Off Grid - From the Ashes
United States
Приєднався 5 гру 2020
We lost our property in Northern Colorado when the Cameron Peak Fire came through and devastated our region. Now we are starting over. Watch us as we rebuild the beauty we lost to the wildfires at our off grid location. From developing a spring to reforesting our land and building a mortise and tenon and dovetail log cabin. We will take you along for the ride.
Electrolysis to Remove Rust - Restoring Stone Chisels
Using electrolysis and vinegar to restore my stone chisels to their former glory after they burnt up in the forest fire and then sat in the snow for a winter.

Electroplating Chisels to Remove Rust
Переглядів 3763 місяці тому
I lost my timber framing chisels in the Cameron Peak Wildfire. After recovering the rusted blades that remained several months later, I wasn't sure anything could be done to restore them. I brought them to my dad and he showed me a new way to remove the many layers of rust and restore them to their former condition.
Shifting the Cabin Foundation

Somehow the cabin shifted on its foundation posts. We need to fix this before the entire cabin collapses. This time we tied the bottom cabin support beams into the foundation posts so it can't shift in the future...hopefully.
7" Planer Comparison -Triton TPL180 vs. Makita 1086B
Переглядів 1,1 тис.4 місяці тому
My 7" planer broke and I was faced with the choice of buying a new one or upgrading to a different model. I ended up finding a used Makita 1086B 7" planer for the same price as a new Triton TPL180 7" planer. I tested both and ran a comparison on quality, price, as well as a live speed comparison to see how each of them measured up.
Small Cabin Build - Shou Sugi Ban Beams
Переглядів 2,4 тис.4 місяці тому
We are reaching the second floor of our little cabin and have started to finish the beams to support the loft and the roof. We are using a shou sugi ban method to finish the beams and coating them with linseed oil to help protect them.
Small Cabin Build - Raising the walls

Getting the walls up on the tiny cabin. I am always overambitious, and everything takes longer than I think it should, but we are making good progress. The window frames are in and things are getting closer to complete.

I transported the second half of my cabin up to our property and began assembling. Weather always gets in the way, but it is good to see the progress.
Small Cabin Build - Moving the Cabin - Part 1

We are finally moving the cabin from the backyard up to the property. We painted the bottom course of logs with linseed oil for an extra layer of protection and installed cotton batting as a thin layer of insulation between each course of logs. The items we used are listed below. Linseed Oil - atlaspreservation.com/products/pure-swedish-raw-linseed-oil Cotton Batting - www.amazon.com/Bosal-Kata...
Small Cabin Build - Post and Beams for Cabin Deck

Installing the posts and beams for the small cabin took the better part of a month and help from family to get the big timbers in place. Working only on the weekends really makes the project drag.
Free Trees - Planting Ponderosa Pine Plugs

We got connected with the Coalition for the Poudre River Watershed who donated 300 ponderosa pine saplings to help reforest our property that burned in the Cameron Peak Wildfire. They are a wonderful organization that has been very helpful in the recovery and restoration process after these wildfires devasted our national forests and mountain properties. www.poudrewatershed.org/

Building a simple window frame for the cabin turned into a little bit of an ordeal. Some days things just don't go as planned.

Washing Soda works better. Sodium Carbonate instead of Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda). How to make sodium carbonate. Preheat the oven to 250°. Evenly spread 1 cup baking soda on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 1 hour. Also file the chisel to expose bare steel, it will work better for wrapping the wire. You don't need the battery. Any power brick from 5 to 20 volts at 2 amps will work. Use a piece of rebar for the sacrificial anode. Iron and Steel are most commonly used for the electrolysis of rust A graphite rod is best. They are used as anodes, but they are sacrificed during electrolysis, as the anodes rust (get oxidized) and the cathodes de-rust (get reduced). Graphite is a particular structure of carbon, and is what's used for electrolytic de-rusting. One major advantage of using carbon (graphite) material for the sacrificial anode is that no dissociated iron is deposited on the part being de-rusted.
Thanks for sharing. I will try this on my next attempt.
from: Anch. AK....where(location - city, state ??)) is 'build' taking place ....??
This is in Northern Colorado, Larimer County
Hi Great job on the Cabin keep it up..
Great work!
You showed up in recommended today. Will get caught up. Interesting information and commentary on re-greening your property.
Is this just for high days and holidays as dos'nt look that big to live in!!
This is just a small cabin for us to stay in while we are there for an evening or two. I do have plans for a larger cabin in the future, but that is still some time off.
Scott, two words...safety glasses!😉
I know, it's such a "mom" thing to say. Also, the cabin is coming along great!
I do wear them sometimes… I just don’t have any video evidence.
Hi great to see you back at the Cabin
What year is your toolcat?
It is a 2005
Great to see another video from you all again!
That man can travel !
Are you still interested in some BIG logs (some as big as 24” dia, 16-20’ long) to mill? I can drag them up the hill with our skid steer and leave beside your mill-but I don’t want to block your vehicles, if that’s bigger than you can handle!
Feel free to drag them up if you would like. I would be happy to mill them up. As long as I can still get to my Toolcat and get a vehicle in front of my Toolcat in case I need to jump it, all will be good.
Also be careful out there. We caught a cougar on our game cameras last night.
@@offgrid-fromtheashes6681 Kim reminds me that it’ll be at least spring before we’ll be able to get them up to you-I forget how our skid steering interacts with ice and mud. LOL
Looks like my slope 😆
Do you know where the bsckup alarm is located?
I miss seeing your videos! Any plans in the near future to post a new video?
Brother you need Tesla’s internet and you need to install a battery disconnect with a fresh battery. 🤟🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Hi You are doing a great Job keep it up...
Too much talking
Buddy you have the patience of a Preacher, bless you and your family! Butch Ashland Ohio
First thumbs up, and first comment!
So happy to see you and your family back at it!
Thanks, we will try to be better about posting more often
You guys Rock! Butch Ashland Ohio
hi there thinking of getting one good show john
There's a saying it's not if but when you'll cut into a log stop.
Wow you need to learn how to use a circular saw properly
Decent hammer drill might help fellas.
Agreed! Just one of the many tools I don't own, yet.
You can rent some tools when necessary
I have an OS 31, your comment about the leftover parts was dead on with mine as well. Some parts I didn't have enough of, but some I had WAY too many of.
I e been considering buying land in Colorado but I’ve heard so many negative things.
I'm sure it would have went better if you had more experience with tools . Like husband and wife working together . My wife is a pain to work with .lol
Just found your channel. Looks like a fun project! Was wondering if the dead trees are from bettle kill? What state are you in?
We lost all the trees in the Cameron Peak forest fire here in Colorado a year and a half ago now.
i am new in your followers Community. What a nice target for your family building a home together with sow local or regional tree seeds for your re-born forest.🤔 Good luck to all of you and above all protect all yours when you return to """city""". Bon Courage MONSIEUR to all of yours from Geneva Lake of Fance . 👍👍👍👍
Thank you for following!
The fact your sitting in the snow and cold filming. You earn a comment bud
Holding the square backwards! Man I was nervous when you was cutting that I'm sure the kickback made you nervous
the saw use blew my entire mind!
I enjoyed the video. Good job! Dave
Glad you enjoyed it
Is that rust I see on the carriage at 14:10?
No, that is just dirt. None of the new pieces they sent had any rust.
A good tool for the job for sure. A pedestal thicknesser would also be a good addition if you had room for one. Sometimes you can get them as a 2 in 1 planer/thicknesser. I've subbed and enjoy your vids bud 👍
While I agree, and would love to have a large planer/thicknesser for my shop, many of the beams I will need to plane for the cabin I am building in the future will be far too large for that. So, I went for this first. One day I will get there, but for now, I think my wife might disown me if I put one more large tool in the garage that is already bursting at the seems... I guess I have a shop build up at the property in my future as well.
@@offgrid-fromtheashes6681 you seem very much like myself 😄 I keep coming home with tools but they always seem to get bigger 😉 I'll keep a keen eye for more videos and your shop build.
If you'll have to handle your logs a lot, getting a timberjack could be a great aid! Gives good leverage and keeps fingers and feet safer.
I do plan on getting a cant hook or a peavey, but haven't gotten there yet. It would definitely help with the leverage.
Hi From Australia Great job keep it up & Merry Christmas to you & your Family
Thank you! You too!
I haven't played with an erector set with that many parts since I was a child. Wonder if they assembled it before shipping to find any problems.
The answer is no. There were a few things each time that didn't line up quite right, but nothing that we couldn't find a solution to.
One recommendation I would give is to take a smaller "bite" with the router bit, then take another pass a bit deeper, repeat, etc. That will allow you more control and you should be able to get cleaner pockets. A bit too late, but if you find you need to cut more notches, you may have an easier time of it. Thank you for posting these videos, great work overcoming significant challenges, you're an inspiration!
Thanks Lucas! We discovered the same thing. We ended up doing just that on the second half of the pockets we cut. We will have more pockets to cut in the future as well.
great job nice video too one day i hope to become as good as you
Thanks!
I bought extra bolts just in case they shorted me but there were PLENTY from the factory. I bought the OS23 thinking “Shoot! 23” logs? I’m never going to get any that big!” The third log barely made it through the guides. So if I ever buy another saw it will be the bigger model.
I originally thought that OS23 would be big enough, but I measured some of the trees on my property first. I now find that I have to trim some of my logs to fit through the OS27. Bigger is almost always better.
Thanks bro. My sawmill should be here right before Christmas.
Best of luck. Have fun with it. Feel free to reach out if you run into any issues.
Yes a good mix of hardwoods will bring in and sustain a much more diverse wildlife population. Many places in Canada the logging companies are changing the forest eco systems as they replant with only coniferous trees. Thanks for the video....
I appreciate the comments. We will see what takes in the long term. It will be a fun experiment.
Very nice project! Waiting to see how the cabin progresses! I subscribe for more :)
Awesome, thank you!
I always tell people during planning phase to always go big on their decks, its a living space and storage area, but I know you are limited to what you can do with this build. Its still a beautiful area and will bounce back in no time....Thanks for the video.
Agreed. The larger deck will be in the second phase. I will get a video out that shows the full design. I am just working on how to show it in 3D as I have the plans built in AutoCAD in 2D at the moment.
Yep, that will do it. I would be worried squirrels will eat 'em though. We planted about 600 wallnuts last fall (~8 in deep), this year maybe 150 came up (the remainder dug up by squirrels). Plan now is to freeze over the winter and plant again in spring. Using little flags to help avoid chopping with weedwackers and mowers.
There aren't many squirrels around right now. Most of them died in the forest fire. However, I expect that the deer and elk will like them as much as the squirrels. Either way, I am fine if not much grows in the spring if it also brings in more wildlife.
Strongly suggest leather gloves, safety footwear, safety eyeglasses and hearing protection. You seem to be a long way from medical help. Thanks for posting though.
You are not wrong, and yes I should be better about correct safety gear. I have it all with me, but I find I am not using it as often as I should.
