How to build resilience to #bushfires with regenerative agriculture - Farmer Martin Royds
Meet Martin Royds, an inspirational regenerative #farmer from #braidwood on Jillamatong, who through a complete mindset shift has increased #biodiversity and #productivity resulting in increased #resilience
As a fifth-generation farmer, Martin began farming using conventional practices. He also became a contract sprayer. The excessive use of herbicides and insecticides poisoned him. Around the same time, he realised that his farming practices were not economically or environmentally sustainable. This launched him into a #regenerativefarming journey
Martin now applies #holisticmanagement and an understanding of how the #australian landscape works to slow water down, retain fertility and store them both in his farm landscape. He prevents moisture draining from his #landscape through the installation of leaky weirs and contour banks that stop erosion and spread water out. He recycles nutrients through innovative dam design and employing stock to transfer fertility uphill. His implementation of these principles has improved his farm’s soil health, water-holding capacity and #pasture diversity - all while restoring natural processes and decreasing the impact of climate extremes.
During the bushfires Martin was the only farm with water. He provide water access to the firefighting helicopters to put out the fires from his weir.
Produced by growloveproject?hl=en

What are weeds telling us - A @SoilsforLife podcast

The industrialisation of #agriculture has created large paddocks of monoculture crops and increased the chemical burden on farmers and their environments. Global #herbicide use has continued to increase as farmers have shifted to no till practices and adopted herbicide-tolerant crop cultivars over the last 30 years. One result of this is that the list of herbicide resistant weeds is growing. So...

Nicely done. I would like to comment that tall trees with an open canopy are ideal so the light still gets through, and the shade moves with the sun forcing the stock to move so no one area gets super tramped, and over fertilized by manure. Also the right amount of shade for the size of the herd to spread out the stock, and manure as appears to be part of the management here.😀

As an American, I can only say, I like Glenn! Glenn Morris is a real farmer, and more importantly, he knows what he is talking about. I can only wish that US farmers learn to be more organic farmers and less involved in politics. Glenn's holistic approach to farm management and water usage are innovative, important, and informative to real farmers and ranchers. Glenn is talking about using proven, holistic methods to improve both the landscape and yields. Bravo!

This is fantastic! Love your swale system! I’m one year converted to regenerative agriculture on my property in Victoria. Hardpan was at 10cm on average 12 months ago, erosion was bad, our topsoil looked like subsoil for the most part. We were alternating between having a muddy sloppy mess and dry baron cracked ground. Hardpan is gone in large patches of the property now, much deeper in most other spots, except the trafficked areas. We’re using cell grazing, short pressure periods, long rest periods, chicken tractors and diversified the pastures, stopped all chemical inputs completely, put in tillage and forage radish in the mix along with taproot brassicas and a variety of other soil helpers. I actually heavily broadcast cover crop mixes across about 10 acres of pasture that was just perennial rye and white clover, as an experiment, that area is like a buffet for the stock now, their favourite section, and the soil is the best there. We’ve got thick lush pastures this winter instead of an overgrazed mud patch. Happy sheep and cattle. It’s great. Can’t wait to see it stay greener longer over summer, the rhizome depth has pretty much doubled in most areas of the property, so I think we’ll hold moisture for a decent stretch into the dry period. These practices are really effective and the results are much faster than I expected. About to start selling layer pullets I’ve bred up for the fertiliser they produce. I’ll keep breeding them now, they do a great job, and it’s a good additional income stream. I recon for every worm those chickens eat, 100 grow in its place when the tractor moves on, the soil is teeming with worms where they were, softening up the soil and turning it darker. Great to see. And I’m going to do some Silvopasture, plant a eucalypt rows across the property, for shade, water retention and future timber production. Really enjoying learning these new methods. All farms should do it.

It is better to repair the land slowly, over time. Less chance of catastrophic washout, less work in one go. Small and frequent is better than monolithic, tall sructures. Replanting hillsides with trees that are too steep to safely do water catchments and means the deep living roots will retain soil and lessen chances of landslides.

Still not government policy by any flavour of politician or party. The Nats won't be interested because they are beholden to Corporate Ag. The Libs have been up in the clouds since Holt bought a flat in China, 'no swimming pool' was fervently stressed, covering transportation expenses. Labor wants to know why they are being asked boring questions and the Greens only do non-White policies. The farmers have to do it pretty much alone if they want to expand the capacity of their land, that's the upside.

When Glenn goes for single day usage of smaller paddocks (separated by temp elec fences) he should see another big leap in soil health. He's right in identifying the second bite as the biggest threat to plant recovery and 5 days may be leaving a bit too much temptation. Waiting for any government to realise that Regenerative soil management will be the biggest contributor to breaking the 'traditional' flood/drought cycle if adopted because absorbing the insolation and turning it into sugars and shading the soil thus preventing the heat vortices (Dr. W. Jehne) that deflect the rain that was going to go deeper into the interior. A win-win solution from every possible angle. On the way we'll rediscover CO₂ as a life-giving trace gas (.044%) and not a pollutant and put this AGW hysteria back in Pandora's box.

Really helpful, thank you. Helps explain the difficulties various species have. We have a small cattle farm in Victoria and I sadly found a sugar glider dead on the top barb next to our native shelterbelt. My family have wasted too much money on fencing, and have no more funds for replacement. It would only be the top line needed as a priority. It would be amazing if assistance could be given. I could do so much on our place if we had funds for fencing, which has gotten so expensive, and need to be a high quality to be worth doing. The only thing I would be concerned with is the string or plastics added to a top line. It would break down quickly in case of a pastic string, and can end up in the environment easily ...birds get caught easily. Also the fine polypipe with a slit would certainly be suckled or chewed off as entertainment by some cow. It is really tricky to find things that have long term function out in the field. Thank you again. It has been very helpful.
