Antigua Guatemala | 5-day travel guide, backpacking Central America's most beautiful city
Welcome to our favourite city in Central America - Antigua, Guatemala!
Antigua is a stunning colonial city in the highlands of Guatemala. With some of the most beautiful architecture we have seen, and surrounded by impressive volcanos, this stop quickly became one of our favourite experiences while backpacking through Central America!
We landed in Guatemala following a month of amazing travel in Panama and Costa Rica. With approximately a month planned in this beautiful country as well, our first stop was Antigua.
With 6 nights and 5 full days here, we took our time exploring the colourful streets and enjoying our time in the city. Watch the video to see exactly how we spent our time in Antigua! From walking tours, to notable food stops and lively markets - there are plenty of things to do and see in this impressive city!
In this video, we briefly shared our experience doing the overnight Acatenango Volcano hike. If you would like to see what this experience was like in-depth, check the full video out here: ua-cam.com/video/V1pz0MZ283g/v-deo.html
While in Antigua we stayed in this beautiful hostel and would highly recommend it: hostelworld.tp.st/rEtOWi5w

      Considering the environment you are hiking in and the effort required to get everything up the mountain, it was good! The lunch on day 1 was great, dinner was spaghetti which was simple but did the job and breakfast was good. It was nothing I'd rave about but we were satisfied :)

    How much time do you think we would need to allocate If we are doing the Larch valley hike? We are very athletic and experienced hikers. We would also like to do the rock pile hike and just walk around the lake.

    • @caitlinlaurent
      @caitlinlaurent 9 днів тому

      Hi! If you are experienced hikers I would recommend doing the Sentinel Pass trail, it takes you through Larch Valley and further up a pass to a beautiful ridge! It is 11.1km with 749m of elevation gain so I would estimate the time you need based on your usual hiking pace. The rockpile is only a 5-10 minute walk from the parking lot and the lake shore will be less than an hour. Allow plenty of time for photos, considering it's such a beautiful location. I can't give you an exact amount of time you need as that is completely up to you and dependant on your hiking pace, but overestimate, worst case you get to spend a little more time in this beautiful spot! Good luck :)

      Hi, it will depend on what type of ticket you booked! They have bundle options, or just direct to Moraine Lake. I would recommend reaching out to the Moraine Lake Bus Company to check in with them directly :) You can also drive yourself to Lake Louise if you need, just be prepared for traffic :)

    As a french watching people from other countries talking about this visa makes me realize how much chance we have. We have deals with Air Canada for cheap flights , we have deals with some banks and assurances. Also the employment service of France will give you a 3 months training to prepare yourself for going to Canada. No need to pay extra money ir something like that. And they have job offers ( that obviously won't suit everyone ) to help us teying securing a job before arriving. Les français soyons fiers de la chance qu'on a . Ailleurs ca a l'air chaud ils sont abandonnés personne les aide...

    Hi Caitlin, I'm traveling from Costa Rica to Banff in early October this year, and this is a very informative video. Thank you! My plan is to drive to Banff, and I have a question: If I buy shuttle/bus tickets to Moraine Lake in advance, will I have a reserved parking spot? One additional question, Do you think it's worth visiting Jasper as well? I was considering the Columbia Icefield experience. Thank you!

    • @caitlinlaurent
      @caitlinlaurent Місяць тому

      Shuttle tickets do not come with any reserved parking. If you go with the first option they will pick you up in Banff so you can leave your car at your hotel. The second option leaves from lake Louise summer gondola which should have plenty of parking, just not guaranteed! Also, yes Jasper is amazing! However there are currently wildfires in the area which have affected Jasper so I would wait until closer to make any decisions about Jasper.

    Does the helicopter noise interfere with the backcountry experience ? How do you know which flight to take ? Are there reservations? Where does the heli land on the return from Mount Assiniboine - did you need to shuttle to the parking lot 😊?

    • @caitlinlaurent
      @caitlinlaurent Місяць тому

      Hi, great questions! From memory, the helicopters only fly every second day which helps with the noise but it definitely does make it feel less remote when you can hear them coming and going. We hiked into the park and then flew out. When you are flying out there is no choice of time. Everyone who was departing that day meets at the same time (10am from memory) and you just wait for a flight out. There's no time slot booking per say. If you want to fly in I would suggest getting there as early as possible to make the most of your time in the park! Reservations do need to be made pretty far in advance to fly in, camp or stay at the lodge! The heli landed a 10m walk away from the trailhead parking lot so we just walked back to our car. I don't think a shuttle was necessary or available. I hope that answers all your questions!

      We just did a lot of research and spoke to people when we got to Antigua and decided to go with Lava Trails, there's plenty of good options around but we loved the cabins at the top which is why we chose them :)

    Iv done Ha ling A couple of times. Its pretty nice. First and second lookout is pretty simple. The last leg if the trip is just all stairs stairs stairs. Once at the top its a great view. Only think is, it can get really cold and windy at the top. Great training mountain

      Is it very steep? Like do you need any climbing gear? Or can you hike it without any?
