I usually try to stay down for 45 seconds to a minute. My max down time is about 1:45. However, I encourage everyone to listen to what their body is telling them and not to rely on a watch or time. For example, I might have a better bottom time because I made a good descent and had a proper breathe up prior to the dive. My body is properly oxygenated and therefore I can stay down longer. But pushing yourself to stay down a certain time on every dive is dangerous and can lead to shallow water blackouts. Observe what you are feeling, is your body telling you that its ok to stay down longer? or are you forcing yourself and pushing your limits because you want to be down for a minute and its only been 30 seconds? Bottom line is rely on instinct and how you are feeling, not on a time on your watch. It takes a long time to train your body to do these things. When I first started I could barely dive down 10 feet, let alone hold my breath for longer than 20 seconds. It took me at least a year and consistent diving to really get comfortable in the water and to be able to hold my breath for over a minute. This obviously varies, but I would say don't worry about your down time! Focus on actively hunting, engaging with the environment, and listening to your body and your down time will naturally increase! Hope this is helpful!
Andrew Baeza yeah thank you!
Sick asf
Dang! I thought for sure you had that halibut. Guess you can't pierce those things deep enough if they are sitting on top of a rock.
What gun are you using? If you dive out in the LA county or OC area maybe we can link up and dive together
Subscribed. Dope content man. I’ll be back to my home in San Diego soon and I hope to be out in the kelp patties.
awesome shooting. i dont know if its the same with all fish, but when i shoot grouper or snapper, I pull the line in like a mime. this engages the spear flops, and helps keep the fish secured. where as if the spear is just resting on the ground with the fish flopping, the spear tips can disengage.
Geeesh!
That's it! Im going in!
Nice
Cool video but @2:56 made me and anxious, gotta spit your snorkel out man
New to spearfishing, why do you spit your snorkel?
@@aidano1o in any freediving situation you don't want the snorkel in your mouth; you want your lips sealed as an extra barrier against the water (can also pack more air into your mouth with lips sealed, if you're comfortable with that style). Keeping a snorkel in penetrates that barrier, so now the diver has compromised some safety.
wheredoyouput the fish after you get them
I have a stringer, a little line that wraps around my waist, where I keep my fish.
dope halibut!
Isn't that dangerous bleeding the halibut, ie; sharks and seals?
Yes it is dangerous. You must always be aware of your surroundings in the water. However, I like to bleed the fish in the water as it makes it easier to clean and eat.
Where is this at
looks like palos verdes. shouldnt ask spots tho brotha
Big sheepshead like that you have to move slow and steady. Nice videos tho man I miss spearing P.V.
Thanks! Its amazing how skittish they are ! Super smart
@@andrewbaeza2474 yeah they are, do you hole hunt at all for them couple of awesome little reefs out of Balboa off of 40th st. If I remember correctly. 🤙
@@themagicshortbus1715 Yeah, I've shot a couple in holes. Usually find them there later in the day and on night dives. During the day however, I usually see them roaming and don't usually check in holes for them. You can find em in some real unusual spots, sometimes super shallow!
Hey man you got some great stuff keep it up, quick question do you normally dive during a specific time of day or just whenever?
Hey thanks man! I've been diving at all different times of the day. Honestly, you just never know what you're going to see out there. Thats part of the reason why i love this sport because you can see something amazing and fantastic every single time you go out, regardless of the time of day. I would say that you have an advantage catching lobster at night, but i don't mind crawling into caves to grab em! Morning dives are good and i hear going at high tide is best!
Andrew Baeza yea a high tide at night is what I have found to be best for lobster! Thanks for the bit of advice
Where did you go in California??
