Fresh Eggs Vs. Store Bought
Fresh eggs from backyard chickens often have lighter yellow yolks compared to the darker ones you might see in store-bought eggs. While people often think darker yolks mean better quality, that’s not always true. The color of an egg yolk depends on the hen’s diet, not its nutritional value.
We will explain it all in this video.

I never knew thanks
@@chickaboom45 I didn't either, until I investigated. Thank you for watching! 🥰
Hi there! We raise all of our own meats; poultry, beef and pork. We have on average about 100 chickens that are free ranged. The yoke color of our eggs are super orange and beautiful. The light yokes come from the grains fed whether home or commercial. We don't feed a lot of grains whatsoever, but instead feed fruits, veggies, and hays like alfalfa. chickens love an assorted diet. I know some wonderful people don't have the space to free range, so I like to share how much the hay makes a difference in eggs. I love to cook, we are what we eat, so I feed the animals out for their gut health, wellbeing and quality of taste. We have grown the tastiest meats; the key is in the protein! :) Its so good!
Wow, 100 chickens, that is wonderful!!! It sounds like you guys have a great routine and variety of fruits, veggies and hay. So glad it's working great for you. Thank you so much for commenting and sharing your flock with us, greatly appreciated!!
We never fully appreciate birds and all of the amazing things they do
That is so true! It is really amazing all they can do, I never knew until I started researching and tending to my own flock. Thank you for commenting and watching, always greatly appreciated! Merry Christmas!❤❤
I love how informative your channel is. 🌹Merry Christmas
Merry Chritmas to you too!! So glad you are enjoying the channel and enjoy the information we are presenting. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Enjoy your holidays!❤
I love the hanging treats for the flock! Awesome! Great info in this short! Very good!
Me too! It's fun to watch them peck away at the corn, in no time it's gone!! Thank you for watching Melissa!
@Mothercluckerschickenfarm You're welcome! ❤️
That’s why I feel mine are okay when we get cooler weather
@CluckinAround definitely Cindy! It's good to know that when we feel the cold they're just fine.🩷🩷
I enjoy your channel very much as you touch topics we are concerned about 🥰🙏👀
Thank you so much Walter! So happy you enjoy the content and that it is useful to you. Appreciate you watching and commenting!❤
I feed mine cabbage 🥬 noodles and pinto beans , I use Diatemacious earth and I treat their water with Apple cider vinegar
That sounds perfect! I also use the Diatemacious earth, and put the apple cider vinegar in their water about twice per week. You are doing all the right things I am sure your flock is healthy and thriving. Thank you for watching and commenting!🧡
Have you ever tried New Hampshires and if so, what do you think about them?
@MarkWYoung-ky4uc Hi Mark! No, I have never tried them, but would love to. Do you have any? Thank you for the question and thank you so much for watching. 🥰
@@Mothercluckerschickenfarm No I don't but have thought about getting some.
@@MarkWYoung-ky4uc I have heard they are good birds to add to a backyard flock. May give those a try. Thank you!
Can they learn from people too?
@cheels1655 that is a good question! I an going to investigate that, and do a video on that very thing. Great question, thank you. I believe they can, but don't know to what extent. Thank you for watching! I will do a video on that very question. 🩷🩷
They are surprisingly intelligent. They learn where a food source is and they remember it. Right now I’m having an issue with my hands eating my cat food. I guess they really like the higher protein.
Update: We did a video on the viewers question , can Chickens Learn From people too? It is a short on our channel dated 12-13-24. Enjoy!
@AFloodofSolaceJohnWhigham wow, knew they liked the high protein, but didn't know hens wood go for cat food. That is very interesting. How are you trying to remedy that? Thank you for sharing your experience. 🥰
Very good info!
@twinoaksfarmpoultry Thank you Melissa!! So appreciate you watching and all your wonderful support!🧡🧡
@@Mothercluckerschickenfarm You're very welcome! Have a great day! God bless y'all! We had snow yesterday, Debbie. It's 25°F here in SE OH this morning. But the sun is out strong & it feels so good!
@@twinoaksfarmpoultry Wow, snow!!!! That is cold!!! Bet you are glad you are taking a break from the meat birds, that would be hard to keep them warm. Glad you have sun! We just turned cold here, in the 40's, cold for us, but it feels good! Have a great Day Melissa, despite the cold!❤
@@Mothercluckerschickenfarm ❤️ You, too! Thanks, Debbie! All good...everyday is a blessing...I do love the warm days best but I'll take 'em however they come, that's for sure. Gotta acknowledge, though, that my dreams are made of palm trees & a Gulf Coast breeze. We have made it up to a whopping 30°, so we aren't really too much colder than what y'all have today, & the sun is strong enough that real feel is pretty bearable. We definitely feel a sense of relief & gratitude that we aren't concerned with getting meat birds through the cold...it is hard on them...we have found ways to compensate for cold & make them comfortable but it is a challenge! God bless y'all.
@@twinoaksfarmpoultry less stress for the christmas season for you guys, you can rest a bit and not have to worry about the cold so much. When do you start back up with another meat flock? Do you start in January? or wait till it's warmer like March or April?
You're always so informative. Thanks for posting your videos.
@amel2784 thank you so much! So glad you enjoy the content! Thank you for watching and commenting. Greatly appreciate your feedback.🥰
I have 4 chickens. Im a beginner. My first 3 were RIRs. Rehomed the rooster bc he was too aggressive, one hen passed from being eggbound, and the final girl in that group, passed after 2 years from a heart attack (she was around 8-10 years). And had laid an egg, just the day before. I miss that girl 😢. My group now, started with a Barnevelder pullet I rescued. She had been abandoned. She chased anyone who tried to catch her. Until I saw her. I caught her after 2 hours. Just bf sunset. She was pretty raggedy. So thin and scrawny at about 16 weeks, I thought she was a big crow 😂. Brought her home, and this girl was eating anything I gave her!! I still had all my supplies from my RIR kids. Last month, a former neighbor brought me 3 Jersey Giants. Ohmyword 😅😅. Three pullets and a cockerel. I separated them. The cockerel is a bit aggressive. I call him Roo Roo. Then the 2 Jersey girls live together. And this works out much better. They eat A LOT!!
Sorry to hear about your first group, I know that can sometimes happen with roosters, being aggressive. But you surely made up for it with the batch you have now. That is wonderful!! So glad you shared that, and so happy you didn't give up. I am sure the Barnevelder was lucky to have you rescue him. What a great story, Merry Christmas and thank you for watching and commenting!
Thanks for a superb video of great information & insight! They are amazing! Chickens have some really intriguing adaptations & abilities! This is a fabulous video...very interesting content. I am going to watch it several more times to help me think through & remember what you're teaching through it. This is super information. Toward the end of the video it really made me think about how we have intuitively observed with our meat chickens that we need to prioritize making them gently exercise frequently...you helped me connect info with intuition about how important exercise is for chickens...I need to watch a few more times to connect all the dots it made me think of but the info in here definitely reinforces the intuition we've experienced! Thanks for your time & effort making great content! It's very good.

We give our chickens a couple of sweet treats every year at Christmas and Easter because we know how much they love them and can really enjoy them. Of course they get fruits regularly as well. But they really love the sugar coated cranberry pieces and sugared nuts. 😊

All my chicken's 350+ taste buds must be working in overdrive!! 😆 They are the pickiest eaters of all my animals!

Traducir al español por favor!
@teresamartinez2630 I am sorry, I cannot translate the video to Spanish. Sorry.
My mom is a crazy chicken lady and will not eat any of her birds. They are spoiled rotten and get plenty of fresh scraps from the garden. I didn’t get it at first, but after spending hours in front of the coop watching with my mom over some wine, I think I get it. Other than the transactional relationship between protector and egg layer, it is neat to see their personalities shine. I’ve noticed with young chickens, they’re either the most meek of the flock, or they’re the ones eating eggs and plucking feathers. Like all animals, the young ones are the hardest to deal with
I understand your mom spoiling them! We tend to do that too with treats. It's really interesting how pullets have different personalities. We have some that love to be handled, some that shy away from that, and some that are even scared to go out into the run. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and loved the story you told. We appreciate you watching too!
Awesome!

We had some pekins but couldn't keep up with the amount of food and water changes they need. They lay well but eat too much to make it worth keeping them.
@Swansong343 I know what you mean. They are definitely eaters and we are constantly changing their water, since they can dirty it up within 5 minutes. Understand why you couldn't keep them. Thank you for watching and commenting too!🥰

“Calm” yet mine are still young and nipping the rest of my chickens and Muscovies 🧐
@KeepingUpWLeland We had a male duck that was constantly nipping our chickens, so we ended up rehoming 2 of the males. The next batch we got were females and they were a lot different, not nearly as aggressive. I think each duck is different, personality wise and aggressive wise. Sorry your Ducks are doing that. Thank you for watching and sharing your experience with Pekin Ducks. 😊

Beautiful chickens!!!!! I think need some clean water.❤❤❤
Yes, we have clean water all the time in their water feeders, the tubs you see in the yard we refill several times per day, but the ducks are messy, and they tend to dirty them within 5 minutes of filling. Mainly the tubs are for the ducks to muddy up, the other waterers you see on the concrete slab are always clean and filled. Thank you for watching!

Huh. Allowing for the differences in anatomy, chickens apparently communicate surprisingly similarly to cats and dogs.❤

Is that a rooster in the other nest?
Hi, No, they both are hens. The one standing is an easter egg hen, and the one behind it is a rhode island red mix. Thank you for watching!
@@Mothercluckerschickenfarm oh okay thanks
@@14elizabeth1 You're welcome🥰
Yes They can form friendships. I only have four hens, the maximum number you can have in the city where I live. The hen at the bottom of the pecking order decided that she was going to make friends with the hen at the top of the pecking order. She would scooch up next to her on the roosting bar at night, disregarding being pecked, and push herrself up underneath the other hen's wing. During the day, she would follow her around and when the dominant hen would turn to peck her, she would lower her head and would not respond but just stand perfectly still and sometimes look up at her very submissively. This seemed to satisfy the dominant hen and pretty soon she allowed her to follow her everywhere. The problem is the two formed a clique against the other two. 🙁
Wow, that is such an interesting story, isn't it amazing what they can actually do, that is awesome! Hopefully the 2 don't gang up on the other 2. lol Thank you so much for sharing that. Love hearing that. Just proves how smart hens really can be, and loving like people, too. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.❤
