    My giant pumpkin grows so slow and hasn't had it's first vine yet. It's average 18°C here, I put mychorizzae in the roots and water it every couple days. Do you have any tips on faster growth? What fertilizer should I use? Or any other tips? I heard 20-20-20 fertilizer is good

    • @pumpkinista
      @pumpkinista 10 днів тому

      The most likely problem is that your soil is too cold and hasn't yet warmed up. I install soil heating cables in the ground before I transplant my seedlings, and I accidentally cut one of them with a rototiller right around transplant time. That seedling shut down the minute I planted it, and the other one took off. The smaller one is just starting to get going now, thanks to warmer days and a greenhouse, plus heating it at night. It's probably less of a fertilizer thing than it is a cold thing. In fact, I'm barely doing any fertilizer right now, just a little bit of fish/seaweed and humic/fulvic acid. I would give it a few more weeks and see if it perks up as the temperatures rise. When compared to prior years, my seedlings were not very big compared to how they are this year, so your season is far from over!

    • @pumpkinista
      @pumpkinista 10 днів тому

      I would avoid watering it too much. I usually only water once a week, maybe twice a week this time of year. You don't want your roots to get too wet/cold and rot. If anything, less water may be a little better because it will encourage the roots to dig down (translation - get bigger) to find more water. Once the pumpkin fruit gets started, that's a different story. Then you want to pound the water to it!

    Have you had any luck using biodegradable starter pots for squash and pumpkins?

    • @pumpkinista
      @pumpkinista 12 днів тому

      I've used peat pots and "cow pots" before, but I'm not really a fan. I feel like they dry out quickly, and I'm not convinced the roots will be able to penetrate / break through and the pot to break down quick enough for it to be able to spread out like it needs to. I remember seeings someone's video where they pulled up a giant pumpkin plant that was only a few weeks old, and the roots had already spread out over 3 feet! I feel like the roots would still be trying to break through a peat pot in that time frame, but I've never actually looked into it that detailed.

    is it possible to grow it without fertilizer and can I only keep the main vine I'm kinda limited on spaxe

    • @pumpkinista
      @pumpkinista 15 днів тому

      It is possible to grow it without fertilizer; just don't expect to break any records. But you could still get several hundred pounds, and even over a thousand if your soil is in good shape. Your limited space will be more of an issue than anything. If you grow a giant pumpkin with just a main vine, It will be bigger than a regular pumpkin grown in the same amount of space, but you will be severely limiting its potential. Growers have grown pumpkins over a thousand pounds in as little as 150 ft², so you can theoretically grow big pumpkins in small spaces even if it's smaller than that. If that's all you have for options, I say give it a go and see what happens!

    How often do you water ?

    • @pumpkinista
      @pumpkinista 16 днів тому

      When it's a seedling, I don't water much at all. I like to encourage the roots to dig deeper. As long as the soil is a little moist when I dig down, I don't water. Maybe once a week in the beginning. Once it is a full size plant with a pumpkin growing, I water heavily 1-2 times a day to keep the soil moist, but not completely saturated to the point where there are puddles on top. I don't measure how much water I use, but a lot of growers use over 100 gallons per plant per day. Most plants are 900 ft² or greater (30ft x 30ft).

    • @pumpkinista

      I think my burning is from the light because I've used all different types of potting soil (some of which have no nutrients at all), and they still burn. They are burning a lot less with the light a little higher. I've heard some people say that low humidity can play a factor as well, which is very possible in my house. I do not use DaVinci Resolve.
