Well, if you become dependent on the universal translator and it broke, you should just default to the language you learned during childhood which makes it interesting that none of the humans reverted to English yet when Saru got partial translator functionality operational, he said those who know Earth English should be fine (seems to me that they showed no one on the bridge knew Earth English...).

I think it is a missed opportunity to show the multi-culturalism of the crew that they were not all speaking their native languages and the translator had just shut down instead of going haywire and translating their speech into multiple (changing) languages. This would also show up the complacent laziness of the crew in not bothering to learn other languages (much like, to be fair, most English users today, myself included!) but in this case because of the ubiquity of universal translators.

There was a scene in a "Red Dwarf" episode where Rimmer orders, "Transmit the following message on all frequencies and in all languages. Including Welsh."

So.. in the Trek universe humans from Earth require a universal translator to communicate with each other?? That is piss poor writing and now I remember why I stopped watching.

I honestly can't get enough of Anson Mount speaking French at the start. It sure doesn't sound "natural", as in, "I speak this language everyday", but it doesn't sound broken either. Meanwhile, the ship's computer speaking french is just... a certified yikes.

Wait... I always assumed the humans on board all spoke english and the universal translators were mostly to translate alien languages to english so everyone had a lingua franca on board the ship. Is this what language each crew member is actually speaking/ their native languages, or is the translator just translating what they are saying to a random language they don't necessarily speak like german, french, spanish, ect?

This was the dumbest scene in the whole show. The universal translator is a device, if you speak English and other people speak English you’ll be able understand them.

Probably one of the worst scenes in the show, and that's really saying something. You're telling me her majesty Michael can only speak Klingon? She doesn't speak English or even Vulcan? Pike can only speak French?? Hell most modern day French can speak at least a little English.

Starfleet is full of overachievers. It’s hard to believe not one other person other than saru learned another language. Even with translators. Other than that tho I love this scene. One of my favorite discovery scenes probably.

The show is crap but this scene is really well made. Saru walks around like a guy from IT help desk. And we learned that the language of the controls can be changed.

I hate watching Captain Pike. I feel like I am cheating on a girlfriend. I am a Picard guy. However, Captain Pike is trying hard to become my favorite captain. I can't wait for the series.
