Never played it when I was a kid, though I only heard great things. Kept hearing about it and watched some videos about it on youtube and finally last year I figured out how to play it on an emulator. Played it mostly blind and I loved it. Immediately played it again with a guide to get stuff I knew I had missed, loved it even more. Immediately played it a third time to get all the endings and couldn't love it more. Bummed I missed out for so long but it really shows how good a game it is to hold up so well 30 years later and still give an adult that childish wonder, whimsy and enjoyment, though I've always loved time travel so I'm sure I'm a bit biased in that aspect. 10/10 game imo

I can only think of few games that I considere perfect or near perfect, Chrono Trigger (even with how cryptic some puzzle or solutions can be). Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (even with the gatcha mechanics in blades, it gives you a different experience every time). And Bloodbourne (even with the Chalis dungeon, that can be repetitive but it's extra content for an action game).

What you said about the game being better when it ISN'T trying to tie itself to Chrono Trigger is exactly how I feel about Chrono Cross - it is a decent game when it isn't trying to tie itself to Chrono Trigger, but the more it does try, the more it angers me! I mean, "deleting Prometheus!?" Really!? Did you really have to go there!?

not only will it be, its already happened multiple times. Don't get me wrong, I love Chrono Trigger, but there are better JRPGs out there. Trials of Mana (the newer version, not the original) being one of them. As far as the franchise itself - Chrono Cross would have been a much better game if they didn't try to force it in as a sequel to CT, and instead made a completely new thing with it... and Chrono Cross is WHY we never got a 3rd game. I really do hope they reboot this series like they did with Secret of Mana (and FF7R... but closer to the original game, and not rehauled into an action RPG with a different, but similar story), and this time give us a real sequel. Though, Chrono Trigger does good on it's own too, as the only thing they don't resolve is splitting a time line by stopping Chrono's death before it happens... which they wouldn't have done if he hadn't. They really have a blank check with how they could approach it, doing something similar to Zelda - say have Chrono Cross be the sequel of the timeline where you save Chrono, and another game where it's a sequel if you don't.

One thing I never understood about when people talk about Chrono Trigger is why they pronounce Mar-Le as Mar-El. Aside from that great job and I still love this game, would love to see a PS4 release with all the DS content included. Still have my PS1 copy, too bad the loading times are terrible. I heard that in Japan FF4 had the terrible Loading times and Chrono Trigger loaded fast.

I feel like I got my PlayStation so late because I got it in early 1997. Oddly I got a Saturn first in mid 95, then an N64 when it was first released in 96, but for some reason got a PlayStation last even though it was my favorite of the 3 by far. Because of getting it last, I always forget that they had the big Saturn style jewel cases (and Sega CD). I never owned any of the games that were in that style box, I honestly am curious how many titles were made while they still used them. On a side note what’s with the tone while describing that companies aren’t friends in a capitalist society? Of course companies aren’t friends that are in the same industry, the point isn’t to make friends in business unless it’s mutually beneficial. Capitalism is the best system possible, and we are already having too much government interference in business as it is. The government should not have as much involvement with private companies as they do right now, between regulations and using them as tools to control people’s freedoms. So I hope after this coming week new regulations start being put in place restricting government involvement and reducing the ability of the government to access information obtained by companies on their consumers. The biggest thing that needs to be done is legislation preventing the government from telling companies what they can and can’t say. In general return to stricter adherence to the constitution and bill of rights is needed. Only an idiot would be opposed to this, if you have a problem with the constitution or bill of rights go to one of these countries that will arrest you for the things you say like Canada, England or Australia. That wasn’t directed towards you man, it’s towards anyone in this country that is ungrateful for what we have.

PS1 introduced me (already a huge CRPG nerd by way of games like the Bard's Tale and Eye of the Beholder series) to JRPGs... wasted a lot of money renting Vandal Hearts, Suikoden and Breath of Fire 3 multiple times to eventually beat them. FF7 didn't interest me, I always preferred the 2D sprite art of the above games and I think that style has aged much better than the early 3D FF games (FFX on PS2 on the other hand still looks amazing!).

4:35 Number one, Nintendo had NOTHING to do with the development of the CD-i. Number two, the CD-i was NOT designed to be nor introduced as a game console; it was introduced as a new video player format with interactivity that competed with LaserDisc. When it failed to supplant VHS and LaserDisc, Philips pivoted HARD and positioned it as a (very terrible) game console. Several years later, the DVD video player would succeed where the CD-i failed.

I absolutely adore the original PlayStation! It's always been kind of a shame that Arc the Lad didn't get an international release for seven years (which was an absurd amount of time back then) but still, one thing that's a classic PlayStation staple to me, especially for the first two, is having something for everyone, and it's pretty amazing that the console was already embodying that from day one! Oh yeah, the controller symbols actually do have a meaning! Square is a map or menu, Triangle is for viewpoint, Circle is yes and X is no. Considering that Sega and Microsoft both just used the alphabet thing that Nintendo did, this is a cool little innovation

Here in Europe the N64 came out in 1997, why Tomb Raider had a massive impact here and not so much in the US. I always think though what would have happened in the DC released in 1998 like in Japan and not 1999. Only one year between it and the N64 and with the PS2 not being hyped up yet I think the DC could have beaten the N64.

As soon as Mario 64 came out everyone here kept saying the same thing "Tomb Raider controls like ass" and all the reviews kept saying the same thing about Tomb Raider's dated controls from then on out... Most of the reason Tomb Raider 3 got hated on so much, especially after Banjo.
