The Ford was certainly more modern then the Chevrolet, and the Ford had a 3-speed automatic transmission, while Chevrolet's new Turboglide was a catastrophe. I've always found it a bit odd that Chrysler's 1957 'forward look' cars get all the credit for lowering the belt line, when the 1957 Fords did the same thing.

One of many family cars as a child was the green color 63 American Rambler it was a great all around car with the 4 door and became my first car at 13 because the clutch went out so it became my first clutch job as a fledgling mechanic. True Story.😊😊

It’s fun to see how the automakers tried to sell their cars in the past. Ironic that at the time the Chevrolet three year old body was considered “out of date” compared to the new lower/ wider styles of both Ford and Plymouth, yet the 1957 Chevrolet in later years became the icon of 1950s style cars.

I'm old enough to remember well both of these cars. The 1960 American was reliable, comfortable, economical. Hardly pretty, but not ugly either with its restyle. In high school I used to drive a friend's often , with the 3 speed and OD. Loved it. It did its job and did it well. I also remember well and the seventies and eighties when that ability to repair oneself, much less reliability, was like a distant memory. I remember in the mid sixties when an older guy in our neighborhood had a Corvair and something happened to the engine and it fell down out of the car. He replaced it with the new Mustang fastback in green with a white interior. Good old days.

Little real substance??? Thanks very much for this video, but I think we've got a Chevy guy here. They go through the frame, the suspension, the brakes, the rear end, the motor, even the roof supports. Some very compelling stuff that is not very confusing even for a Ford guy. They even tackle Chevy fuel injection! Try to find anything like this today. I've owned both a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air and a Ford Fairlane, both completely restored. I love Chevies, but my Ford had a far more stable ride, handled much better, and just felt more controllable. It felt like it benefitted from new engineering, which is supported by this video. The Chevy felt like it was from another era, which it was. You can argue the Chevy is better looking, but the Ford is a better car - at least the ones that didn't rust.

History has shown that Ford build quality was such that many of those "inner Fords" rusted out faster than the "inner Chevrolets' built in 1957...have you seen a '57 Ford...lately?

The Falcon may have been less attractive, but it passed the test of time. My grandmother bought one in 1964 and drove it until 1972. She drove a lot more than to church and the hairdresser! It made twice yearly trips from northern CT to Miami, FL plus lots of local and short trip use.

Falcon outsold the Corvair 3 to 1 in 1960. They were priced lower, had a good heater, a real trunk and got better gas mileage. They also offered a useable station wagon. That being said... The Corvair is more fun to drive. I own both an EM Corvair and Falcon.

Seems so strange that a heater wouldn't be standard equipment!

Growing up thru the Rambler era, we always saw the entire brand as economy cars, even though the Ambassador was their version of "upscale". But since they all were smaller than full-size, they carried that stigma & their formal ads (like @0:12) always made us laugh.

I have two 1962 corvairs great cars

In the first place, the 57 Ford was in the same class as the 57 Plymouth, not the Dodge, which was in the same class as the 57 Mercury. He also missed the 285 HP 312 cu. in. Ford engine, with dual 4 bbl carbs, higher Comp Ratio, & hotter cam. Al in all I would have chosen the Ford over the Dodge or Plymouth in 57. In 58, I would have chosen the Dodge over the 58 Ford. I had a 57 Ford Fairlane 500 hardtop, & as far as I knew they were no longer called Victorias. That ended in 56.

My Dad opted for a fire-engine red 1960 Rambler station wagon. What a fun family car........ Not so cool, though, when I turned 16 --LOL.

When new 57 Chevys were old peoples' cars. Youth bought 57 Fords which outsold 57 Chevys.

I doubt everything in this AD, was the truth. I preferred the FORD & had a 57 Farelane 500 HT, with the 312 engine & ford-O=Matic three speed tranny. Raced many 57 Chevy's & was never beaten.Even now I would still rather have a 57 Ford than a 57 Chevy. Better yet, I would like to have both ! The 55 Chevy was always one of my favorite cars.

No mention of the Ford disastrous Y Black head design. Ports stacked on top of each other. Nothing so strange produced since. & those heads have oiling problems. Ford engine bays were always super cramped, an engineering disaster.

Im a ford guy but like anything old. Time told the tale, Chevy had the look, chevy had the engine that is still popular, chevy had the Powerglide- still a top transmission, ford had the diff design there leading up to the 9" and 9 3/8". From that particular era, chevy had the lasting formula by far. As years went by chevy adopted a lot of ford styled engineering features in the ls then ford recently borrowed a few back within the godzilla engine! All up, its simply personal taste.

What a nice nostalgia as we had a lot of `em also in Argentina, assembled at domestic facilities plant with Kaiser`s association . Althought i don`t understand very much about cars, these Ramblers had the best reputation about reliable cars , most durable than equivalent sized Fords, Chevrolets or Dodges . Compliments for this comprehensive footage
